OMG! Rejected Skittles Being Fed To Cows! What The H…..?!

 

Well, even with all the dangerous, scary and bizarre things going on with our food system these days, this post has a title I never thought I’d be writing! What’s even scarier is you know there’s much more of the kind of thing this post mentions going on than anyone is aware of or admitting. If it hadn’t been for the rain causing the Skittles to spill we would all probably still be in the dark about this. Please read and share……this is alarming on so many levels!

 

CBS: Millions Of Skittles Not Fit For Human Consumption Secretly Given as Cattle Feed

If you needed MORE proof that factory farms are raising “food” you shouldn’t feed your family: 

Last week there was an odd spill on a rural highway in Wisconsin: red Skittles. However, even odder than the spill was the fact that some Mars Inc. factories sell their discarded candy as cattle feed.

The sheriff posted the picture of the spill to his Facebook account explaining that thousands of Skittles had been found spilled on a rural highway. He later updated his post (see above) when he found out where the candy was headed and how it had spilled,  “Due to it raining at the time, the box got wet and gave way allowing the Skittles to spill out on the roadway. It is reported that the Skittles were intended to be feed for cattle as they did not make the cut for packaging at the company. In the end these Skittles are actually for the Birds!”

Mars Inc. apparently has procedures for discarding “food” that isn’t fit for human consumption and claims that while some factories do sell unused product for animal feed, the factory in question normally doesn’t. In the case of these candies, the article reports:

“Company spokeswoman Denise Young said the Skittles were supposed to be destroyed because a power outage prevented the signature “S’’ from being placed on the candies. She said Mars planned to contact the sheriff’s office and the farmer to find out more.”

But don’t worry, a cattle nutritionist explained that food byproducts get used for cattle feed depending on what’s available in a given region and at a particular time during the year. In this case, the cattle wouldn’t have eaten JUST the Skittles, they would have been mixed with other ingredients to assure a certain nutritional profile. However, let’s be clear if Skittles is part of a “nutritional profile,” it’s not food I want to eat. Why? Because it’s not healthy- not for me and certainly not for a cow. Unless you ask an animal nutrition expert.

According to John Waller, a professor of animal nutrition at the University of Tennessee, a candy-based diet for cattle is fine. In fact, it takes care of two issues at one time; it keeps fat material from going into the landfills and it’s a nutrient source for cattle.

This “science” boggles the mind. Really.

Everyone should be aware of this. Please forward this. Cows shouldn’t EVER be eating Skittles. EVER.

The Power Of The Mind, Plus How Subliminals Can Put It To Work For You

 

I’ve already done a couple of posts that touch on the placebo effect and the part the mind plays in creating health or dis-ease, but the studies sited in this article made me even more aware of how powerful the mind is when it comes to our health. Just think about getting the benefits of exercising without exercising, learning a new sport “by mind,” or people acting and feeling years younger when put in a special environment. The mind really IS a terrible thing to waste.

Do your thoughts affect your physical body? As humans we have that ability to recall past events along with ALL the emotions that we recall experiencing during that stressful event. A blow out with co-worker, a flat tire, a financial disaster, a dispute with your spouse, etc… When we recall those in our mind or we imagine future events that might occur based on our past experiences, we stimulate that stress response over and over again.

Stress increases cortisol, increases glucose in the blood stream, increases inflammation and paralyzes your immune system.

So if your thoughts can make you sick, can your thoughts actually make you well? Scientists have proven that they can. Here are a few examples:

People who imagined going to the gym for 30 minutes per day and imagined working specific muscle groups had a physical increase in muscle strength and muscle size, without putting a foot in the gym.

*Imagining playing piano and practicing certain keys and chords had just as much of an impact as someone who physically practiced the chords.

*Personal Note: I have a friend who taught herself to ski by this same method

FYI: EMF Update On New Cell Phones

 

I am what I would call a “low tech” person…..I don’t use a cell phone, tablet, iPad or anything other than a good ole laptop or PC. Plus, I recently took a week off from technology in general, which is almost impossible these days. I did use the computer, but as minimally as possible.

Anyway, I know I’m the exception, not the norm, and that there are a lot of people out there that want whatever the latest “new, best, fastest thing” is, so I think it’s good for everyone to be aware that those “plus” items almost always come with their own set of “minuses,” but you’ll never hear the companies that sell the products mention those. This article from Dr. Desaulniers, who is a breast cancer survivor, does a good job of listing some of the things all you techies should at least be aware of about the new technologies……

EMF Update: New Cellphone Threats in 2017

One of the big selling points for new cell phones on the market today are upgrades to technology which allow devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 to “fast charge” using “Qi” technology, portable wireless charging pads designed for small devices such as cellphones. Wireless charging stations can charge phones in about half the time as “plug in” devices and save on wear and tear to internal plug-in ports.

But do these conveniences come at a price to your health?

Is Wireless Charging Safe?

“Qi” uses electromagnetic fields to transfer power between the cellphone and the pad. This process, also called “induction,” was invented by Nicola Tesla over 100 years ago.

Industry organizations, such as the  “Wireless Power Consortium,” have declared “Qi” wireless charging technology to be safe because it uses “tight coil wiring,” which supposedly produces less EMF emissions.

Other experts beg to differ. In 2011, the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) declared cell phones and WiFi in general to be “Group 2B Possible Carcinogens,” possible cancer-causing agents.

In 2016, the US Department of Health and Human Services National Toxicology Program announced findings of a study that directly linked cellphone use to cancer. Other studies have made the connection time and again between close-range cellphone use, brain cancer and breast cancer.

Wireless Tabletops

Qi wireless “pad” technology is just the beginning of a new wave of surface-area charging options for 2017. Other devices use rezence technology, which utilizes magnetic resonance. Rezence is found in desktops, tabletops and even entire kitchen counter tops: you simply put your computer or other compatible device on the surface and, voila, instant charge. Wireless tabletops are beginning to appear in US Starbuck’s, in McDonald’s in Britain and in some new car models.

The real danger of rezence technology lies in its ability to provide wireless at long distances; much of this technology can connect devices from over 20 feet away. Once these chargers find a connection, they send out radio-frequency signals. The amount of “free-flowing power” produced by tabletop charging is a lot more than regular WiFi, according to some industry insiders.

“I don’t think I would want to be in a room with free moving power signals,” said one wireless tech executive in a recent interview.

Integrated Bluetooth technologies in desktop chargers as well as in other new devices such as wireless headphones (the new iPhones no longer have headphone jacks), iWatches and Fitbits add another dimension to the EMF risk, especially for the millions of individuals who wear these devices all day long.

On the horizon: 5G

In July, 2016, the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the construction of a nation-wide “5G” cellphone network. 5G utilizes “millimeter waves” which operate at a much higher frequency than 2, 3, or 4G. Millimeter waves also can’t penetrate building walls as readily, leading to the speculation that one 5G “antennae base” may eventually be needed for every 12 homes.

Some in the EMF Safety community, such as Dr. Joel Moskowitz of the UC-Berkeley School of Public Health, express concerns that not only will millimeter waves have a more harmful effect on human tissue, they may also effect bacteria and protozoa, putting the very building blocks of our natural world at risk. The full conversion of existing cell towers to be “5G compatible” is still a few years away; it is not too late to express your opposition to this harmful technology upgrade, which many individuals and organizations around the country are choosing to do.

Get Protected 

Reducing your exposure to EMFs through turning off devices at night and keeping sensitive body parts such as the breasts and brain away from cellphones and other WiFi devices is the easiest thing you can do to protect yourself and your family from the onslaught of new EMF threats. Sometimes exposure to EMF is unavoidable though. In this case, consider utilizing EMF protection technology. I’ve known for a long time that you can tell a lot about your state of health from looking at your tongue. I just never knew what exactly to look for and what it meant, other than ridges on the side of the tongue. Tongue diagnosis is an ancient Indian diagnosis technique which many health issues can be diagnosed. When the tongue is examined a number of things are taken into consideration. The color of the tongue body, its size and shape, the color and thickness of coating is indicated to location of abnormalities and moistures or dryness of the tongue. These signs reveal the overall health to specific organ function, especially in the digestive system.

Have you ever wondered why your visit to your doctor or health professional usually starts off with ‘Say ahhh’?  You’ll be totally amazed at what your Tongue reveals about your health. The tongue is an important indicator of health and being aware of which body part each area of your tongue is linked to and what the different colors, shapes, bumps and textures of your tongue indicate gives you a brilliant early warning system that should not be ignored. The back of the tongue reflects your bladder and kidneys, the tip is linked to heart health, the tongue center is the spleen and the sides are the liver.

If your tongue is red with cracks on the surface, this usually indicates a fungal infection in the body, and it’s often accompanied by night sweats, problems sleeping and irritability. A pale tongue surface can suggest anemia or a hormonal imbalance in women. Antibiotics can often have an adverse side effect on your tongue too. • A pale tongue indicates the excess cold • An overly red tongue indicates the excess heat • Pale purple indicates stagnation related to cold • Reddish purple indicates stagnation related to heat • Bright red color may indicate the lack of iron or vitamin B12 • Red tip of tongue may indicate heat in heart  • Pale tongue body indicates blood deficiency

Use These Acupressure Points To Alleviate Holiday Stress And More!

 

This time of year can be exciting and fun, but also stress-inducing. I, myself, am in the middle of recuperating from a bout with something that I’m sure was triggered in part by trying to do too much and not listening to my body when it needed rest. Here are some simple acupressure points from Michael Reed Gach of acupressure.com for relieving stress, tension and  headaches/migraines, as well as for balancing the thyroid. I actually followed the exercises as he was going over them in the video and was amazed at how tight and painful certain points were, and how helpful it was to spend a little time working on them. Acupressure to relieve shoulder tension, stiff neck, headaches, and more

 

I have used acupressure for over 40 years and helped thousands relieve muscular tension and stress related disorders. Acupressure points are especially effective for managing stress and dealing with common health problems that get worse under stress.

Acupressure Points for shoulder and neck problems

GB 21 is on the top of the shoulders, two finger widths out from the outside base of your neck.

This stress relief acupressure point is where you have the most tension in your trapezius muscles. I find it easiest to use my opposite hand to press this point. First feel for the tension on the top of your shoulders by firmly rubbing to feel for the tightest spot. Then curve your fingers to hook the weight of your arm into this stress relief point.

Special Neck Pain Points: B 10, Gv 16, GB 20

B 10 is on the back of your neck, just one thumb width down from you skull, and one thumb width out from the center of your spine on your upper neck. This acupressure point is good for hormonal balance, since it benefits the thyroid gland. Use firm, prolonged pressure on B 10. Stress Relief provides step-by-step guidance.

GB 20 is located in the hollows underneath the base of your skull, about 3 to 4 inches apart, depending on the size of your body. This great acupressure point further releases shoulder pain, neck stiffness, and tension headaches.

These acupressure points should be held for 2 to 3 minutes with firm finger pressure several times throughout the day and night. This can release your chronic and acute tensions in the shoulder and neck region of your body..

Let’s Make This A “Less Trashy” Holiday Season :-)

 

Fortunately the county where I live made recycling much easier a number of years ago when Waste Management changed its guidelines to where we didn’t have to sort out recyclables into different bins, plus expanded the list of what we could put in…..anything from “1s” to “7s,” which really made a big difference. Plus, we have GreenWorks here, a wonderful agency that has brought a number of services and businesses together that host quarterly drop-offs for hard to recycle things that can’t be put in the regular bins. 

Anyway, this  is a good article from The Alternative Daily to  feature right now, especially since we are heading into a time of year when holiday gift-giving and social gatherings are likely to be generating extra amounts of trash. I learned several things that I wasn’t already aware of,  like shredded paper not being good (I always thought the opposite was true!), so please read and share, and let’s all make sure our stockings are stuffed, but not our landfills. 🙂 Here’s to a “less trashy,” more environmentally-friendly holiday season!

Never Recycle These 11 Things

While recycling programs vary in different areas, most curbside programs follow a similar system; the recycling is picked up and taken to a sorting facility where materials are separated, then those materials are sold to various companies that make products out of recycled materials.

When people place non-recyclable items into their recycling bins, it keeps this system from being as efficient as it can be. Non-recyclable items can contaminate other recyclables, slow down the process and even damage machines. In order to keep the system running efficiently, sorting facilities may deem entire bins of recycling as trash if there are non-recyclables in with them.This means that all of the plastic, glass and paper you assumed was going to be used to make recycled products is really just sitting in a landfill, releasing toxic chemicals into the ecosystem and finding its way into the digestive systems of birds and other wildlife.

In order to make it easier to avoid this, we’ve put together a list of 11 items you should never recycle.

1. Paper towels and tissues

While these products are made of paper and technically recyclable, they are too small to be sorted at recycling facilities. Paper towels and tissues are also often covered in grease, food or things that you coughed into them. Since that can contaminate other recyclables, your whole bin could get sent a landfill instead.

2. Plastic bags

Plastic bags are technically recyclable, but it’s unlikely they are accepted through your curbside recycling program. You know how you always see plastic bags stuck in trees? There is something about how a plastic bag is shaped that makes it easy for them to get stuck places, and they wreak havoc on machinery at sorting stations.

Sorting stations will also not open plastic bags that have recyclable materials inside. So every time you’ve wrapped up recyclable items and put them into a recycling bin, you’ve actually just tossed them into a landfill. Remember: these bags are recyclable, they just require a different system. A list of plastic bag drop-off locations can be found here.

3. Shredded paper

Like paper towels and tissues, this type of paper is too small to be handled at sorting stations. When the paper is shredded it lowers the grade and quality, meaning many facilities won’t accept it. The best way to avoid shredded paper going into a landfill is to simply not to shred it. Nowadays shredding documents doesn’t serve much of a purpose anyway; whatever shady bookkeeping or money-laundering scheme you have going on is probably discoverable online, so might as well keep the documents intact. Kidding, but please don’t shred paper.

4. Pizza boxes (sometimes)

Sometimes pizza boxes are fine to put in the recycling bin, but other times they can contaminate other recyclables and send everything to a landfill. If there is food still stuck to any part of the pizza box it could be labeled as trash at the sorting facility. Be sure to suck all that processed cheese and grease off the cardboard before throwing it into the bin.

5. Styrofoam

Styrofoam is actually a Greek word that means “terrible idea.” Okay, that’s not true, but it might as well be. Experts believe Styrofoam could take a million years to decompose (if it ever does at all). Very rarely is it accepted through curbside programs, but a list of drop-off locations can be found here.

6. Clothing hangers

Most recycling programs do not accept clothing hangers, but you know who does? Dry cleaners! Hangers are like an oddly shaped type of currency to them. Estimates are that only 15 percent of clothing hangers are ever recycled, leading to more unnecessary plastic and metal ending up in landfills.

7. Food containers

Your food container is most likely recyclable, depending on the material, but only if there is no food in it. The containers do not need to be sparkling clean when you throw them in the bin, but all of the food does need to be removed, including those globs of almond butter that never want to leave the side of the jar.

8. Different types of glass 

Not all glass is equal and different types require different processing. Glass that is used to make windows, drinking glasses and mirrors is treated with chemicals that change their melting temperature. This kind of glass can cause damage to machines at recycling facilities, and unfortunately, very few options exist for recycling them. A good option would be to try and reuse them as best as possible. Broken glass is not accepted at recycling facilities as it could injure workers.

9. Energy efficient light bulbs

The energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, so special care needs to be taken to ensure that they do not end up in a landfill. Mercury can pose a health hazard to people and wildlife. The growing amount of CFL bulbs finding their way into landfills is alarming many people; seven states have now made it illegal to discard these bulbs into a landfill.

The safest way to ensure your old CFLs don’t end up in a landfill is to bring them to any major home improvement store, such as Lowe’s or Home Depot, as they often have CFL recycling programs.

10. Plastic toys

Kid’s plastic toys often contain so many different materials that separating and recycling them is often impossible. Luckily, in most cases, there’s no need to recycle these toys as they can be reused for multiple generations, provided future generations are still super into the Ninja Turtles. The Salvation Army and Goodwill accept toy donations and normally toy stores will have a donation bin located on site, as well.

11. Coffee cups

Many of you are going to be shocked to learn that in most cases your disposable coffee cup is not recyclable. Most coffee cups contain a layer of wax that prevents the cup from getting soggy but this makes it very difficult for the paper to be extracted from the wax. Starbucks is currently going through trials of using 100 percent recyclable coffee cups.

Recycle rules in your area may be different. Make sure you’re up to date on what the guidelines are for where you live and make this a low trash/no trash holiday season.
