7 Signs You Should Be Taking Probiotics

Have you taken an antibiotic over the past year?

Well, if you are like most people these days, you have.

Did you know that antibiotics completely destroy your healthy gut bacteria?

Even if you took one 7 years ago – if you have not replenished the good guys within your gut, chances are really high that you are struggling with imbalance, maybe unknowingly.

1. Antibiotics

Antibiotic literally means “anti-life” –  that’s pretty powerful.

They are designed to kill and they don’t discriminate between the good and bad bacteria, unfortunately.

TIP: Double dose your probiotics for the length of time you were on an antibiotic post-treatment to ensure you are repopulating the good guys! (example: if you were on an antibiotic for 14 days, double dose for 14 days afterwards to help repopulate and get your system back on track.)

2. Food Poisoning

Bad bacteria is lurking in your gut when this happens and it’s important to fight the bad guys.

Probiotics help replenish the good guys and get your digestion moving as it should.

TIP: Taking probiotics regularly gives the body a better defense against any foreign invaders you may come into contact with.

3. Digestive Disturbances

Be sure you are consuming a healthy diet first.

Eliminate hard-to-digest foods such as processed, packaged and fried foods, dairy, gluten, sugar and soy and aim to eat more REAL foods as nature intended.

Probiotics will further support your efforts to bring balance to your gut.

TIP: Ginger is great if you are experiencing any type of digestive distress. I love using extra ginger is most of my green juices, but it’s also great as a tea or as a delicious addition to your meals.

4. Skin Conditions

Our external environment is a direct reflection of our internal environment. That includes rashes, acne, rosacea, eczema, etc.

If your skin does not clear from diet and probiotics alone, you may consider using digestive aids such as apple cider vinegar to promote stomach acid production and enzymes.

Other agents to heal the intestinal lining include l-glutamine and aloe vera.

TIP: Be sure to have your hormones checked, too, to rule out any imbalances so often associated with acne.

5. Mood Disorders

The health of our gut is so closely tied to the health of our brain.

That’s why improving the integrity of your gut has such an effect on the function of your neurotransmitters.

TIP: Further supporting your body with B vitamins and paying attention to the health of your kidneys are also key factors to a balanced mood.

6. Weak Immunity

Essential Oils Summit May 11th-18th! Be There!!

 

For the last 6 weeks I have been involved in Dr. Josh Axe’s 8-week Institute of Nutritional Leadership training and am really enjoying the experience. The Probiotics And Peanut Connection

 

I found this article about probiotics interesting and thought-provoking, partly because it speaks to the problem of trying to use vaccines as a preventative tool since they treat only one thing and encourage viruses to mutate….which means needing to come up with more and more vaccines. And it’s exciting to read that something natural like probiotics could not only be a better answer than vaccines (I already knew that!), but also a way to treat or prevent allergies. Good news for a lot of people!

Vaccines are theoretically one-mode immune system stimulants that target only one strain of virus at a time. (This can only encourage viruses to mutate, putting the immune system at greater risk to wild type viruses.)

Just think — modern medicine may one day embrace powerful probiotic supplements to encourage the colonization of helpful bacteria. It’s these probiotics that respond to stress in the body, activating the immune system against all infections. Probiotic strain cures peanut allergies in 80 percent of children

Now scientists in Australia at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute are finding out that probiotics are the biggest step toward curing fatal peanut allergies in children. The 30 children involved in this study were allergic to peanuts at the onset. During the 18-month study, the children were given both peanut flour and a probiotic called Lactobacillus rhamnosus. After a year and a half, 80 percent of the children were able to tolerate peanuts. It appears that Lactobacillus rhamnosus is the missing piece of the children’s immune systems. Lead researcher Mimi Tang said the families involved in the study were so impressed with the probiotic treatment that they said it “changed their lives.”

Indeed, understanding the commensal bacteria system in the human body and supplementing with the appropriate bacteria could cure various allergies and protect the body from multiple pathogens.

“These findings provide the vital first step towards developing a cure for peanut allergy and possibly for all food allergies,” Mimi Tang told Melbourne’s Herald Sun. “It will be a major advance for medical science if we can find a treatment that is curative. It will change the lives completely for children and adults who have peanut allergies,” she said.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus is often found in yogurt, but the amount used in the study was highly concentrated and was equivalent to 44 pounds of yogurt. By the end of the 18-month study, the children were able to tolerate up to 14 peanuts per day or four grams of peanut protein. The normal recovery rate during this time period is only 4 percent. The probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus boosts recovery from a meager 4 percent to an astounding 80 percent.

Feeling Stressed? Rub Your Ear!

 

I knew the ear contained points to all the organs and systems in the body, like the soles of the feet do in reflexology, and I featured a post recently on using ear massage as a way of relaxation and self-help. But I didn’t know there was one spot on the ear specifically for relieving stress (plus helps with circulation, energy, pain relief and inflammation!) until coming across the following information. Read on to find out about the Shen Men spot and other points that can help you be a happier, healthier you….. 

 

In a recent television show about healthy living on Russian national television, a doctor of medical science and psychiatry, Mark Sandomirsky, advised his patients to relieve stress using this easy technique.

The source of stress often varies and people almost always experience it in different ways. Once the stress sets in, most people however, are left feeling uncomfortable and anxious, followed by a sensation of heaviness or even pain in parts of the body.

The first step to releasing stress is to rid yourself of the the negative emotions. Don’t bottle them up within yourself. After doing so, next is to remove the physical effects of the stress. This is where the psycho-reflexology comes into play. Our body has certain anti-stress points and all that needs to be done is simply massage these points to relieve the stress.

The ancient Chinese referred to this point as Shen Men or “The Gate of Heaven.” Shen Men is a anti-stress point that decreases stress, boosts energy flow, and strengthens the overall health of the body.

This acupressure point  also reduces inflammation and can relieve pain in almost every part of the body. Massaging the Shen Men point will relieve stress and is located in the centre of the upper third of the ear (refer to picture/chart below for exact location).

Dr Sandomirsky advices:

  • Using a cotton bud press this point and gently massage it. Breathe deeply.
  • Then listen to your body carefully.
  • Keep breathing deeply.
  • When you inhale look to the left, and on the exhale look to the right.
  • You will feel how your body calms down.

Extra tips:

  • Massage this point using your fingers.
  • Massage it well every time you are stressed.
  • You can also repeat this technique every night before you go to bed.

Auricular Acupuncture – Master Points

Point Zero (Ear Center, Point of Support, Umbilical Cord, Solar Plexus)

Function:

This master point is the geometrical and physiological center of the whole auricle. It brings the whole body towards homeostasis, producing a balance of energy, hormones and brain activity.

It supports the actions of other auricular points and returns the body to the idealized state which was present in the womb.

On the auricular map, Point Zero is located where the umbilical cord would rise from the abdomen of the inverted fetus pattern found on the ear.

Point Zero serves as the ’autonomic brain’ that controls visceral organs through peripheral nerve ganglia.

Shen Men (Spirit Gate, Divine Gate)  

Function:

The purpose of Shen Men is to tranquilize the mind and to allow a harmonious connection to essential spirit.

This master point alleviates stress, pain, tension, anxiety, depression, insomnia, restlessness, and excessive sensitivity.

Utilized in almost all treatment plans, including auricular acupuncture analgesia for surgery.

Shen Men was one of the first points emphasized for the detoxification from drugs and the treatment of alcoholism and substance abuse.

It is also used to reduce coughs, fever, inflammatory diseases, epilepsy and high blood pressure.

Sympathetic Autonomic point  

Function:

This master point balances sympathetic nervous system activation with parasympathetic sedation. This point is the primary ear point for diagnosing visceral pain and for inducing sedation effects during acupuncture.

It improves blood circulation by facilitating vasodilation, corrects irregular or rapid heart beats, reduces angina pain, alleviates Raynaud’s disease, reduces visceral pain from internal organs, calms smooth muscle spasms.

It is also used for the treatment of kidney stones, gall stones, gastric ulcers, abdominal distension, asthma and dysfunctions of the autonomic nervous system.

Allergy point  

Function:

This master point leads to a general reduction in inflammatory reactions related to allergies, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma.

It is used for the elimination of toxic substances, the excretion of metabolic wastes and treatment of anaphylactic shock.

In Oriental medicine, the top surface of the Allergy point is pricked with a needle to reduce excess qi or it is pinched to diminish allergic reactions.

Thalamus point (Subcortex, Brain, Pain Control point) 

Function:

This master point represents the whole diencephalon, including the thalamus and the hypothalamus. It affects thalamic relay connections to the cerebral cortex and hypothalamic regulation of autonomic nerves and endocrine glands.

The thalamus is like a preamplifier for signals sent to the cerebral cortex, refining the neural message and eliminating meaningless background noise.

The thalamus is the highest level of the supraspinal gate control system, and so is used for most pain disorders, acute and chronic, and is frequently used for auricular acupuncture analgesia.

It also reduces neurasthenia, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, over-excitement, sweating, swelling, shock, hypertension, coronary disorders, cardiac arrhythmias, Reynaud’s disease, gastritis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, liver disorders and gall bladder dysfunctions.

In TCM, the Thalamus Subcortex point strengthens the brain and calms the mind.

Endocrine point (Internal Secretion, Pituitary Gland)  

Function:

This master point brings endocrine hormones to their appropriate homeostatic levels, either raising or lowering glandular secretions.

It functions by activating the pituitary gland below the brain.

The pituitary is the master gland controlling all other endocrine glands.

It relieves hypersensitivity, rheumatism, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, irregular menstruation, sexual dysfunction and urogenital disorders.

It has anti-allergic, anti-rheumatic, and anti-inflammatory effects.

In TCM treatments, it reduces dampness and relieves swelling and edema

Master Oscillation point (Laterality point, Switching point) 

Function:

This master point balances laterality disorders related to the left and right cerebral hemispheres.

This point is used to alleviate dyslexia, learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder.

People who have unusual or hypersensitive reactions to prescription medications or autoimmune problems often need to be treated for oscillation.

Tranquilizer point (Valium Analog point, Hypertensive point) 

Function:

This master point produces a general sedation effect, facilitating overall relaxation and relieving generalized anxiety. It also reduces high blood pressure and chronic stress.

Master Sensorial point (Eye point)  

Function:

This master point controls the sensory cerebral cortex areas of the parietal lobe, the temporal lobe, and the occipital lobe.

It is used to reduce any unpleasant or excessive sensation, such as tactile paresthesia, ringing in the ears and blurred vision.

Master Cerebral point (Master Omega, Nervousness, Neurasthenia, Worry) 

Function:

This master point represents the pre-frontal lobe of the brain, the part of the cerebral cortex which makes decisions and initiates conscious action.

Stimulation of this auricular point diminishes nervous anxiety, fear, worry, lassitude, dream-disturbed sleep, poor memory, obsessive-compulsive disorders, psychosomatic disorders, and the negative pessimistic thinking which often accompanies chronic pain problems.

And now for a recipe to make and keep on hand as a remedy for sore throats and chest colds…..

Winter Sore Throat Tea from Julie Taylor with Barbara Metts; a good way to get off antibiotics and start using natural medicines. Make sure you have some of this ready and on hand for sore throats and chest colds….makes about 2 cups

1. Two lemons thoroughly cleaned and sliced
2. Two piece of ginger about the size of your pointer and middle finger together sliced into coin size pieces
3. Honey (about 1 cup or your preferences)
(You can also add ground cinnamon – about a teaspoon)

In a 12-16 oz. jar, combine lemon slices and sliced ginger. Pour honey (organic is best) over it slowly. It may take a little time to let the honey sink down and around the lemon and ginger slices. Make sure when the honey has filled in all the voids that there is enough to cover the top of the lemon slices. Close jar and put it in the fridge, it will form into a “jelly.” To serve, spoon jelly into a mug and pour boiling water over it.

PERSONAL NOTE: Manuka honey would be best, if you have it. And I highly recommend using organic lemons, ginger, and cinnamon, and structured water when you make the “tea.”

Makes about 2 cups

Stores in fridge 2-3 months.

Free Natural First Aid Kit pdf

 

If I had known about this a few days ago I could have included it in my previous post Tips, Tips, And More Tips, but I just got a notice about it this morning. It’s a pdf put together by Dr. Nikolas Hedberg that has a number of all-natural remedies you can use for treating allergies, colds and flu, sinus infections, stomach bugs, anxiety, nausea, jet lag and more. Some tips involve buying a number of supplements, but others a very simple and use items you may already have on hand.

One simple suggestion for treating colds and flu I’d never heard of before was this:

One old trick that seems to work is to lie on your side and fill one ear with 3% hydrogen peroxide (not food grade–it’s too strong) and let it sit in your ear for 5-10 minutes. Then turn over on your other side and fill the other ear with hydrogen peroxide for 5-10 minutes. You’ll hear and feel a bubbling sensation which is the peroxide cleaning up your ear. No one knows why this works but it has worked for me and many others in the past.

And the tip for dealing with allergies:

When allergy season comes and you are looking for quick relief, look no further than my recommended “Triple Strike” of vitamin C, quercetin and nettles. These will help your body rapidly metabolize histamine and reduce inflammation. Allergies are basically an exaggerated immune system response to something outside of the body such as pollen, mold, grasses etc. so your goal is to reduce this response and help metabolize all the extra histamine in your body. Take one capsule of vitamin C every few hours and take 1 capsule of quercetin and nettles
at the same time every few hours.

One other trick that works well is to drink a large glass of salt water in the morning with 1/4 to a 1/2 teaspoon of unrefined Celtic sea salt and drink a lot of water the rest of the day. The salt will help reduce the allergic response. It must be true unrefined Celtic sea salt (or Himalayan crystal salt) and not processed salt. You’ll know because it looks gray and is still moist.

I’m not surprised that vitamin C is a part of the tip because it seems to be turning up everywhere these days as a miracle worker for just about anything. Be sure and read the Self-help Health posts about how it can help ward off gum disease, reduce the risk of stroke and more. Another thing that comes up in a lot of the remedies he suggests is colloidal silver/Silvercillin, which I feel is something no first aid kit should be without. I also feel strongly that structured water should be used in any healing protocol calling for water.

Dealing With Sinus Congestion Naturally, Plus A Free Love Your Body MP3

 Nothing like sinus congestion to make your life miserable, so it’s good to know there are a number of all-natural ways of alleviating the situation. Here are just a few….

Sinusitis may seem like a relatively minor thing to worry about… until you have it. This type of congestion and pressure can really take a toll on your day, making it very difficult to concentrate and go about your tasks. Regardless of whether it is due to allergies, a cold or another bug, it is always highly uncomfortable.

This condition is characterized by trouble breathing, stuffiness and a heavy feeling in your head, along with sneezing and sometimes pain behind the eyes.

Instead of taking medications, which may lead to drowsiness, fatigue or other unwanted side effects, you may instead choose to tackle a sinus problem using the principles of one of the oldest health philosophies in the world: Ayurveda.

Ayurvedic medicine originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It is a holistic system of health which focuses on the well-being of the entire body and mind, as opposed to treating just one specific condition. Balance is one of its most important underlying principles, and the prevention and healing of illnesses through a nutritious diet and herbal remedies are crucial parts of the system.

For sinusitis or sinus congestion, many Ayurvedic practitioners recommend warm food that is easy to digest, along with plenty of fruits and veggies. Soups and stews fit well into this plan. Heavy meals, oily and fried foods, and cold foods and beverages are often avoided at this time, as they are thought to aggravate the problem.

Some foods and herbs that are often recommended to clear the sinuses are garlic, ginger, black pepper and honey. A warm preparation is best, so, for example, a fresh ginger tea sweetened with raw honey and a dash of black pepper added is a great sinus-friendly tincture. As an alternative to black pepper, cinnamon is also often utilized in Ayurvedic medicine.

Steam may also be quite beneficial to the sinuses. Boiling water, then adding a few drops of essential oil (such as clove, cinnamon and/or oils in the mint family), and inhaling the fragrant steam for up to 20 minutes can do wonders in clearing the congestion. The fragrance of freshly crushed garlic is also traditionally utilized to aid in sinus problems.

Dr. Gowthaman, the founder and medical director of rVita Ayurveda and Yoga Centers, recommends crushing garlic cloves, combining with honey, and taking twice daily before meals to boost the immune system and relieve sinus pain. He also recommends freshly squeezed onion juice combined with honey to clear up stuffiness and nasal blockages.

Drape a towel over your head and around the bowl, keeping your face at arm’s length away. Breathe in the steam for about 10 minutes. Also, sleeping with an extra pillow or two under your head when you’re congested will help drain your sinuses. And make sure your bedroom climate is humid, and run a humidifier while you sleep to further thin the mucus in your nose. For another natural remedy, try nasal breathing strips, which lift the sides of the nose to help open nasal passages.
