Hydrogen Peroxide: Inexpensive Multi-purpose Health, Household And Beauty Aid

Hydrogen peroxide is one of those readily available, inexpensive items that everyone is familiar with, but may not be aware of the wide variety of uses it has. It is definitely a multi-purpose health, household and beauty aid that should always be on hand, and this article by Andrea Harper does a good job of highlighting a number of ways hydrogen peroxide can help make your life easier and healthier. Just like apple cider vinegar and baking soda, no home should be without it……

By Andrea Harper

Hydrogen peroxide is the only germicidal agent composed only of water and oxygen. Like ozone, it kills disease organisms by oxidation! Hydrogen peroxide is considered the worlds safest all natural effective sanitizer. It kills microorganisms by oxidizing them, which can be best described as a controlled burning process. When Hydrogen peroxide reacts with organic material it breaks down into oxygen and water.

1. Whiten Clothes – An Alternative to Beach

Add a cup of peroxide to white clothes in your laundry to whiten them. Peroxide is great to get rid of blood stains on clothes and carpets. If there is blood on clothing, just pour directly on the spot, let it sit for about a minute, then rub and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

2. Health

Your body makes hydrogen peroxide to fight infection which must be present for our immune system to function correctly. White blood cells are known as leukocytes. A sub-class of leukocytes called neutrophils produce hydrogen peroxide as the first line of defense against toxins, parasites, bacteria, viruses and yeast.

3. Rejuvenating Detoxifying Bath

Use about 2 quarts 3% hydrogen peroxide to a tub of warm water. Soak at least 1/2 hour, adding hot water as needed to maintain a comfortable water temperature.

4. Foot Fungus

To cure a foot fungus, simply spray a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry.

5. Douche

Add 2 capfuls of 3% hydrogen peroxide in warm distilled water once or twice a week to remove even chronic yeast infections.

6. Colonic or Enema

For a colonic, add 1 cup (8 ozs.) 3% H202 to 5 gallons warm water. (Do not exceed this amount) For an enema, add 1 tablespoon of 3% H202 to a quart of warm distilled water.

7. Infections

Soak any infections or cuts in 3% for five to ten minutes several times a day. Even gangrene that would not heal with any medicine has been healed by soaking in hydrogen peroxide. Put half a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus or other skin infections.

8. Bird Mites Infections

Patients infected by tiny mites report that hydrogen peroxide effectively kills the mites on their skins. They spray it on their skin a couple of times (with a few minutes in between the applications) with amazing results.

9. Sinus Infections

A tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide added to 1 cup of non-chlorinated water can be used as a nasal spray. Depending on the degree of sinus involvement, one will have to adjust the amount of peroxide used.

10. Wound Care

3% H2O2 is used medically for cleaning wounds, removing dead tissue, and as an oral debriding agent. Peroxide stops slow (small vessel) wound bleeding/oozing, as well.

Some sources recommend soaking infections or cuts for five to ten minutes several times a day. However, washing and rinsing action is sufficient. You shouldn’t leave the solution on open tissue for extended periods of time as, like many oxidative antiseptics, hydrogen peroxide causes mild damage to tissue in open wounds. Therefore it is important to use with caution.

Personal Care

Mouthwash / Tooth Care

Healing Properties: Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. You will not have canker sores and your teeth will be whiter. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% hydrogen peroxide into your mouth and hold it for 10 minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly.

Personal Note: I would be careful with this and any of the other tips where you are using H2O2 in your mouth, as it may damage tooth enamel.

11. Mouthwash

Many people don’t realize that hydrogen peroxide makes a very effective and inexpensive mouthwash. Use a mixture of equal parts 3% H202 and water – add a dash of liquid chlorophyll for flavoring, if desired.

12. Toothpaste

Use baking soda and add enough 3% H202 to make a paste. You can also add some crystal salt.

13. Toothbrush

Or, just dip your brush in 3% H202 and brush. Soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide to keep them free of germs.

14. Tooth Ache

Hydrogen peroxide is not a pain killer; however, as an anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-fungal agent, it is effective at treating the pathogen that is causing the infection. The following is from my own personal experience: My dentist wanted to give me a root canal some time ago as one tooth was inflamed and, in her opinion, would die. I felt some discomfort but told her that I would give it  a chance to heal. I rinsed with hydrogen peroxide (several times a day) as well as coconut oil (once a day). The discomfort went away and I have had no further problems with the tooth.

15. Tooth Whitening

Having used 3% hydrogen peroxide as a mouth wash for sometime ago, I am thrilled to note that my teeth have been beautifully and effortlessly whitened. I used to pay so much for professional whitening, those silly strips and uncomfortable trays. Live and learn.

NOTE: Do not swallow any peroxide. When the peroxide rinse is done, be sure to rinse out your mouth with water.

16. Hair Lightening

Peroxide is a bleaching agent and is used for lightened hair. Dilute 3% hydrogen peroxide with water (50 / 50) and spray the solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not have the peroxide burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages, but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually so it’s not a drastic change.

17. Contact Lenses

Hydrogen peroxide is used as a disinfectant in CIBA Vision’s Clear Care no rub contact lens cleaning solution, due to its ability to break down the proteins that build up on the lens from the eye’s immune response, resulting in increased comfort for those with sensitive eyes.

Sanitizing / Disinfectant / Cleaning

18. Straight or Diluted Hydrogen Peroxide

Clean your counters and table tops with hydrogen peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters. Use hydrogen peroxide to clean glass and mirrors with no smearing.

Keep a spray bottle of 3% (straight) to disinfect the interior of the refrigerator and kids’ school lunch boxes.

19. In the Dishwasher

Add 2 oz. of 3% hydrogen peroxide to your regular washing formula.

Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour or spray hydrogen peroxide (and then vinegar) on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria.

A combination of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide makes a cheap, effective and non-toxic disinfectant agent and is said to be more effective at killing pathogens than bleach.  As it is non-toxic, you can use it to disinfect fruits and vegetables, as well as pet toys, equipment and cages.  In tests run at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, pairing vinegar and hydrogen peroxide mists, kills virtually all Salmonella, Shigella, or E. coli bacteria on heavily contaminated food and surfaces.

You need TWO spray bottles. DO NOT MIX the solutions together. Put straight vinegar in one and straight Hydrogen peroxide in the other spray bottle.

NOTE: Light destroys peroxide rather quickly. It’s best to leave it in its original bottle and screw in a spray head. DO NOT DILUTE THEM.

Remember for any sanitizer to work properly, the surface has to be clean before you use it.

When you want to sanitize a surface (vegetables, cutting board, counters, sink, cages, toys. toilets, floors, etc.), spray one (it doesn’t matter which one you use first) on the surface, then you spray on the other.  When they mix, for a brief time the chemical action of the two make a very powerful sanitizer.  You can rinse off the surface afterwards, if you want, but the result is non-toxic.

20. Mold

Clean with hydrogen peroxide when your house becomes a bio-hazard after its invaded by toxic mold, such as those with water damage.

21. Humidifiers/Steamers

Use 1 pint 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 gallon of water.

22. Laundry / Stain Removing

3% hydrogen peroxide is the best stain lifter if used fairly soon – although blood stains as old as 2 days have been successfully lifted with hydrogen peroxide, although it will bleach or discolor many fabrics. If a little peroxide is poured onto the stain, it will bubble up in the area of the blood, due to a reaction with catalase. After a few minutes the excess liquid can be wiped up with a cloth or paper towel and the stain will be gone.

3% H2O2 must be applied to clothing before blood stains can be accidentally “set” with heated water. Cold water and soap are then used to remove the peroxide treated blood.

23. Washing/Laundry

You can also add a cup of hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

Peroxide is a perfect alternate solution to keep those clothes white. Also, when chlorinating clothes, they tend to wear out faster – peroxide won’t do that.

Food Preparation

24. Vegetable Soak

Use as a vegetable wash or soak to kill bacteria and neutralize chemicals. Add 1/4 cup 3% H202 to a full sink of cold water. Soak light skinned (light lettuce) 20 minutes, thicker skinned (like cucumbers) 30 minutes. Drain, dry and refrigerate. Prolongs freshness.

If time is a problem, spray vegetables (and fruits) with a solution of 3%. Let stand for a few minutes, rinse and dry.

25.Meat Sanitizing

You can also use it to rinse off your meat before cooking.

26. Leftover tossed salad

Spray with a solution of 1/2 cup water and 1 Tbsp. 5%. Drain, cover and refrigerate.

27. Marinade

Place meat, fish or poultry in a casserole (avoid using aluminium pans). Cover with a dilute solution of equal parts of water and 3% H202. Place loosely covered in refrigerator for 1/2 hour. Rinse and cook.

28. Sprouting Seeds

Add 1 ounce 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 pint of water and soak the seeds overnight. Add the same amount of hydrogen peroxide each time you rinse the seeds. You can also use a mixture of 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 32 parts water to improve your plants’ root system.

Grades of Hydrogen Peroxide

A) 3.5% Pharmaceutical Grade: This is the grade sold at your local drugstore or supermarket. This product is not recommended for internal use. It contains an assortment of stabilizers which shouldn’t be ingested. Various stabilizers include acetanilide, phenol, sodium stanate and tertrasodium phosphate.

B) 6% Beautician Grade: This is used in beauty shops to color hair and is not recommended for internal use.

C) 30% Reagent Grade: This is used for various scientific experimentation and also contains stabilizers. It is also not for internal use.

D) 30% to 32% Electronic Grade: This is used to clean electronic parts and not for internal use.

E) 35% Technical Grade: This is a more concentrated product than the Reagent Grade and differs slightly in that phosphorus is added to help neutralize any chlorine from the water used to dilute it.

F) 35% Food Grade: This is used in the production of foods like cheese, eggs, and whey-containing products. It is also sprayed on the foil lining of aseptic packages containing fruit juices and milk products. THIS IS THE ONLY GRADE RECOMMENDED FOR INTERNAL USE.

G) 90%: This is used as an oxygen source for rocket fuel.

Only 35% Food Grade hydrogen peroxide is recommended for internal use. At this concentration, however, hydrogen peroxide is a very strong oxidizer and if not diluted, it can be extremely dangerous or even fatal. Any concentrations over 10% can cause neurological reactions and damage to the upper gastrointestinal tract. There have been two known fatalities in children who ingested 27% and 40% concentrations of H202. Another report tells of a 26 month old female who swallowed one mouthful of 35% H202. She immediately began vomiting, followed by fainting and respiratory arrest. Fortunately, she was under emergency room care and although she experienced erosion and bleeding of the stomach and esophagus, she survived the incident. When she was re-examined 12 days later, the areas involved had healed (J Toxicol Clin Toxicol 90;28(1):95-100).

Personal note:  As with ANY food, drug, or supplement, using the product according to instructions is key to safety.  If someone uses too much, then of course ramifications may be felt.  We’ve NEVER heard of ANY harmful side effects from the correct usage of Food Grade hydrogen peroxide.

35% Food Grade H202 must be….

1. Handled carefully (direct contact will burn the skin- immediate flushing with water is recommended).

2. Diluted properly before use.

3. Stored safely and properly (after making a dilution the remainder should be stored tightly sealed in the freezer).

One of the most convenient methods of dispensing 35% H202 is from a small glass eye dropper bottle. These can be purchased at your local drugstore. Fill this with the 35% H202 and store the larger container in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator until more is needed. Store the eye dropper bottle in the refrigerator. The drops are mixed with either 6 to 8 ounces of distilled water, juice, aloe vera juice or gel.

(Don’t use chlorinated tap water to dilute the peroxide!)

Here’s more about this “miracle in a bottle” …….

Spray down the shower with hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria and viruses.

Wash shower curtains with hydrogen peroxide to remove mildew and soap scum. Place curtains in machine with a bath towel and your regular detergent. Add 1 cup full strength 3% hydrogen peroxide to the rinse cycle.

Use for towels that have become musty smelling. Combine 1/2 cup peroxide and 1/2 cup vinegar and let stand for 15 minutes, then wash as normal. Gets rid of the smell.

Use hydrogen peroxide to control fungi present in aquariums. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt your fish. Use sparingly for this purpose.

De-skunking solution: Combine 1 quart 3% H2O2, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 teaspoon Dawn dish detergent, 2 quarts warm water.

Clean your sponges: Soak them for 10 minutes in a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and warm water in a shallow dish. Rinse the sponges thoroughly afterward.

Remove baked-on crud from pots and pans. Combine hydrogen peroxide with enough baking soda to make a paste, then rub onto the dirty pan and let it sit for a while. Come back later with a scrubby sponge and some warm water, and the baked-on stains will lift right off.

Whiten bathtub grout: First dry the tub thoroughly, then spray it liberally with hydrogen peroxide. Let it sit (it may bubble slightly) for a little while, then come back and scrub the grout with an old toothbrush. You may have to repeat the process a few times.

Clean the toilet bowl: Pour half a cup of hydrogen peroxide into the toilet bowl, let stand for 20 minutes, then scrub clean.

Brighten dingy floors: Combine half a cup of hydrogen peroxide with one gallon of hot water, then go to town on your flooring. Because it’s so mild, it’s safe for any floor type, and there’s no need to rinse.

Clean kids’ toys and play areas: Hydrogen peroxide is a safe cleaner to use around kids, or anyone with respiratory problems because it’s not a lung irritant. Spray toys, toy boxes, doorknobs, and anything else your kids touch on a regular basis.

Help out your plants:To ward off fungus, add a little hydrogen peroxide to your spray bottle the next time you’re spritzing plants.

Dab hydrogen peroxide on pimples or acne to help clear skin.

Remove yellowing from lace curtains or tablecloths: Fill a sink with cold water and a 2 cups of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Soak for at least an hour, rinse in cold water and air dry.

Use it to remove ear wax. Use a solution of 3% with olive or almond oil. Add a couple drops of oil first then H2O2. After a few minutes, tilt head to remove solution and wax. Can also be used for swimmer’s ear.

Hydrogen peroxide could really be called oxygen water, since it is basically the same chemical make up as water but with an extra oxygen atom (H2O2). Because of this, it breaks down quickly and harmlessly into oxygen and water.

It is found in all living material.

Your white blood cells naturally produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to fight bacteria and infections.

Fruit and vegetables naturally produce hydrogen peroxide. This is one of the reasons why it is so healthy to eat fresh fruit and vegetables.

It is found in massive dosages in the mother’s first milk, called colostrum, and is transferred to the baby to boost their immune system.

It is found in rain water because some of the H20 in the atmosphere receives an additional oxygen atom from the ozone (O3) and this H2O2 makes plants grow faster.

Hydrogen peroxide has a very simple composition: just water and oxygen. However, its potency lies in its simplicity: it is a powerful antiseptic and can destroy a variety of pathogens through the process of oxidation.

While hydrogen peroxide is usually thought of as a disinfectant for minor cuts and scrapes, it can also be highly effective in halting colds and flu in their tracks. At the first sign of any distress (lethargy, coughing, sneezing, swollen glands, etc.), fill the cap with peroxide and fill your ear canal. Tilt head for 3 to 4 minutes (or longer) to retain (there may be some slight bubbling), then allow to drain out

The key to success with this home remedy is the timing. You must get the peroxide in the ear canal at the very first sign of illness for it to be effective. Miss the window and you will most likely suffer the full bout of the virus.

The theory behind the peroxide protocol came from Richard Simmons M.D., who hypothesized that colds and flu viruses enter the body through the ear canal, not the nose and throat. Like most other non-patentable therapies, the medical community at large ignored the hypothesis and the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide.

In 1938 German researchers used hydrogen peroxide to treat colds and flu with much success, but their research has also been all but ignored. However, even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide to kill influenza viruses.

Oregano: Flavorful Herb, Powerful Antibiotic And MORE!

Oregano is a well-known, often-used herb, especially when it comes to Mediterranean or Italian cooking. What’s nice is that it not only imparts flavor to food, but also adds a number of health benefits to the body. Did you know that oregano has eight times more antioxidants than apples and three times as much as blueberries? And oil of oregano is an even more potent form of support for the body; it helps with muscle and joint flexibility, works to resist harmful organisms, including candida, energizes the immune system, and strengthens respiratory health. So if you don’t have oregano in your kitchen AND your first aid kit, you’re really missing out on a star performer in both areas, just as this article from Nutrition and You points out….

one of two bowls (10" wide) of oregano(roundrockgarden.wordpress.com)

Oregano is a wonderful perennial culinary and medicinal herb. It has long been recognized as one of the “functional foods” for its nutritional, anti-oxidants and disease preventing properties. The herb, whose name means “delight of the mountains” in Greek, is native to the Mediterranean region. Botanically, it belongs to the mint (Lamiaceae) family, in the genus; Origanum, and is known scientifically as Origanum vulgare.

There are many cultivars of oregano cultivated across Europe, however, the influence of climate, season, and soil have greater effect on the composition of the essential oils than the difference between various species. Origanum heracleoticum is another Greek variety that is having characteristic sharp scent, and flavor. Sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) is one of closely related species of oregano.

Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) is different from origanum species, but related to the verbena family of herbs. It is used in place of oregano in many Central American regions.

Health benefits of Oregano

  • Oregano contains an impressive list of plant derived chemical compounds that are known to have disease preventing and health promoting properties.
  • The herb parts contain no cholesterol; however, are rich source of dietary fiber, which helps to control blood cholesterol levels.
  • Oregano contains several health benefiting essential oils such as carvacrol, thymol, limonene, pinene, ocimene, and caryophyllene. Its leaves and flowering stem has anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, carminative, cholagogue (helps gall bladder secretion), diaphoretic (sweat production), expectorant, stimulant, and mildly tonic properties. Its decoction is taken by mouth for the treatment of colds, influenza, mild fevers, indigestion, stomach upsets, and painful menstruation conditions.
  • Thymol is also been found to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal activities.
  • The herb is rich in poly-phenolic flavonoid anti-oxidants (vitamin A, carotenes, lutein, zea-xanthin, and cryptoxanthin) and has been rated as one of the plant sources with highest anti-oxidant activities. These compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease processes.
  • The active principles in the herb may improve gut motility in addition to increase the digestion power by facilitating copious secretion of gastro-intestinal juices.
  • This marvelous herb is an excellent source of minerals like potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure caused by high sodium. Manganese and copper are utilized by the body as co-factors for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Iron helps prevent anemia. Magnesium and calcium are important minerals for bone metabolism.
  • In addition, the fresh herb is an excellent source of antioxidant vitamin-C. Vitamin C helps human body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals.

Oregano is a proven super “functional food.” This herb is one of the foundation bases of healthy Mediterranean diet in addition to olive oil, fish and lots of greens, herbs and vegetables. It has an excellent nutritional profile (per USDA National Nutrient data base); just 100 g of oregano herb provides:

As with most herbs, fresh oregano is superior in flavor and richer in essential oils, vitamins and antioxidants than dried. Choose leaves with a vibrant green color and firm stem that are free of mold, discoloration and/or yellowing. Fresh leaves should be refrigerated, kept in a zip-lock bag or glass jar, or wrapped in a slightly damp paper towel. Dried leaves can be kept fresh for many months when stored in a tightly sealed container and placed in a cool, dark, dry place. For tips on growing, harvesting and drying your own oregano (and other herbs), check out this post by Round Rock Garden.

And Ethan A. Huff, staff writer for NaturalNews.com thinks oil of oregano is a must-have for any ‘prepper’ or survivalist…..

If a major emergency were to strike suddenly and without warning, leaving you and your family without the normal comforts of life for an indefinite period of time, would you have the tools, supplies and knowledge necessary for survival? Having extra food, water and even first aid supplies on hand is a great place to start when preparing for the worst, but what about long-term protection against infection and disease?

In their book Beyond Antibiotics: Healthier Options for Families, Michael A. Schmidt, Lendon H. Smith and Keith W. Sehnert explain how essential plant oils possess unique antimicrobial properties that naturally fight and eliminate harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi. And the essential oil of oregano in particular, which survivalists and “preppers” alike are discovering is a top choice for staying healthy during a crisis, is arguably the most potent and effective antimicrobial in the essential oil family.

Most people, if asked what they would stock their own “bug-out” bags with, would probably include basic medicines like painkillers and even antibiotics. But oil of oregano, which can be stored long-term without issue, has a leg up on traditional antibiotics, as it hits microbes where it really matters, blocking their ability to breathe. Antibiotics, on the other hand, are designed to obstruct the normal life cycle or metabolism of bacteria, which leaves room for them to mutate and develop resistance.

“One of the advantages essential oils, like oil of oregano, have over antibiotics is that bacteria do not develop resistance to essential oils,” explains the book Beyond Antibiotics: Healthier Options for Families. “Another advantage to essential oils is that some actually stimulate immune function.”

Oil of oregano 26 times stronger, more effective than conventional antiseptics like phenol

Dubbed the “Rolls Royce of natural antiseptics” by Dr. Cass Ingram, one of the world’s leading experts on the subject, oil of oregano is not only one of the most effective antimicrobial agents in existence — it is also one of the safest, producing no negative side effects and targeting only harmful pathogens while leaving beneficial ones alone.

Tests have also shown that oil of oregano beats out conventional antiseptics like phenol, which is commonly used in commercial antimicrobial products like Lysol, Pinesol and Cloraseptic, by a factor of 26 to one. This means that oil of oregano is 26 times more effective at targeting and destroying harmful pathogens than even the most powerful conventional products used to treat and sterilize things like hospital equipment.

Oil of oregano highly effective against yeasts, disease-causing free radicals

As far as its internal use, oil of oregano is “the best of the best,” according to a French doctor by the name of Belaiche, who in 1977 released his official oregano index, which uses oil of oregano as the base reference for comparing the bactericidal action of other substances. Oil of oregano is so effective, in other words, that an acclaimed doctor and research set it as the standard for comparison more than 30 years ago.

“The essential oil of oregano has always provided me with amazing results in treating infectious diseases,” writes Bee Wilder for Healing Naturally by Bee. “Besides oregano oil’s bactericidal action, it also prevents spasms, convulsions and nervous disorders.”

The same is true for yeasts like candida, which standard antibiotics cannot even treat. The believed-to-be primary active substance in oil of oregano, carvacrol, is highly effective at cleansing the urinary tract and bladder of not only bacterial invaders but also fungal and yeast invaders. Oil of oregano also helps protect the tissues of the body against inflammation by eliminating the free radicals that cause it, thus helping protect the body against debilitating illness.

I think oil of oregano is a must have whether you’re a prepper or not, and I recommend the one by Global Healing Center because their products always seem to be a step above what else in on the market. Here’s what Dr. Edward Group of GHC has to say about the special oregano oil he has created….

“I believe oregano oil is one of the greatest healing agents known to man and I’ve used it for years to enhance my own health and that of my patients. Because it’s so effective, I wanted to create our own product that was organically sourced. Thus began a two year journey to develop the most advanced, vegetarian and vegan friendly oregano oil formula in the world.

In looking for the best source of oregano, I found that oregano grown high atop the Turkish mountain area contained the highest levels of the active ingredient, carvacrol. Combining it with organic peppermint oil and 250,000 scoville heat units of capsicum (the active ingredient in cayenne) in an organic virgin olive oil base would produce a formula like no other. After much testing and many trial batches, we finalized a formula that provides optimal strength and effectiveness and are proud to offer it here.”
-Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, NP

Why is Ours the Best Oregano Oil Available?

  • 300% higher concentration of Carvacrol in the oregano oil (minimum of 80%)
  • No artificial, chemical or toxic byproducts
  • Suitable for vegetarians
  • Contains a cold-pressed laboratory grade formula of Wild Organic Mediterranean Oregano
  • Contains essential minerals and vitamins
  • Meets USDA National Organic Program standards (ECOCERT SA Organic Certification #1848TR0600z2e).

Start with a small dosage using the capsules provided for the oil and take with plenty of water and some food.

Here are some testimonials to get an idea of how people are using the oil and the results they are getting:

Amazing help!! (5/5)

I’ve used this amazing product to help my battle with sinus problems. I’ve battled “unknown” health issues for years and more recently have experienced “new” symptoms which have gotten worse. The debilitating symptoms I’ve been experiencing have greatly affected my quality of life. Yesterday, I happen to notice my bottle of Oil of Oregano in my cupboard. Out of desperation for relief, I took 5 drops in a capsule. I was astounded at the improvement in my well-being within a short time later. I was able to sit up and function after being bedridden with an uncomfortable feeling of malaise, pain and extreme fatigue for 2 full days. I have taken several servings since and I can say that I know have encouragement and hope that I can learn to cope and deal with this. I will diligently take this product. I might add that I have used other brands of Oil of Oregano in the past, both in capsule form and tincture, and GHC’s Oil of Oregano is far superior than the 5 other brands and forms I’ve tried. God Bless. –Anita

Love it! (5/5)

I am using this for candida cleansing. It does well on its own but does great in combination with GHC’s Paratrex and other yeast killers. I intend to use daily on its own once I kill off most of the candida. Great product and no bad taste because it is in the capsule.–Jenn

Wonderful product (5/5)

I use this product daily as much as I can and have found it to be very effective for digestion and for candida. I do use it in conjunction with GHC’s Latero Flora and also use Paratrex from time to time. If I start having increased digestion problems or a little constipation, I use all three for awhile and it always gets me back on track.

Candida/Yeast Overgrowth: The Major Health Problem You May Not Know You Have

Candida overgrowth effects millions of people and causes all sorts of health issues, some quite serious, and yet a lot of the population isn’t even aware it’s behind many of the problems they are having. I know it has certainly been an on-going issue for me and because candida/yeast overgrowth often goes hand in hand with other heath factors, such as heavy metals, parasites, and pH imbalance, it’s usually not an easy situation to treat….

Description Candida albicans 2.jpg

 Yeast/Candida Albicans

An overly-acidic system, which is common among those on a typical American diet, creates conditions that are ideal for the proliferation of unfriendly organisms. Candida, a type of single-celled fungal yeast that normally is kept in check if the body’s pH is properly balanced, starts to grow out of control when you eat too many acid-forming foods like sugar, bread products, and most proteins. Using prescription antibiotics, birth control pills, cortisone, and other drugs can also contribute to its growth, as can stress, exposure to environmental molds and chemicals, and nutritional deficiencies. Candida, in turn, makes the body more susceptible to parasites, impaired immune function, and many other dis-eases. Yeast overgrowth is thought to affect over 40 million Americans, and is especially prevalent in hyperactive children and those with ADD and ADHD.

“Conventional medical experts say that from 30-70% of the present population have a benign colonization of this yeast. I would bet any well trained naturopath will tell you that more than 90% of the population hosts a Candida colonization and most of them are not benign, not in our modern, processed, easy-food society. In addition, I have never met anyone suffering from any illness, who is not dealing with an overabundance of Candida.

When Candida leads to disease, conventional medical belief states that the infection can be localized, invasive, or systemic. Alternative medical belief would argue that a local infection such as a skin infection, vaginitis, or thrush is an indication that the gut, and likely the whole rest of the body, is already overwhelmed. Lending credence to this belief is the fact that the fastest way to kill any type of Candida infection, and insure it does not come right back, revolves around balancing the gut microbes..” – Michael Edwards for Natural News

Some doctors even theorize that candida or other systemic yeast/fungal infections cause, or at the very least contribute to, the development of cancer. This makes sense. A body-wide candida infection plays havoc with the immune system, which becomes overwhelmed and worn out from fighting the infection, so your body is naturally more susceptible to any number of things. Plus, candida excretes toxins that further weaken and harm the body. The major waste product of the yeast is acetaldehyde, which produces ethanol—a substance that may be great in cars, but in your body it causes excessive fatigue, and reduces strength and stamina. In addition, it destroys enzymes needed for cell energy, and causes the release of free radicals that can damage DNA. It also inhibits the absorption of iron, and since iron is one of the most important oxygen supports in the blood, ethanol indirectly creates low oxygen levels. When your body can’t oxygenate well, all sorts of dis-eases and diseases arise.

Typical symptoms of candida albicans overgrowth are:

  • feeling bad all over, yet the cause is unidentified
  • craving sweets, breads, or alcoholic beverages
  • sweets make your symptoms worse or give you a pick-me-up, followed by a let-down
  • hypoglycemia
  • persistent digestive disturbances and/or bloating after eating bread or other products made with yeast
  • persistent athlete’s foot, infection of the nails and skin, and/or “jock itch”
  • feeling ill when exposed to moldy places, perfumes, tobacco smoke and other chemicals
  • mood disorders
  • chronic fatigue
  • oral thrush
  • sinus infections
  • brain fog
  • recurring vaginal and/or urinary tract infections

Making real inroads against candida can seem like a long process at times for a variety of reasons, including the fact that the yeast actually sends out tendrils that help anchor it to the intestinal walls. It also enjoys a symbiotic relationship with any parasites and heavy metals in your system, so it’s hard to rid your body of one condition until you’ve gotten rid of the others, and vice versa, so there’s a catch-22 factor at play. And since all of these antagonists work to weaken your digestion and immune response, the body often no longer has the energy level required to easily deal with the situation. It’s also hard to overcome candida because it usually requires giving up, at least temporarily, some of the foods most Americans are so fond of—such as sugar, breads, biscuits, and muffins, or anything made with yeast, glutinous grains, aged cheeses, processed meats, alcoholic beverages, mushrooms, melons, coffee, vinegar and vinegar-containing condiments (mustard, mayonnaise, most salad dressings, etc.). And, unfortunately, candida can actually intensify your cravings for these very foods, so that doesn’t help the situation any.

If you have been diagnosed with candida, or feel like it might be an issue for you, it’s best to avoid these foods as much as possible and concentrate on eating lots of vegetables (watch out for high carbohydrate ones like corn, peas, and potatoes though), soaked/sprouted nuts and seeds, eggs, and lean protein like turkey, chicken or fish. Drinking lemon water on a regular basis (use a straw to help protect your tooth enamel from the acid), monitoring your pH (see post on pH Factor) and doing some colon and parasite cleansing will also help rid your body of the overgrowth. Taking a probiotic (see post on this topic), such as Primal Defense™ from Garden of Life, can be helpful as well.

Garden of Life also makes a product called Fungal Defense™ that is specifically designed to treat yeast/fungus conditions. It contains two enzymes (protease and cellulose) capable of literally digesting candida cell walls. The formula also includes two of the most potent anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-parasitic substances found in nature—wild oregano and olive leaf extract (their fungicidal components work synergistically to help eliminate yeast and fungus on contact). It’s further enhanced with garlic extract, known as Russian penicillin and nature’s premier antibiotic—and it doesn’t destroy friendly bacteria along with the bad. Yucca juice, a potent blood purifier that produces surfactants which help break down the lipid envelope that coats fungi and yeasts, is also in the list of ingredients, so the formula is very comprehensive as far as candida is concerned. I’ve used it a number of times over the years myself. By the way, Primal Defense and Fungal Defense are available at great discount  prices from iHerb.com (if you are a new customer, use code CJG192 and get $5 off and free shipping on orders of $20 or more,  an extra 5% off over $60 and earn loyalty points!).

For more information on candida, you can go to places such as www.thecandidayeastanswer.com (if you scroll down just over halfway on the page you’ll notice on the right where they offer a free download of a book on candida).  Although, remember that when a site has products and services to sell, the information they offer is often biased toward what they carry.

NOTE: There is a simple test to help tell if you have candida overgrowth: First thing in the morning, before you put ANYTHING in your mouth, get a clear glass of water. Better still; leave the glass of water by your bed the night before so you’ll remember to do the test when you first wake up. Work up a bit of saliva, and then spit it into the water. Check the glass every 15 minutes or so for up to one hour. If you have a candida infection, strings (like “legs”—remember the tendrils mentioned earlier that candida sends out) will travel down into the water from the saliva floating on top, or “cloudy” saliva will sink to the bottom of the glass, or cloudy specks will seem to be suspended in the water. If nothing develops in 30 to 45 minutes, you are probably candida free.

Stay tuned for an upcoming post on ways to treat and/or cleanse candida/yeast from the body.

Innovative Products For The Skin

Some women may get excited about new shoes, the latest Paris fashions, or adding more bling to their jewelry stash. Me, I get really jazzed when I read about or discover a new health product, like the Dragon’s Blood Extract I wrote about in a previous post. Well, you can imagine how excited I’ve been the last few days because I came across several innovative products that seem/sound really special. The first is a skin spray called AquaSpirit® created by Dr. Ed Group of Global Healing Center……

The Global Healing Center site offers some of the best products around and that’s not just my opinion. Mike Adams of Natural News gave the line a glowing review and an award for best health products, and AquaSpirit®, a skin spray created by Dr. Group, seems to be as high quality an item as everything else. It contains a combination of ingredients I haven’t found available in anything else and has gotten great reviews, has multiple benefits, and can be used by both men and women. Here’s some of the information about AquaSpirit® from the GHC site:

A Brief History of the Invention of Aquaspirit®

  • Aquaspirit® is the result of years of research into the beauty enhancing properties of all natural, specialized skin care ingredients.
  • The history of Aquaspirit® is based on a proprietary absorption and energetic process which was invented during Dr. Group’s research into chemical-free beauty and anti-aging technologies. He found that skin problems arise when the body is contaminated with toxic residue. Toxins are known to come from air, food, water, beverages, harmful organisms, stress, radiation and many other potential sources.
  • This lead Dr. Group on a journey to create the most powerful skin rejuvenation spray on the market. Aquaspirit® is designed to energize and stimulate circulation within the skin, leading to a natural regeneration process.
  • Combining specialized water, herbs, essential oils, and hydrosol substances that have been part of ancient Ayurvedic, American, and Traditional Chinese Medicine systems, Dr. Group designed a formula that stimulates the skin’s rejuvenation mechanism.
  • The revolutionary, proprietary process used to produce Aquaspirit® combines ancient and current technologies.
  • Aquaspirit® is now used by women and men worldwide as a natural, non-toxic solution to reduce the aging process.

What Does Aquaspirit® Do?

  • Helps stimulate the skin’s rejuvenation mechanism
  • Helps refreshen and purify the skin
  • Helps protect your skin in sensitive areas
  • Helps maintain the elasticity of collagen
  • Encourages the natural regeneration of new cells
  • Provides your skin with bio-available oxygen and aromatherapeutic nutrients to promote healthy, radiant skin
  • Serves as a great after-shave spray to soothe and hydrate the skin

A key ingredient in Aquaspirit® is GH3. GH3 can help aid the body in the regeneration of skin tissue. Despite being a great skin toning and refreshing remedy, very few companies use it due to high costs.

Ingredients Found in Aquaspirit®

  • Silver Fuzion®
Angstrom colloid silver bonded to fulvic acid; penetrates deep into skin to prevent clogged pores and bacteria growth.
  • Wellness Water®  The ingredients in Wellness Water have been specifically formulated to be extremely efficiently absorbable by the cells of the body. Wellness Water is distinctively different from other nutritional supplements which create waste due to low absorbability by the body’s cells. Wellness Water is an exclusive formula that supports the body at the cellular level, providing necessary building blocks to enhance personal health.
  • Organic Rose Water Distillate
Distilled from organic rose petals in India, rose water helps hydrate, tone and stimulate the skin, improving circulation. Rose water controls and balances natural oil production, making it useful for all skin types. It also has antibacterial properties to help fight acne and all skin conditions.
  • Organic Cold Pressed 18x Pure Whole Leaf Aloe Vera
Cold-pressed, whole leaf food-grade concentrate yielded from the most advanced processing techniques available. We offer a guaranteed MPS (Mucopolysaccharide) potency in an 18x concentrate.
  • GH3
GH3 can help aid the body in the regeneration of the skin tissue. Despite being an effective anti-aging remedy, few companies include GH3 due to high costs. Aquaspirit® includes GH3 because it is designed to provide you with the most advanced technology available to help you look younger and protect your face from signs of age!
  • Crystal Energy™
Flanagan Microclusters are powerful, but tiny, mineral clusters that energize the skin’s natural softness, glow, and youthful appearance. Flanagan Microclusters are about 5 nanometers (billionths of a meter) in diameter. Because of their incredibly small size, they have an enormous surface area, about 240,000 square feet per ounce. Nanocolloids are tiny particles which will suspend in water because of their electrical charge. Microcluster minerals are unique in that they have a very high electrical charge (zeta potential) and are small enough to be easily utilized. The charge on ordinary colloidal minerals is not very high or very stable, so it has little or no effect on the structure of water. Making this a one and only additive to skin care products.
  • Organic Jasmine Sambac
Used for dry, irritated, sensitive or mature skin and has a calming, relaxing, and restoring quality.

Here’s what just one customer had to say…….

5 out of 5 starsGlorious, Refreshing, Cooling, Soothing, and the Fragrance…..“Ah!!!!! The fine, cooling mist and light fragrance of Jasmine sambac make this unique product one of my absolute favorites. I keep it refrigerated, grab it after I shower or soak in the tub, then lightly mist my face and body. It is an amazing experience! Additionally, I spritz this on my face after outdoor activity or as a finishing touch to my at-home facial. It cools and refreshes my skin in seconds, leaving behind a delicate hint of Jasmine sambac. A fine mist applied after light make-up also provides a great finish whenever I want a lovely, subtle glow for a perfect, “no make-up” look. I have very sensitive, combination oily/dry skin. This product does a wonderful job balancing my complexion. No doubt about it, for me, Aqua Spirit is an exquisitely calming, refreshing, soothing, and healing product. I’d love to buy more, if only you guys could keep it in stock!!!!” ~ Donna

And if you’re looking for more exciting news in skin care options, check out these Dr. Wheatgrass products, another find of mine in the last few days…..

Also, check out some of GHC’s other great products, such as Oxy-Powder®, Detoxadine®, and one of my very favorites….O2-Zap®. This is one of the items Mike Adams at Natural News couldn’t say enough good things about and I believe no first aid/skin care kit should be without it. FYI, all GHC products come with a money back guarantee and free return shipping. That’s how much they believe in what they offer. I just ordered the Aquaspirit and Dr. Wheatgrass Recovery Spray myself.

Dragon’s Blood: Scary Sounding, Amazing Stuff!

Up until a few days ago I don’t think I’d even heard of Dragon’s Blood, let alone its many uses and benefits. So I was intrigued and majorly impressed when I recently received some information written by Matt Monarch at Raw Food World. As I was reading about all the things Dragon’s Blood can do and help with, my first thought was “Holy cow, why haven’t I heard about this before?!” My second thought was “OMG, this sounds too good to be true,” but the Raw Food World website provides numerous links to over 50 clinical studies that back up the benefits of Dragon’s Blood for wound and fracture healing, as well as stopping bleeding. It’s also analgesic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-tumor/cancer, and can be used for radiation protection, neuro-degenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, Huntington’s), diabetes, osteoporosis, rheumatism, hemorrhoids, pulmonary fibrosis, stomach and intestinal ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, vascular issues, herpes, influenza, respiratory problems, and boosting the immune system. Now do you see why I thought “OMG?!”

*New Product* Dragon’s Blood – Backed by Over 50 Clinical Studies!SANGRE DE DRAGON

Dragon’s Blood, also known as Sangre de Dragon, comes from the Croton Uechleri trees found in the Amazon Rainforest of South America. The flowers found high in the trees’ branches resemble a dragon’s head, thus the interesting name for its wild-crafted resin. The blood-like red sap is rich in taspine, an alkaloid known for its tissue and skin regeneration properties, that can quickly stop bleeding and heal wounds. And the high percentage of proanthocyanidins, which are also found in grapefruit seeds, make Dragon’s Blood one of the most potent antioxidants on the planet.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here is just some of what Matt Monarch wrote in his article….

  • Dragon’s Blood is used extensively in native pharmacopoeia to also treat many other skin disorders and conditions, such as herpes, fungal issues, skin cancer melanoma, hemorrhoids, and more
  • Dragon’s Blood may be able to help with receding gums and dental health (Matt says “While I found no clinical studies related to dental health and Dragon’s Blood, I did find an Ayurvedic website that has countless testimonials, which can be found at the link here. It states, “It is incredibly astringent, so it pulls the gums tighter around your teeth. It stops bleeding, and encourages regeneration of tissue.” I tried this and I could feel the astringent effect immediately around my gums. If you go to that website and look at the testimonials, you will see numerous people and animals who healed their gum and teeth issues where intense dentistry work would have otherwise been needed. For dental use on my gums, I like to take a few drops of Dragon’s Blood straight into my mouth and swirl it for a few minutes, then I spit it out without using any water to rinse, so that the astringent action stays working for as long as possible. I just have to spit out many times, instead of rinsing away with water.)
  • Dragon’s Blood is the number one item I travel with, because as shown in clinical studies, it has the potential to treat insect bites, arrest diarrhea, and protect the body and brain from radiation
  • Effective constituents of Dragon’s Blood were found to be potential candidate therapeutic agents for neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, ALS, Huntington’s, and Parkinson’s
  • Clinical studies show how Dragon’s Blood can be useful in helping with diabetes, osteoporosis, healing fractures and other traumatic injuries
  • In clinical studies, Dragon’s Blood showed the potential to be anti-tumor and anti-cancer, inhibit hepatitis A and B viruses, have potent activity against isolates and laboratory strains of respiratory syncytial virus, influenza A virus, and parainfluenza virus, reduce pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the lungs), boost the immune system, have anti-tumoral effects on human colon cancer cells, alleviate pain associated with gastrointestinal and other related disorders, reduce acid reflux, treat rheumatism, help heal stomach and intestinal ulcers, reduce inflammation, act as an antioxidant with free radical scavenging capacity, and act as a food preservative due to its inhibitory activity against various food borne pathogens
  • Dragon’s Blood seems to be one of the best all-round treatments available for blood; in Chinese medicine, Dragon’s Blood is commonly prescribed to invigorate blood circulation for the treatment of traumatic injuries, blood stasis and pain; it can reduce the formation of blood clots and has been shown to promote blood circulation, alleviate inflammation, stop bleeding and may be beneficial for arterial and vascular diseases.
  • When used externally, clinical studies show that Dragon’s Blood has the potential to heal wounds faster, stop bleeding, remove pain, promote skin repair, and act as an antiseptic, because it is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-spasmodic and anti-tumor.

It’s crazy how Dragon’s Blood works for external use!

To use Dragon’s Blood externally, you put a bunch of drops onto the palm of your hand. Then you take the pointer finger from your other hand and keep rubbing the liquid in a circle until it turns into a silky paste. You can then scoop that paste up with the same pointer finger and smooth it over your wound. The Dragon’s Blood will stiffen up on the wound and act as a natural band-aid!… At the same time, the Dragon’s Blood also cleans the wound by killing bacteria, microbes and other junk with its antiseptic properties, helps take the pain away, helps the wound heal faster, helps lower inflammation and stops the bleeding. At the clinical study here, it states, “The beneficial effect of Dragon’s Blood on wound healing was confirmed. Dragon’s Blood stimulated contraction of the wound, formation of a crust, formation of new collagen, and regeneration of the epithelial layer.” At the clinical study here, it states, ‘The group treated with RDEE (Dragon’s Blood) showed significantly better wound contraction and better skin-breaking strength as compared with the control group. The present study provided a scientific rationale for the traditional use of RD in the management of wounds.” USDA economic botanist Dr. James Duke says, “Dragon’s blood was shown to speed healing four times faster”.

Matt’s Raw Food World article also includes links to over 50 clinical studies that backup all the uses and benefits mentioned. I also found a number of anecdotes that speak to the amazing power of Dragon’s Blood on the The Whole World Botanical site. Here is just one:

A testimonial from a Chilean woman in her 60’s who is a high altitude trekker confirms clinical studies of the benefits of Dragon’s Blood for pre-cancerous and even cancer lesions. She used external applications twice a day on the cancerous lesion she had on the top of her finger and had remarkable results. In just two weeks the lesion was healed and since then she has used Dragon’s Blood for pre-cancerous sensitive spots on her face with great results in a week.—Whole World Botanical

The site also mentions the sap being used to quickly heal an infected spider bite in 3 days, as well as being used as a great rinse for bleeding gums and abscessed teeth. After brushing and flossing, swishing with a few drops of DB mixed in high quality warm water, a little Himalayan salt and Camu vitamin C can apparently do wonders to maintain dental health.

Dragon’s Blood is also a winner when it comes to beauty care. Supposedly a few drops applied directly to the skin reduces infection and swelling due to rashes or acne, can minimize scarring and lighten sun spots, and will even shrink and lighten dark moles and skin tags. It will also reduce the itching of eczema and psoriasis. And using it internally and externally may help with nail fungus (a word of caution—it sounds like if you use Dragon’s Blood internally that you also need to use a good probiotic or fermented foods to keep your gut flora at a healthy level, since, as an anti-bacterial agent, DB can kill the good, as well as the bad bacteria).

And if you have pets, then you’ll want to have some Dragon’s Blood around to use on your animals. Whole World Botanicals mentions it being used to heal pets’ cuts and scrapes, plus ease the pain and swelling of insect bites from spiders, red ants and even scorpion and bee stings. It also mentions where it was used to heal a cat’s infected gums, prevent infection from porcupine quills in a dog’s snout, and heal deep lacerations in a horse.

After reading all this, I was more than ready to give Dragon’s Blood a try, so I was happy to learn that Raw Food World is offering it as one of its ‘at-cost’ specials right now. Apparently the price of a bottle of 100% Raw Croton Lechleri Sap/Dragon’s Blood is normally $14.95 (I was pleasantly surprised, considering all it is capable of doing!), BUT you can get it for $10.47 (1 to 2 bottles) or for $9.42 (3 bottles or more). This special price is good until Tuesday, September 30th 2014 (midnight PST).

I like to spend my money with companies that are conscientious and support local communities and indigenous cultures that have been the caretakers and guardians of rain forest plants. So I was glad to learn that RFW is in direct contact with harvesting families in the Peruvian Amazon where their DB extract is sourced. This allows them to get 100% raw and fresh “Sangre de Grado” crude extract that has not been through any physical or chemical treatment like other products you may see on the market today. This ensures that the phyto-chemical and other properties are freshly preserved, so you can receive all of the benefits of this amazing plant sap. It also supports the local economy and environment and ensures no tree logging is performed on these trees, as the latex extraction is made by small incisions in the bark in the traditional manner.

Anyway, I’ve ordered 3 bottles and can’t wait to give DB a try. I also ordered some Siberian Pine Nut Flakes, a new product at RFW that is supposedly Matt’s favorite new superfood, and D3 patches, so I’m looking forward to trying some new things. If you are new to RFW, they are a great source for raw, organic superfoods and exotic gourmet treats. One of the things I usually buy is Shaman Shack Fermented Sea Clear, a raw, enzyme-rich, probiotic cleansing superfood that rejuvenates, alkalizes and supports healthy intestinal flora. It’s made with 100% organic, non-GMO, non-pasteurized miso, kelp, chlorella, raw apple cider vinegar, turmeric and black pepper.

Just add to water for a nourishing broth or use as a spread on crackers, or as a dip for veggies. The first time I bought it I got it because it was supposed to help with heavy metals and radiation (it’s based on the recipe used in Japan to clear radiation in people after Hiroshima), but it looked so unappetizing I put off trying it for a month. Once I got up the courage to taste it, I realized I loved using it as a warming broth (tastes like a snappy, peppery miso) in the morning, an afternoon pick-me-up, or when I’m not feeling well and need something really nourishing, but light on my system. Love it!

Suggested Use for Dragon’s Blood:

Internal: One to three times a day, take 1-3 drops in water.

External: Put 5-20 drops in hand, rub with fingers until liquid thickens into paste. Apply to wounds, or rub into skin to cleanse and tighten pores.

Dental: Use 5 to 10 drops in a little water as a mouthwash or place directly on toothbrush for natural toothpaste.

Put 5-8 drops directly in mouth and swish for 3-5 minutes for mouth ulcers and gum health.

Here are a couple of recent testimonials RFW has received from new users of the Dragon’s Blood:

“Wanted to let you know that I applied it to my spider veins, a condition chronic to my family because we are alcoholics by gene, and the area started to pulsate. I think if I apply it for 3 months I can alleviate the conditions. I used it on my face and it definitely plumps.”

“We have a friend over who I told to use Dragon’s Blood.  He has colitis and get’s mouth sores a lot.  His dad is a dentist and he gets a lot of prescription formulas from his father but they taste bad and take a lot of time to work.  He used the Dragon’s Blood and it immediately healed his mouth sores.  He is drinking water with Dragon’s Blood and he’s doing Dragon’s Blood enemas for colitis.  We are awaiting the colitis results.  I wanted to let you know though that he is blown away by the product and just raved about your company and how fast it shipped!  He’s a customer for life!”

And I’m including this one from Melissa because she’s given a previous testimonial about how it’s helped with wrinkles on her face, and this talks about the routine she uses and also mentions something you need to be aware of….Dragon’s Blood will easily stain any linens, towels, etc. it comes in contact with. So be careful!

Hi 🙂 When I dip my finger into it in my hand, I activate it on my face. After using it for so long, that is how my routine has blossomed. I tried activating it in my palm first, but then it dries a bit too quickly for me. I put it on in sections of my face. It also stains clothing, so beware! My pillowcase is ruined, but I don’t care, I just switched to a darker color. It will also stain the washcloth when I rinse it off in the morning. Whooo cares!!? Not me 😀 Thanks for offering such amazing prices and the new discount! I need more and will order again! I have even tried mixing it with my moisturizer! Depends on my day… Merry Christmas!

Why Honey Is STILL The Best Antibiotic

I’ve known about honey’s many benefits and antibiotic properties for a number of years, and have but never really knew much about how it worked its magic. Thanks to this article by L. J. Devon, staff writer for Natural News, I now have a better understanding of how it does what it does and why honey makes such a great all-natural antibiotic…..

Photo: Honeybees making honey

(NaturalNews) Conventional antibiotics are overprescribed and overconsumed. They are given out like parade candy, tossed out to anyone waving their hands. 2010 data obtained by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) show that a whopping 833 antibiotic prescriptions are handed out on average per every 1,000 people.

Conventional antibiotics make users sicker in the long run

Doctors carelessly prescribe antibiotics for viral infections, which is useless since antibiotics are only effective for breaking up bacterial infections. To make matters worse, overprescription and overconsumption make future infections harder to fight, since antibiotics deplete the good bacteria in the gut.

In this medical travesty, antibiotic-resistant bacteria are rising up, adapting to the singular mode of action that the prescription antibiotics lean on. The CDC has recently identified 20 resistant strains of bacteria, thanks to reckless dependency on these prescriptions. A 2013 report by the CDC sounds the alarm, reporting that over 2 million people contract antibiotic-resistant infections each year. Conventional antibiotics are making users sicker in the long run, more vulnerable and more prone to infection.

As this disturbing trend continues, scientists are looking for simpler answers. Researchers from the Salve Regina University in Newport, Rode Island, are rediscovering the reasons why raw honey is still one of the best natural antibiotics around to this day.

Honey fights infections on multiple levels and doesn’t promote resistant bacteria

Lead author Susan M. Meschwitz, Ph.D., presented the findings at the 247th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. She reports, “The unique property of honey lies in its ability to fight infection on multiple levels, making it more difficult for bacteria to develop resistance.”

Meschwitz said that honey uses a combination of weapons including polyphenols, hydrogen peroxide and an osmotic effect. Honey is practically an ambidextrous fighter, using multiple modalities to kill bacteria.

One of those fighting methods is its osmosis effect. This effect comes from honey’s high sugar concentration. In this process, water is drawn from the bacteria cells, leaving the pathogens no option but to dehydrate and die off.

Honey breaks up bacteria by destroying its modes of communication

Honey also possesses properties that stop the formation of biofilms. These slimy biofilms are bacteria communities which harbor diseases. Honey keeps these biofilms from congregating by breaking up a bacterial communication process called quorum sensing. By breaking up this process, honey stops the bacteria from communicating and expanding their viability. Without this communication mode, the bacteria cannot release the toxins that increase their ability to cause disease.

Meschwitz said that, by disrupting quorum sensing, the virulent behavior of bacteria is weakened, “rendering the bacteria more susceptible to conventional antibiotics.”

Doctors should prescribe honey first, and antibiotics as a last resort

Honey is so powerful for destroying bacteria that it should be the first mode of treatment when treating a bacterial illness. Doctors should prescribe honey first, since it attacks bacteria from multiple angles. Prescribed antibiotics should be the “alternative” therapy, or the last resort. Honey is more powerful because it prevents the formation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Conventional antibiotics fail because they only target the essential growth processes of bacteria. This allows bacteria to build up resistance over time, while the user also destroys the good bacteria in their gut.

Honey works much differently, breaking down the bacteria’s communication processes while dehydrating the bacteria’s structures through an osmosis effect. On top of that, honey is filled with powerful antioxidants in the form of polyphenols. Meschwitz adds, “Several studies have demonstrated a correlation between the non-peroxide antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of honey and the presence of honey phenolics.”

Honey is also antiviral, antifungal and full of antioxidants

Not only is honey antibacterial, but it is antiviral and antifungal. These properties alone make it more powerful than conventional antibiotics. Honey can target undetected fungal conditions that may be at the root cause of perpetual illness.

Meschwitz said that her team of researchers has been measuring the level of antioxidant activity of honey. “We have separated and identified the various antioxidant polyphenol compounds. In our antibacterial studies, we have been testing honey’s activity against E. coliStaphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, among others.”

While many commercial brands of honey are filtered and fake, the best place to look for delicious, medicinal, and unfiltered raw honey is at local honeybee farms.

Deadly Dental Bacteria Killer: Coconut Oil Does It AGAIN!

I have probably done more posts on coconut oil than anything else, but I can’t help myself. They keep coming out with more and more ways it can serve as a great self-help health aid…..

Coconut Oil Hailed as ‘Miracle’ Dental Breakthrough,

Deadly Bacteria Killer

(from LiveFreeLiveNatural.com) Looking for an alternative to toothpastes loaded with sulfates and other toxic ingredients such as fluoride? Mainstream science has now fully recognized the ‘miracle’ powers of coconut oil to not only combat tooth decay and drastically improve overall mouth health, but also to specifically crush a yeast known as candida albicans that can lead to deadly infections. This ‘news’ likely comes as nothing more than further confirmation for many, as natural health practitioners have been recommending coconut oil for years.

The research comes from the Athlone Institute of Technology, where Ireland-based scientists examined the effects of natural and digested coconut oil on common strains of bacteria within the mouth. What they found was that not only did the coconut oil effectively inhibit a majority of the bacteria strains single-handedly, but it was also particularly harmful to candida albicans. This is important when considering the fact that an excessive amount of the yeast known as candida albicans can be brought upon by a poor diet consisting of processed foods and sugar.

Candida infection, also known as Candida overgrowth or the ‘candy disease’, can be associated with symptoms like chronic tiredness, recurring yeast infections, and digestive issues. It can also lead to a mouth infection known as thrush — a condition typically ‘treated’ using anti-fungal medications preceded by an x-ray of your esophagus. Now, researchers are highlighting how coconut oil intake can be an alternative solution with far less side effects and concerns.

In their report, the scientists state that coconut oil could be ‘an effective alternative to chemical additives’ in most dental hygiene products. This refers to the many sulfate chemicals linked to numerous conditions, added fluoride, and many others.

It is important to ensure that you purchase the right kind of high quality coconut oil when purchasing it online or from your local supermarket. An important consideration is that the scientists conducting the study may have actually used an inferior low quality coconut oil, meaning that the results may have actually been even more positive if they were to use a 100% organic, extra virgin source. As a general rule of thumb, just as with vitamins and other supplements, avoid purchasing a generic brand of non-organic coconut oil from your local chain supermarket.

Instead, look for a USDA certified organic or 100% organic label that is unrefined and cold-pressed. Personally, I would recommend *Nutiva’s coconut oil on Vitacost for a high quality source that isn’t going to be highly expensive (I have no ties to either company).  As a side note, coconut oil is also great to store as a preparedness food as it has a very long shelf life and is packed full of nutrients.

*I was reading an article the other day by Mike Adams of Natural News about how Nutiva’s products are some of the highest quality around, and he’s one of the most health-conscious people I know, so I figure he knows what he’s talking about. See below for tips on shopping at Vitacost.

Probiotics: The Good-For-You Bacteria

If you aren’t familiar with friendly flora or probiotics (good-for-you bacteria) then learning about the part they play in helping you regain and/or maintain your health could be a big piece of the puzzle you have been missing. Probiotics support and benefit the body in so many ways, plus when they are out of balance or in short supply in your system, all sorts of havoc and disease can result, so read on to find out more about these very small, but important,  microorganisms….

Knowing Your Friendly Bacteria Healing Gut

Probiotics: The Good-For-You Bacteria

The intestinal tract is home to literally trillions of bacteria comprising hundreds of beneficial species—these so called “friendly” microorganisms are called probiotics, meaning “for life.” They provide a variety of benefits to us, including keeping harmful, pathogenic species in check, and maintaining balance in the intestinal terrain. They are also essential to nutrient assimilation, producing many important enzymes, and increasing the bio-availability of vitamins, particularly the Bs and K, fatty acids, lactase (which helps in the digestion of milk products), and calcium. Probiotics work to regulate hormones, de-activate various cancer-causing compounds, strengthen the immune system, neutralize toxins, normalize bowel movements, control cholesterol, counter allergies and skin problems, and prevent yeast and fungal infections. Wow! No wonder their name means “for life!”

When the intestine contains the correct balance of “good” and “bad” bacteria, it is described as being in a state of symbiosis. Alternately, dysbiosis (“dys-symbiosis”) occurs when this balance is upset and absorption and assimilation of nutrients is impaired. This imbalance can result from a deficiency of good bacteria or an overgrowth of harmful organisms. In either case, organisms that are not usually predominant in the intestines, such as unfriendly bacteria, yeast/candida, and protozoa, can actually induce dis-ease by altering nutrition patterns in the body.

Symptoms that the flora in your gastro-intestinal tract are out of balance could be bloating, belching, or a sense of fullness after meals, indigestion, diarrhea or constipation, nausea or diarrhea after taking supplements, iron deficiency, and chronic intestinal infections, including parasites and yeast. Other signs may be an “itchy” anus, weak or cracked finger nails, dilated capillaries in the check and nose, skin irritations such as rosacea, undigested food in the stool, fatigue, and skin that bruises easily.

Friendly Tummy Bugs Could Be Key To Long And Healthy Life In Elderly

Friendly “tummy bugs” could be key to a longer and healthier life

Research has overwhelmingly shown that probiotics are an essential link in maintaining or regaining health and well-being. Most healthcare practitioners recommend taking a probiotic supplement on a regular basis, and if you’re doing any kind of liver or colon cleansing you need to be sure you always replace all the friendly flora that will be flushed away during the cleanse. Also, taking birth control pills can upset the delicate balance of your inner terrain, and using prescription antibiotics unfortunately kills “the good,” as well as “the bad and the ugly” bacteria, so a probiotic supplement (taken away from the prescription or at the end of the dosing period) should always be used in those cases, as well.

There are numerous strains and brands of probiotics available these days, and some also contain soil-based organisms (SBOs). Until modern times there was no need to artificially introduce these SBOs, since they were a natural part of our ancestors’ diet. They were plentiful in the soil in which our forefathers grew their food and would automatically be ingested when carrots and other produce were consumed right out of the ground. But now, with the emphasis on food hygiene and the nutrient-depleted soil used for most farming, many health practitioners are becoming convinced it’s important to somehow add these SBOs back into our diet.

SBOs not only help us assimilate nutrients from our food, but also to eliminate putrefying matter and pathogenic organisms so that the immune system is relieved and allowed to work more efficiently. They also stimulate the body to produce large reservoirs of non-specific antibodies, which the immune system can then use to overcome any number of dis-eases. SBOs positively influence the body’s own production of alpha-interferon, a key regulator of our immune response; they also stimulate the production of lactoferrin, an iron-building protein that helps make sure the iron we absorb from food is bio-available and transferred to wherever it’s needed in the body.

Garden of Life’s Primal Defense™, was the first probiotic on the market to include SBOs, as well as other powerful health-inducing ingredients. It was the first formula I started taking and is still considered one of the premier probiotics today. You can get  Garden of Life’s Primal Defense™ and Nutrition Now’s PB-8, one of the most popular products on the market, on-line (and at discount prices) at Vitacost and iHerb.com, as well as a number of other places. I actually make a point of changing between several brands periodically because some formulas offer strains others don’t, and different strains impart different benefits. I also don’t want my system to get so acclimated to one formula that it possibly loses some of its effectiveness.

If you are new to Vitacost, shop through the link on my webpage, and spend a certain amount (I believe it’s $25), you will get a $10 coupon to use. They are also finding that probiotics can be a big help with food allergies:

One such study involves researchers in Finland who discovered that probiotics prevent permeability defects of the intestine, which reduces the absorption of allergy-causing antigens in the digestive tract. Infants who exhibited an allergy to cow’s milk with atopic eczema were given whey formula either with or without the addition of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG probiotic. The team measured intestinal inflammation before and after the dietary intervention. At the end of the 1-month study, those who received the probiotic improved substantially, leading the researchers to this conclusion: “These results suggest that probiotic bacteria may promote endogenous barrier mechanisms in patients with atopic dermatitis and food allergy, and by alleviating intestinal inflammation, may act as a useful tool in the treatment of food allergy.”

And here’s an interesting and fascinating article about how they are finding a correlation between the specific types of bacteria individuals have in their gut and how their brains function:

And speaking of specific types of bacteria, did you know that saccharomyces boulardii is especially good for helping with alleviating food poisoning, especially when you take it when you suspect you’ve eaten something bad or first start to feel yucky? This strain of bacteria is specific to the stomach so it can often nip things in the bud when taken in time.

But don’t forget that supplements aren’t the only way to make sure your body has plenty of friendly flora to work with. Naturally fermented foods, such as miso, tempeh, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kombucha, are all great ways to insure your system is well-supplied with probiotics. In fact, most of the reading and research I’ve done lately says that this is really the way to go when it comes to good bacteria, because a serving of one of these foods has many more times the good bacteria than what you would get in a supplement. What’s nice is there are so many first-rate fermented foods out there these days. I love some of the kombucha flavors available now, and the local health food store carries a line of sauerkraut (WildBrine™) that includes a red beet/red cabbage version that has a hint of pear for an antioxidant-rich kraut that is my new favorite.

If you’d like to know more about fermented foods, and possibly even how to make your own, check out Cultures For Health. They have all the information and starters you will need, plus offer several free e-books and lots of recipes.

Also, here’s a fascinating read that contains information about a variety of things, including using fermented foods to up your supply of good bacteria, a possible link between lack of probiotics and rheumatoid arthritis, and statements such as these:

The trillions of bacteria cohabiting inside you are not restricted to your intestinal tract. They also colonize your skin—both on the outside and deeper beneath the surface layers—your mouth, saliva and more.

For example, six different tribes of beneficial bacteria have been found to reside in the crook of your elbow, where they moisturize your skin by processing raw fats…..

According to an article published this past June in the journal Biological Psychiatry,12 the authors suggest that even severe and chronic mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), might be eliminated through the use of certain probiotics.

Bacteria have also been identified as major players in the distribution of your body fat, metabolism, and the regulation of your mood and memory. Mounting research actually shows that problems in your gut can directly impact your mental health, leading to issues like anxiety and depression. They also help educate your immune cells—telling them which pathogens to fight off and which ones to leave alone.

Apple Cider Vinegar: No Home Should Be Without It!

Raw apple cider vinegar, along with coconut oil, diatomaceous earth, and a few other things, ranks high on my list of simple, all-natural, easy to use and inexpensive health aids. It has so many uses and benefits (just see the chart below!) that no pantry or medicine cabinet should be without a bottle, and if you don’t believe me, just read on….

Apple Cider Vinegar

Vinegar has a long and illustrious history. It’s been traced to Egyptian urns as far back as 3000 B.C., and even Hippocrates, the father of medicine, used it to treat his patients. The Babylonians used vinegar as a condiment and preservative, while Julius Caesar’s army used it in a tonic to stay healthy and ward off disease. The Greeks and Romans kept vessels filled with vinegar for healing and flavoring, and in Biblical times it was used as an antiseptic and healing agent—it’s even mentioned in the Bible. Christopher Columbus and his crew brought along barrels of vinegar to prevent scurvy on their trip to discover America. And for centuries the feared Samurai warriors in Japan drank it for strength and power.

But the vinegar that appears on most dinner tables today is a far cry from what our ancestors used for staying healthy. Just as salt has been refined and “purified” over the years to such an extent that it no longer possesses any of its health-giving components, the same is true of vinegar. In fact, the most popular vinegar in supermarkets today is actually a clear, white version created by a food chemist from coal tar!! And because uninformed consumers often buy with their eyes, i. e. what “looks best,” most people purchase this poor imitation of the real thing, or one of the distilled vinegars which have no real nutritional value.

People buying with their eyes don’t know what they’re missing, because natural (un-distilled), organic, raw apple cider vinegar (ACV) is one of nature’s most perfect foods. And health pioneers Paul and Patricia Bragg made it part of their life’s work to re-educate the public about its many values. One of the main reasons raw, unpasteurized ACV is so good for you is that it contains cobweb-like substances called “the mother,” which can, unfortunately, make the mixture look not only cloudy, but downright unappetizing to people with its floating “globs of brown stuff” at the bottom. Some people might even mistakenly think that it’s a sign the vinegar has “gone bad,” when actually just the opposite is true. Distilling not only destroys “the mother” and powerful enzymes, but also removes life-giving minerals like potassium, silicon, and trace elements. The distillation process also destroys the natural malic and tartaric acids, which are important in fighting body toxins and inhibiting unfriendly bacteria. So distilled vinegars are basically just flavoring agents and nothing more.

But fortunately, because of the Braggs and other natural health practitioners, many people are re-discovering the benefits of raw, organic ACV, which are many! It helps:

  • promote youthful skin and a healthy body
  • remove artery plaque and body toxins
  • fight germs, viruses, bacteria and mold naturally
  • retard the aging process in humans, pets and farm animals
  • regulate calcium metabolism
  • keep blood the right consistency
  • regulate menstruation and relieve PMS and UTIs
  • normalize urine pH, relieving the frequent urge to urinate
  • digestion, assimilation and balance pH
  • relieve sore throats, laryngitis and throat tickles, and cleans out throat and gum toxins
  • detox the body so sinus, asthma and flu sufferers can breathe easier and more normally
  • banish acne and athlete’s foot, and soothe burns and sunburns
  • treat itchy scalp, baldness, dry hair, dandruff, rashes, and shingles
  • fight arthritis and remove crystals and toxins from joints, tissues, organs and the entire body
  • control and normalize body weight

Wow! That’s quite a list for something so inexpensive and simple to use! I also read recently where ACV can be used to treat Lyme Disease, something that showed up early on when I first started having some health tests done. The protocol mentioned was to use 1 to 3 tsps. of the vinegar with 8 oz. of water and drink the mixture 3 times a day, before meals. You can use room temperature or hot water, and add a little honey to “soften” the taste. ACV can also be used as a mouthwash, to help relieve constipation, improve memory, alleviate “brain fog,” and much more.

Many famous people and health practitioners make a habit of drinking a “tonic” of 1-2 tsps.  ACV with 1-2 tsps. honey in 8 oz. of *high quality water, several times a day. Paul Wenner, the creator of Gardenburger, used it as part of his asthma cure, and Gabriel Cousens, MD, author of Conscious Eating and Spiritual Nutrition, has said that “The use of Bragg’s organic apple cider vinegar is a wonderful health aid, the #1 food I recommend in helping to maintain the body’s vital acid-alkaline balance.”

* TIP: If you drink distilled water  over a period of time (something I don’t recommend doing), it can leach vital nutrients from your system. Adding some ACV to it can help rectify the situation.

And for those of you out there interested in shedding some pounds, you will be happy to know that ACV helps with that, as well. Since it naturally supports your body in getting rid of excess fluids, and works to speed up a slow metabolism and “curb” your appetite, you’ll have yet one more reason for adding ACV to your daily health regimen. This “miracle in a bottle” also makes a great first aid treatment on burns of any kind. Just splash some on the affected area to help stop the pain and also prevent scarring and infection.

Here’s an excerpt from an article by nutritionist, herbologist and homeopathic practitioner John Summerly of Prevent Disease that mentions some of the conditions ACV can treat and the science that backs that up….

Apple cider vinegar is purported to treat numerous diseases, health conditions, and annoyances. To name a few, it kills head lice, reverses aging, eases digestion, prevents flu, prevents acne, lowers blood pressure, reduces inflammation, kills fungus, regulate pH balance, dissolves kidney stones and helps relieve allergies, migraines, asthma, nausea, heart burn and wash toxins from the body. Can it really do all these things? You bet it can and more! But what does science say?

  • DiabetesThe effect of apple cider vinegar on blood sugar levels is perhaps the best researched and the most promising of ACV’s health benefits. Several studies have found that vinegar may help lower glucose levels. For instance, a study (White, A. Diabetes Care, November 2007) of 11 people with type 2 diabetes found that taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed lowered glucose levels in the morning by 4%-6%. In another study from Arizona State University, subjects took a drink of 20 grams of ACV and 40 grams of water. Those with insulin resistance who drank the vinegar had 34% lower postprandial (after-meal) glucose compared to controls. Vinegar may be the most cost-effective medicine in history, but most people with diabetes still aren’t taking it.
  • High CholesterolA 2006 study reported in Medscape General Medicine, showed evidence that ACV could lower cholesterol. In a study published in a foreign medical journal, scientists found an apple cider vinegar-enhanced diet may increase in HDL (good cholesterol), and reduce levels of triglycerides. Research in rats suggests that apple-cider vinegar can help control triglycerides and cholesterol (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, June 22, 2011).
  • Blood Pressure and Heart Health. Another study in rats found that vinegar could lower high blood pressure. A large observational study also found that people who ate oil and vinegar dressing on salads five to six times a week had lower rates of heart disease than people who didn’t. Researchers have suggested that ‘this reduction in blood pressure may be caused by the significant reduction in renin activity and the subsequent decrease in angiotensin II’. Potassium in the vinegar ‘balances sodium levels in the body, which aids in maintaining blood pressure within healthy limits’ and ‘apple cider vinegar also contains magnesium, a mineral that works to relax blood vessel walls and thus lower high blood pressure’.
  • CancerA few laboratory studies have found that vinegar may be able to kill cancer cells or slow their growth. One study found that eating vinegar was associated with a decreased risk of esophageal cancer. Another associated it with a decreased risk of bladder cancer. In recent trials, pectin, which can be found in ACV, has shown promise in helping to slow the growth of cancerous cells within the prostate (http://www.news-medical.net/news/20100702/Modified-Citrus-Pectin-holds-promise-against-prostate-cancer.aspx). In addition, apple cider vinegar’s acidity aids in detoxifying and cleansing the digestive tract and cleaning out the colon, which supports the health of the prostate as well.
  • Weight LossFor thousands of years, vinegar has been used for weight loss. White vinegar (and perhaps other types) might help people feel full. A study (Ostman, E. European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2005) of 12 people found that those who ate a piece of bread along with small amounts of vinegar felt fuller and more satisfied than those who just ate the bread. A 2009 study on mice showed that consuming acetic acid (the active component in ACV) up-regulates the expression of genes for fatty acid oxidation enzymes in the liver, causing suppression in body fat accumulation. In a double-blind experiment, obese Japanese were assigned to three different groups based on similar body weights, body mass indexes (BMI), and waist circumference. Each group drank a 500 ml drink containing either 30ml, 15ml, or 0ml of vinegar daily for 12 weeks. Those in the 30ml and 15ml groups had lower BMI, visceral fat area, waist circumference, serum triglyceride, and body weight to the control group of 0ml. The 12-week weight losses were modest: 1.2kg in the 15ml group and 1.7kg in the 30ml group. These two groups consumed a similar number of calories to the control group and also performed a similar amount of exercise, so the effect is not likely to have been due to an impact on appetite or other lifestyle changes. It was concluded that consumption of vinegar might reduce obesity

AND ACV can clean almost anything in your house. Just add liquid castile soap, high quality  water, and essential oil (optional) and you have an environmentally-friendly mixture for cleaning floors, the bathroom, kitchen, etc. ACV can also be used as a fabric softener and in the wash cycle to prevent fabrics from fading. Try vinegar and water as a non-toxic way to clean windows, but be sure to use a micro fabric cloth for wiping, instead of newspaper, which can contain toxic dyes. And you can help keep your drains unclogged by sprinkling some baking soda down them, followed by ACV. Let the mixture bubble for 15 min., then rinse with hot water. Baking soda and ACV also make a wonderful spa-like bath for soaking away aches and pains and detoxing the body. It’s almost hard to believe that something so simple and inexpensive could have so many benefits and uses! No home should be without it!

Here are some of the various uses for ACV that Summerly listed in his article:

HairIt is widely known that apple cider vinegar can be used as a rinse for your hair after shampooing to add healthy body and shine. Recycle an old shampoo bottle and fill it with 1/2 a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a cup of cold water. Pour through your hair after shampooing several times a week.

Face: Did you know that apple cider vinegar can help regulate the pH of your skin? Dilute apple cider vinegar with two parts water, and spread the concoction over your face with a cotton ball as a toner. You can do this at night after washing, and in the morning before you apply your moisturizer. You can also dab apple cider vinegar directly onto age spots and leave them on overnight to lighten their color.

Hands and FeetAre your hands and feet feeling tired and swollen after a long day? Treat yourself to a personal spa massage by rubbing apple cider vinegar onto them.

Sunburn: Suffering from a bad sunburn? Add a cup of apple cider vinegar to your bath and soak for 10 minutes.

TeethDid you know that apple cider vinegar can help remove stains from teeth? Rub teeth directly with apple cider vinegar and rinse out. PERSONAL NOTE: I would be careful with this one since ACV is acidic and could damage tooth enamel. In fact, I would recommend that whenever you drink or use ACV in the mouth that you always rinse immediately with pure water.

AftershaveFill a bottle with equal parts apple cider vinegar and water and shake to blend.

Detox: Add 2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a 1 or 2 liter filtered water bottle. Drink this throughout the day to cleanse your body and kidneys all day long.

Drain CleanerBaking soda and apple cider vinegar is an amazing bubbly combination that has many uses. As a drain cleaner, sprinkle baking soda down the drain, then add apple cider vinegar and let it bubble for 15 minutes, then rinse with hot water. This is a safer alternative to dangerous drain cleaners.

Digestion: A small amount of apple cider vinegar, taken just prior to a meal, will stimulate production of digestive juices.

DandruffA home remedy for dandruff is to mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with 1/4 cup water. The vinegar solution is thought to restore the restore the pH balance of the scalp and discourage the overgrowth of malassezia furfur, the yeast-like fungus thought to trigger dandruff.

Mosquito and Insect BitesUsing as little as 1/4 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar will relieve insect bites instantly.

Stomach AchesMix 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar with 12 ounces of warm water, and drink in the morning on empty stomach. Feel free to add a little honey or maple syrup.

Alkaline Acid BalanceSome alternative practitioners recommend using apple cider vinegar to restore alkaline acid balance. The theory behind the alkaline diet is that our blood is slightly alkaline (with a normal pH level of between 7.35 and 7.45) and that our diet should reflect this pH level. Proponents of the alkaline-acid theory believe that a diet high in acid-producing foods leads to lack of energy, excessive mucous production, infections, anxiety, irritability, headache, sore throat, nasal and sinus congestion, allergic reactions, and increased risk of conditions such as arthritis and gout.

Poison Ivy:  Kill poison ivy without using Roundup with white vinegar, though it might take a few days.  Fill your garden sprayer with straight, undiluted white vinegar and take aim at the poison ivy leaves and crowns. Try not to soak the ground, since it will result in inhospitable acidity in the soil. If you want, you can use calcitic lime to neutralize any vinegar in the soil afterwards. Read more at http://www.realfarmacy.com/7-ways-to-kill-poison-ivy-without-using-roundup/#DofldpR73pBsJ43U.99

And here’s a post that mentions a number of ways to use ACV around the house….including getting rid of fruit flies!

And this site is a great resource for information on ACV, including a routine to help with hair loss:

Want to add more ACV to your daily routine?  Start with this all-purpose health drink that helps detox and fortify the body:

Apple cider vinegar is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic that fights germs and bacteria inside and outside the body. It’s been known to help with PMS and menstrual cramps, morning sickness, skin problems, chronic fatigue and more. It’s also a good heartburn or upset stomach remedy. Many people think that too much acid is what causes heartburn, but it actually occurs when there isn’t enough of the right kind of acid to digest food properly. Most over-the-counter antacids appear to help, but the relief is usually temporary and they leave the stomach more alkaline, which ends up aggravating the situation. Apple cider vinegar is rich in acetic and malic acids that increase the acidity of digestive fluids, causing them to flow faster, which results in improved digestion and assimilation.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) also contains potassium, which keeps tissues healthy, soft and pliable, and helps eliminate toxins by putting them in solution so that they can be carried out of the body. Potassium is also like a detergent for the arteries and helps thin and cleanse the blood, so this protocol works to relieve heart ailments and high blood pressure. And the natural acids and enzymes in the drink help with rheumatism, arthritis, bone pain and stiff joints, when taken 3 or 4 times a day over several months. Plus, using this drink helps control and normalize weight, can relieve a sore throat, promotes a youthful body and healthy skin, relaxes the nervous system, alleviates stress, and promotes deep sleep when taken before bedtime. Pretty good for something so simple and easy to prepare!

The recipe for this healing, cleansing tonic is as follows:

  • 8 oz. high quality water (I recommend using structured water), warm enough to melt the honey
  • 1 to 2 tsp. *raw apple cider vinegar, preferably organic
  • 1 to 2 tsp. **honey, preferably raw and organic

Mix the vinegar with the honey and, depending on the dis-eases you want to address, drink up to 4 times during the day, or at night before going to bed. The amount of either ingredient can be adjusted for comfort and taste. When apple cider vinegar and honey combine, the chemical formula of each changes. So if you have indigestion or diabetes and are concerned about the acid content of the vinegar or the sugar content of the honey, you may find that the two working together do not produce negative results. A variation of this routine, where you take 2 TBS. of ACV in 8 oz. of water at bedtime, has been shown to moderate waking glucose concentrations in adults with well-controlled Type 2 Diabetes.

*Bragg’s makes a raw, unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar; Dynamic Health, Jarrow and Spectrum are other possible brands to try.

**Honey comes from flowers (by way of bees, of course!) and has a very light energy; try to use a honey made from flowers known to provide support for the heart and lungs, if possible, and that’s harvested locally—that way it will help the body build up immunity to allergens common to your particular area of the country. Or, Y. S. Organic Bee Farm honey is a great honey and what I normally use. You can also try substituting coconut sugar (available from Raw Food World and elsewhere), dried sugar cane juice (Sucanat), which is high in potassium, for the honey, and, for variety’s sake, occasionally use mint tea in place of the water.

FYI, you can get raw, unpastuerized ACV at discount prices at Vitacost and iHerb, two of my favorite on-line places to shop.  And for more information about ACV and ways to incorporate it into your daily health routine, check out the book by Paul C. and Patricia Bragg titled Apple Cider Vinegar: Miracle Health System.

And to end on, an interesting article about how they are finding that vinegar, at certain concentrations, has no problem killing tuberculosis and other resistant mycobacteria:

The All-Important pH Factor

It wasn’t until I was dealing with a variety of health issues a number of years ago that I became familiar with what the pH factor even was, let alone start to understand its importance to overall health. It’s something I think everyone should be aware of and I wish more individuals in the mainstream medical/health community understood its importance so they could/would make sure their patients were better informed.

(Reference chart from Body Mind Green)

The pH Factor

PH (potential of Hydrogen) is the measure of acidity or alkalinity of a solution. On the pH scale, 7.0 is considered neutral, while higher readings indicate increased alkalinity, and lowers ones represent increasing acidity. Your current state of health or dis-ease is directly tied to your body’s ability to maintain a proper acid/alkaline balance. One of the main things that makes it easier for parasites to gain a foothold and set up residence in your body is having a pH reading that’s out of balance on a regular basis. As Louis Pasteur said “It’s not the germs we need to worry about. It is our inner terrain.” And if anyone knew germs, he did! In fact, acidification (a low pH reading) of body fluids and tissues is linked to every known disease.  Dr. Theodore Baroody, author of Alkalize or Die, has said “The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same basis cause…too much acid tissue waste in the body.”

Normally the lungs and kidneys help keep the pH range of your body’s fluids in balance, but a diet that is unbalanced can stress body chemistry by causing extreme acidity (acidosis) or alkalinity (alkalosis). Each extreme has symptoms and predisposes a person to certain illnesses. Some symptoms of acidosis are frequent sighing, increased heartbeat, restlessness/nervousness, cold sweats, dry skin and/or mouth, hard stools, diminished urination/perspiration, fatigue, bad breath and a sour taste in the mouth. Alkalosis can manifest as muscle soreness/cramps, stiff joints, bursitis, bone spurs, edema, allergies, restlessness, discomfort after eating, and lowered resistance to bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc.

But chronic alkalosis is rare, especially in our society. A diet like that of many Americans—i.e. one that includes too much protein, fast food and processed foods, carbonated beverages, and sugar—naturally creates an overly acidic body and a virtual breeding ground for candida, parasites, infection, and other dis-eases. And the more acidic a body is, the more it holds on to heavy metals. Heavy metals, in turn, create a high oxidative stress that further acidifies the inner terrain (talk about a catch-22!). Our bodies are already naturally acidic and most of the comfort foods we learned to love as kids are acid-forming, so unless you consciously eat an alkalizing diet, it’s likely your pH level is often less than ideal.

Americans typically eat a diet that is 80% acid and 20% alkaline, when the exact opposite should be the case.  When the body becomes overly acidic, it retains water to dilute the excess acid and stores fat as protection from the portion that gets into the blood. So, an unbalanced pH inclines the body toward fat storage and weight gain, among other things. And taking medicines or supplements while your body is highly acidic is a bit like washing dishes in a sink of dirty water—even when you put in plenty of soap, you can’t get the dishes clean. But that’s not all. Medical scientists speculate that cellulite is caused by water retention, excess estrogen, and poor circulation. The acid toxins the body works to store in fat tissue could also be a factor. The body has a tendency to stick excess acids on the butt, chest, thighs and belly, so, if you’re concerned about the unflattering dimpling effect cellulite causes, you may want to pay more attention to your body’s pH level.

For those reasons and more, balancing your body’s pH should be one of your goals. It will help normalize weight, reduce food cravings, increase immune response, improve skin conditions, cholesterol levels, headaches and allergies, relieve congestion and chronic pain, such as arthritis, and add to your energy level. One of the biggest benefits comes in the form of stronger bones—that’s because a balanced pH stops excess acid from leaching calcium from the skeleton and lowering bone density. Elson M. Haas, M. D., author of The New Detox Diet, says”…I believe that pH balancing is one of the keys to the future of medicine.”

As far as foods go, generally figs have the greatest alkalizing effect and egg yolks are tops for acidifying. The only fruits that are acid-forming are cranberries, plums, and prunes; unsweetened pineapple juice (¼ – ½ cup) helps to balance pH from either direction; green teas (Bancha), umeboshi plums, and noni juice are highly alkaline. HOWEVER, I’ve noticed that in researching which foods are acid or alkaline forming, there is some variation of opinion, depending on the source you use, so you may find the foods I just mentioned ranked differently elsewhere. I have included several links toward the end of this post so you can see how foods are being ranked by different resources/individuals.

The best diet to help maintain a normal pH, and therefore healthy body, is one that avoids processed, refined foods, and puts the least amount of stress on digestion and metabolism—a diet that is centered around high quality, natural foods. A good way to give your body a quick, alkalizing boost is to make a juice with celery, carrots, beets and chard, kale or spinach. Drinking water infused with fresh lemon juice, or adding 1-2 TBS of liquid chlorophyll to a quart of water, is another easy way to alkalize the system. Also, there is a recipe that contains aloe vera and chlorophyll in the Colon Cleanse section of *A Healthier You From the Inside Out that is especially good for maintaining a healthy pH reading. However, you need to keep in mind that one of the most important things you can do doesn’t have to do with anything you put in your mouth—it has to do with how you handle stress. Can you believe that stress is probably the greatest acidifying factor there is? It has the power to neutralize the benefits of an alkaline diet with just one surge of adrenaline!

So managing stress through yoga, meditation, walks in nature, or whatever nurtures your body, is probably just as important as diet as far as maintaining alkalinity.  You may also want to check out a supplement I found out about called Suntheanine L-theanine. Apparently it’s important to get the Suntheanine type of L-theanine, since it’s the one that has been studied in clinical trials and found to help ease stress without making you drowsy; it also can improve mood, and promote better sleep. I haven’t used it yet myself, but plan to order some since a friend who works with PTSD patients says she and her clients have used it with very good results. What’s nice is it’s all-natural—a unique amino acid, derived from green tea leaves, that enhances endocrine function, stimulating some brain waves and leaving others unaffected. In these changing times it seems like a good thing to have on hand! 🙂 FYI, Vitacost carries a number of brands that offer Suntheanine L-theanine.

A list of 10 tips to ridding your body of an over-acidic state:

1. Drink plenty of pure alkaline water—alkaline water adds oxygen to your water and helps neutralize acids. There are ways you can make water more alkaline (e. g. adding lemon juice) and a variety of water filtering devices that also produce alkaline water.  Just be aware that, like anything in life, overdoing it may not be a good thing. I am starting to read more and more where certain individuals who are prominent in the alternative health community are advising against drinking alkalized water long term. For me, the way to go these days is drinking structured water instead, which has the natural pH of water, and then eat foods that are alkalizing to rise the pH. Seems like a more natural way to go about things, and that almost always is best in my opinion!

2. Eat celery before, during, or after a meal—it’s one of the most alkaline foods you can eat and is excellent for digestion.

3. Eat a green salad (sans cheese and croutons) with your meal and use organic olive oil and lemon juice for dressing.

4. Switch from cow’s milk to coconut or almond milk.

5. Avoid artificial sweeteners, such as NutraSweet, Sucralose, Apartame, and Saccharin—try no-calorie, natural sweetener stevia instead.

6. Eat grapefruit in the morning, and then wait 15 minutes before eating any carbohydrates or proteins. BTW, lemons and grapefruit are acidic, but are highly alkalizing in/to the body, which can be a little confusing to people.

7. Eliminate red meat, pork, and lamb and substitute small quantities of free-range chicken, turkey or fresh fish that is known to be low in mercury/toxins instead.

8. Reduce stress by doing daily sessions of yoga, tai chi, qi gong, meditation, etc.

9. Include green superfoods in your diet; they are nutrient-dense and infuse your body with easily absorbed vitamins, minerals, amino acids, chlorophyll, enzymes, phytonutrients and alkaline salts that help neutralize acids in the blood and tissues.

10. Minimize or avoid processed and refined foods.

Energise For Life is a great website and resource for all things alkaline, including information, recipes, products, etc. Here’s a link to their list of the 9 most alkalizing foods, which includes cucumber, avocado and ginger, all of which I’ve featured in previous posts here.
