Spirit Gate: Heart 7 Acupoint For Anxiety, Insomnia, And More

Here’s a simple, but effective self-help tip that involves using a specific acupoint called Heart 7 to nourish your heart/spirit connection, calm your emotions, relieve anxiety, soothe the worries of a troubled mind and help you get to sleep. It can also support mental clarity and put you more at ease with public speaking. Great! I love multi-purpose health aids!

Below is some info from Cindy Black, L.Ac., LMT, founder of Big Tree School of Natural Healing, who periodically offers webinars on learning to use acupoints……

(by Cindy Black) The Heart meridian is rooted internally within the heart itself. Every meridian has an internal pathway that connects with organs and areas of the body. These internal pathways provide a connection between the organs and tissues of the body. The Heart meridian has internal connections with the small intestine, lungs, throat, and eyes.

“The Heart is the sovereign of all the organs and represents the consciousness of one’s being. It is responsible for intelligence, wisdom and spiritual transformation.”

-Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine

Heart Meridian

Heart Meridian

The meridian we refer to as the “Heart Meridian” is the external aspect of the Heart meridian. The Heart meridian emerges from the interior at the center of the arm pit. This point is known as Heart 1 (HT 1), the first point of the heart meridian. The pathway of the Heart meridian is from HT 1, along the inside of the arm on the pinky side, and stretches all the way to the pinky finger (see figure above). The last point of the Heart meridian is HT 9.

Famous Heart meridian point:

Heart 7, Shen Men “Spirit Gate”

As the name implies, this point is used to soothe, nourish, and inspire the Spirit. In practical terms, HT 7 is used to calm the emotions, to relieve anxiety, and to soothe the worries of a troubled mind so that one can get some sleep.

These are big expectations for only a single point, which is why points are combined with other points and meridian massage in order to bring about the desired effect.

How to locate HT 7

Look at the palm of your hand. Now, look at the wrist wrinkles (also known as the wrist crease). HT 7 is located on the palm side of the wrist crease at the pinky end. See the picture below:

Elizabeth Gilbert On Pain And What It Can Teach Us

This is a long post, but I thought it was a very interesting read and fits in beautifully with how powerfully our thoughts and emotions influence our health and healing, or lack thereof. Very insightful and thought-provoking. I love Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat. Pray. Love.) …and even featured her presentation on the creative process in a blog post at Evolution Made Easier……

Elizabeth Gilbert's photo.

“PERHAPS I AM STRONGER THAN I THINK” — Thomas Merton

Dear Friends –

I’ve spent the last eleven days hiking in the Italian Alps.

And that is a sentence that — 15 years ago — I would never have imagined myself ever writing.

I used to have a bad knee. It started during my divorce, when every part of me was falling apart — head to toe, inside and out. But my left knee was the worst of it. I twisted it one day, and it was never the same again. I couldn’t even walk up a flight of stairs without pain. At the time I went to see a doctor about it, who said simply, “Well, that’s why they call it getting older, and not getting younger.” (Thanks, doc.)

For years, I babied my knee. I identified myself as someone whose knees were “bad”, the way certain dogs and neighborhoods are called “bad”. If I took a yoga class, and the teacher asked if anyone had any physical limitations, I dutifully raised my hand and explained that I had a bad knee. I was given special movements, and told to be extra careful. Every new doctor was told about my bad knee. My friends knew about my bad knee. I iced it and heated it and put braces on it and took tons of ibuprofen and kept my range of motion limited because of it. I visited all kinds of professionals — traditional and alternative, alike.

But my knee never stopped hurting.

Untill 5 years ago.

Now listen — before I go on here, please don’t do anything stupid to your body because of what I’m about to say, OK? I’m not a medical professional, and you must be a wise steward of your own lovely physical being.

But here is what happened to me.

One day — and it did happen suddenly, one day — about five years ago, I asked my knee what it wanted from me.

I literally spoke to it. I got very quiet, and very sleepy, and I said, “Tell me what you need from me, dear knee. I’m listening. I”ll do whatever you say. Surgery? A replacement? More gentle care? More acupunture? A change of diet? Reiki? Just give me the word.”

Then I got very quiet, and my knee told me what it wanted. I heard the answer in the depths of my mind, as clear as day. It said, “GO FASTER.”

Go faster, said my knee. Go running. Go climbing. Go dancing. Use me. Jump up and down on me. I am a KNEE. There is absolutely nothing wrong with me. I am wonderously designed, said my knee. I am not a weak point, but a strong one. I am part of your body, and I want to be used. I am not a symbol of your divorce. I am not a sign of aging. I am not a problem. Don’t baby me. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life being treated like a Victorian invalid lady who has to take to her bed because of her fainting spells. I am not weak. Stop this. Please, please, please — said my “bad” knee to me — please stop using me as an expression of your weakness, fear, and emotional fragility. Please talk to your therapist about whatever troubles are ongoing in your mind, but don’t blame for everything. Please just trust me. Please just use me as I was designed. Use me as a freaking KNEE.

The next day — hand to God — I went running for three miles and I was fine. I’ve been fine ever since.

Again — PLEASE don’t go and do anything physically stupid to yourselves because of this story. I can barely explain it myself — how suddenly my “bad” knee was no longer bad. I have never been able to speak to a body part so clearly again, and I know it seems crazy that it happened at all.

But it happened.

There was pain (remember — that was my “divorce knee”) and then I was finally ready to put the pain away, and to stop using my knee as a pain-memorial.

All I know is this — that pain is a complicated and multi-layered force. Nobody experiences pain the same way, which is why it’s so difficult to treat. Some of our pain abides in the body, and some of it abides in the mind, and some of it abides in our histories. As pain moves through us, it passes through what scientists call “amplification centers” in our beings. Our emotions are amplification centers. our fear is an amplifaction center. Our imaginations are amplification centers. Our anger, too. All of these parts of ourselves amplify the pain in our mind, and sometimes commit to that pain fully — forever.

I had a friend once who injured her back during a hard time in her life, and it didn’t recover for years. One day, a doctor finally asked her, “What was the first thing you thought, when you felt your back go out?”

My friend said, “I thought, ‘This is going to hurt me for the rest of my life”.

The doctor, very kindly, said, “Maybe it’s time for you to stop thinking that.”

Her healing began there.

I believe that I did hurt my knee 15 years ago — but mildly, temporarily, and not in a way that it needed to cause me pain for a decade. I believe that my “bad” knee lived on inside my mind, not in my knee itself. When pain abides in the mind, it does not mean you are crazy, or that the pain is any less “real”. Trust me, my knee HURT. It just means that pain is living on within your body because — for some reason — it must. Because you are not done suffering. Because I was in heart-pain for ten years, and that pain needed a location. My poor knee took the pain for me. Until it didn’t want to any more.

Anyhow — what if you are stronger than you think?

I am all for people treating themselves with gentle loving care (and maybe part of my recovery from emotional pain was all about focusing on treating my knee like a poor, suffering baby — so that I could take care of myself with kindness at some level. Maybe that helped me to heal my heart.) But what if there are parts of your body that don’t want to be babied foever?

What if every single part of us longs to be USED?

What if our bodies long to be freed from the past, so that they can move as they were designed to move?

What if our hearts long to love?

What if our minds long to be creative?

What if our spirits just want everything to be forgiven?

What if your knee wants you to climb a mountain, to show you how powerful you actually are?

Wouldn’t that be crazy?

Wouldn’t that be freaking wild?

Wouldn’t that fill you with so much joy, you feel that your heart may burst from it?

ONWARD,
L Gilbert

The Power Of Forgiveness, Plus Free Essential Oils And Chakra Workshops And Sacred Science Movie

Did you know that unforgiveness is now classified in medical books as a disease? I certainly know it causes dis-ease and stress, which are known to be key contributing factors in many diseases. Here’s a short article about the part forgiveness plays in the healing process…..

Unforgiveness is classified in medical books as a disease. According to Dr. Steven Standiford, chief of surgery at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, refusing to forgive makes people sick and keeps them that way.

With that in mind, forgiveness therapy is now being used to help treat diseases, such as cancer.

“It’s important to treat emotional wounds or disorders because they really can hinder someone’s reactions to the treatments, even someone’s willingness to pursue treatment,” Standiford explained.

Of all cancer patients, 61 percent have forgiveness issues, and of those, more than half are severe, according to research by Dr. Michael Barry, a pastor and the author of the book, The Forgiveness Project.

“Harboring these negative emotions, this anger and hatred, creates a state of chronic anxiety,” he said.

“Chronic anxiety very predictably produces excess adrenaline and cortisol, which deplete the production of natural killer cells, which is your body’s foot soldier in the fight against cancer,” he explained.

Barry said the first step in learning to forgive is to realize how much we have been forgiven by God.

“When a person forgives from the heart – which is the gold standard we see in Matthew 18, forgiveness from the heart – we find that they are able to find a sense of peacefulness. Quite often our patients refer to that as a feeling of lightness,” he said.

Barry said most people don’t realize what a burden anger and hatred were until they let them go.

As it mentions in this very short video, forgiveness is not the same as condoning what someone did. It’s about letting go of the anger and hurt so you are free to move forward with your life:

http://www.cbn.com/tv/embedplayernews.aspx?bcid=4312936813001

This excerpt from an article by Vishen Lakhiani of Mind Valley has even more about the power of forgiveness….

Through this process of quantifying meditation they discovered that forgiveness meditation is far and away the best meditation to further your practice, get you into more and more favorable brain waves – and basically all of the benefits we’ve all been hoping to get out of meditation all along!
So much so that they ONLY do forgiveness meditation at this center!
“Having collected a vast amount of data, they discovered that different brainwave patterns were associated to different types of people. They studied highly creative people, Zen monks, billionaires. All of them showed very different and distinct brainwave patterns.

What’s really exciting was that he found a way to train people to replicate these patterns.”
“We had to forgive every single person in our lives who had wronged us. Even if it was in the slightest way imaginable.
I had to forgive high school teachers. Business partners. Family members. Everyone I could think of that I believed wronged me, big or small.
And every time I did a round of forgiveness, my alpha waves would spike. The people behind the program discovered that the single biggest factor suppressing alpha waves are holding on to grudges and anger. So it was critical for us to be able to release every last bit of it out of our system.”

First you imagine the person and the scene of the event where the hurt took place, next you feel the hurt or anger, and finally you move on to forgiveness through seeing what the situation taught you and fostering compassion for where that person might be in their own life.

Get Healthier With Gratitude!

And here are several free health resources for you to check out this weekend. First up, an 8-part workshop on the chakras from The Chopra Center…….

Want to push past your fears and life challenges? Understanding the mind-body energy system—known as the Chakra system—is the first step to overcoming obstacles and stagnancy in your life.

The Sanskrit word Chakra literally translates to wheel or disk. In yoga, meditation and Ayurveda, this term refers to wheels of energy throughout the mind-body system. To visualize a Chakra in your body, imagine a swirling wheel of energy that keeps you vibrant, healthy, and alive.

Since everything in the mind-body energy system is moving, it’s essential that your seven main Chakras stay open, aligned, and fluid. If there’s a blockage, energy cannot flow. In this eight-part series, you’ll learn all about this mind-body energy system, and find out how to open your Chakras to unblock, move, and transform energy and obstacles in your life.

This free, eight-part series will give you a taste of some energetic healing techniques you would learn at the in-depth program, Healing the Heart. We’ll be exploring each of the seven main Chakras in depth as well as learning tips on how to align them.

Free yourself from past challenges, open to new possibilities, and get “unstuck” with total awareness of your Chakras.

Find out more and sign up here.

Next, a free introductory course on essential oils…..

Spring Detox Tips, Plus More Free Resources!

Well, we’re actually about to leave spring behind here in the eastern US, but these detox tips from Sandhiya Ramaswamy would be good no matter what time of the year it is. When I read what the tips were, I was pleased to note that I’ve already done individual posts on most of them that you can refer to for more in-depth information….

5 Ayurvedic Detox Tips for Spring

(by Sandhiya Ramaswamy) Spring and fall are important times of the year to detoxify, according to Ayurveda. A spring detox is especially important as an antidote for the excesses of the winter (think holidays).

To maintain health and balance in the long run, however, Ayurveda also recommends a daily detox protocol. If you don’t yet have one, spring is the best time to put one in place. Incorporate these five detox tips into your daily life to feel lighter and energized as you head into the warmer months.

Scrape Your Tongue

Use a tongue scraper first thing in the morning, before you brush your teeth. Ayurveda recommends tongue scraping to help boost the health of the oral cavity, including the teeth and sinuses, and to aid digestion. Digestion begins in the mouth as saliva mixes with the food and breaks it down. An excessively thick coating indicates the presence of Ama or toxins in the digestive system. Use a high-quality U- or V-shaped stainless steel or copper tongue scraper.

How to use a traditional tongue scraper:

  1. Hold each end with your hands and reach the arch to the back of your tongue, going as far back as possible without gagging.
  2. Scrape forward several times, rinsing the white film off of the scraper between each scraping. Be gentle but firm as you scrape.
  3. Rinse your mouth with water.
  4. Clean and dry your scraper with water. You may want to occasionally use baking soda to disinfect.

Drink Warm Water With Lemon

Start your morning with a glass of hot water and the juice of half a lemon or lime. This will cleanse your digestive tract and perhaps initiate a bowel movement (if you don’t normally eliminate first thing in the morning) to the get the toxins out of your digestive tract. The sour taste will enkindle the digestive fire or Agni setting you up for good digestion and metabolism first thing in the morning.

Use Herbs and Spices to Improve Digestion and Metabolism

Drink warm herbal teas throughout the day. Cinnamon, ginger, fennel, and mint are good options. You should also cook your food with liberal doses of herbs and spices. Use culinary herbs such as basil, rosemary, thyme, and oregano, and spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, mint, sage, and parsley in generous amounts.

Dry Brush Your Skin

Dry skin brushing has long been a part of Ayurveda’s cleansing philosophies. Your skin is an organ of elimination, just like your kidneys, liver, and colon. Dry skin brushing helps keep the pores clear and the skin active to assist the body in this cleansing process. It also helps to increase blood circulation. Dry brushing exfoliates the skin’s outer layer and stimulates the sweat and oil glands, providing more moisture for the skin.

How to dry skin brush:

  • Dry brush first thing in the morning before you shower. Start with light pressure and then move on to firmer strokes.
  • Use a natural bristled brush, loofah, or raw silk gloves.
  • Start with the soles of your feet using swift upward strokes. Brush from the feet up the legs, working toward your heart.
  • Next, move to your hands and work up your arms toward your heart in the same manner.
  • Brush your back, as best you can, using a long handle brush.
  • Work on your abdomen, moving in a clockwise direction to follow the movement of the colon, then do the chest and neck.
  • Avoid dry brushing your face as facial skin is too sensitive.
  • Brush for about 3 to 5 minutes until your skin is slightly tingly.
  • Shower after you dry brush to wash off the dead skin.
  • Periodically wash your brush with warm soap and water.

Massage Yourself

Using warm dosha-specific oil, perform self-massage or Abhyanga 2 to 3 times a week. Massaging the entire body with warm oil helps improve circulation, activate the lymphatic system, and aid in detoxification. Note that you should only perform self-massage on the days you do not dry brush.

Instead of adopting all five of these practices at once, you can incorporate one per week during the first few weeks of the season. If you take the time to turn each action into a habit, it will be easier to stick with your detox routine throughout the entire year.

–
For years, I was a sugar junkie. Many people have a sweet tooth, but I literally ate sugary candies every single day even when I found them disgusting.

Sugar is not just empty calories, it’s harmful to your hormones, your digestion, your complexion and even your brain. This is not news, most people realize sugar is bad…
… but how do you quit? This stuff is seriously addicting.

I don’t believe there is only one way, but there are some really great strategies I’d like to share with you from my interview with best-selling author, Tosca Reno.

Trees: They’re Not Just For Hugging :-)

A great way to improve your overall health and well-being is often as simple as going out and spending some time in Nature. Here’s a fascinating read from the Up Lift site about the science behind why we naturally feel better…

–

TREE HUGGING NOW SCIENTIFICALLY VALIDATED

(WRITTEN BY THE EDITORIAL STAFF ON 28 DECEMBER 2012. POSTED IN NATURAL HEALING)

Die hard conservatives love to disparage liberals as tree huggers, but it has been recently scientifically validated that hugging trees is actually good for you. Research has shown that you don’t even have to touch a tree to get better, you just need to be within its vicinity has a beneficial effect.

In a recently published book, Blinded by Science, the author Matthew Silverstone, proves scientifically that trees do in fact improve many health issues such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), concentration levels, reaction times, depression and other forms of mental illness. He even points to research indicating a tree’s ability to alleviate headaches in humans seeking relief by communing with trees.

The author points to a number of studies that have shown that children show significant psychological and physiological improvement in terms of their health and well being when they interact with plants and trees. Specifically, the research indicates that children function better cognitively and emotionally in green environments and have more creative play in green areas. Also, he quotes a major public health report that investigated the association between green spaces and mental health concluded that “access to nature can significantly contribute to our mental capital and well-being”.

So what is it about nature that can have these significant effects? Up until now it has been thought to be the open green spaces that cause this effect. However, Matthew Silverstone, shows that it is nothing to do with this by proving scientifically that it is the vibrational properties of trees and plants that give us the health benefits and not the open green spaces.

The answer to how plants and trees affect us physiologically turns out to be very simple. It is all to do with the fact that everything vibrates in a subtle manner, and different vibrations affect biological behaviours. One research experiment showed that if you drink a glass of water that has been treated with a “10Hz vibration” your blood coagulation rates will change immediately on ingesting the treated water. It is the same with trees, when touching a tree its different vibrational pattern will affect various biological behaviours within your body.

This vibrational idea is backed up throughout the book by a number of scientific studies to provide convincing proof that tree hugging after all is not such a crazy idea. One report even concluded the following: “safe, green spaces may be as effective as prescription drugs in treating some forms of mental illnesses”.

There is one other school of thought are in alignment with this remarkable theory: Taoism. For example, the Taoist master Mantak Chia teaches students to meditate with trees, as a way of release “negative energies.” In his Cosmic Tree Healing Qigong method, Master Chia teaches how to align one’s body with the “aura” (or energetic field) of a tree. He explains that trees are natural processors that can help you transform your body’s sick or negative energy into positive, vital life force energy. As you connect your energy with the tree you facilitate your own physical and emotional healing. The Taoist theory is that because trees stand very still, they are better at absorbing the Earth’s Energy and the Universal Force from the Heavens. Trees and all plants have the ability to absorb the light frequencies and transform them into physical food; and they do the same with energetic food. The Taoist view of trees is to see them constantly in meditation, with subtle energy as their natural language.

One other fascinating laboratory that studies plant vibrational energies is Damanhur, an intentional community in Italy. In this peaceful and spiritual eco-village there is a laboratory in the woods that offers a beautiful choir of singing trees. Yeah, you read that right… singing trees. Since 1976, researchers at Damanhur have invented and developed equipment that can capture electromagnetic changes on the surface of leaves and roots, transforming them into actual sounds. The best part is, these trees seem to control their electrical responses via a feedback mechanism, and demonstrate a kind of awareness and preference for types of music. The singing plants and trees of Damanhur have sparked off such a worldwide fascination that the people began organizing “Plant Concerts”, where musicians perform to the music created by the trees.

Watch this 15-minute video of a beautiful demonstration singing plants while one of Damanhur’s researchers explains the phenomenon.

An excerpt from an article about how trees save lives and health costs:

Not only do trees help reduce air pollution and therefore help us breathe easier, but it has also been found that simply touching a tree or being near one can make you feel healthier and happier. By helping to improve reaction times, depression, concentration levels, etc., trees and plants can help improve your mental outlook and overall sense of well-being.

Research presented at a 2009 American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Chicago indicated that people who live in areas that have more trees, parks, grass and green areas live longer and had improved mental and physical health. One study even indicated that your overall health could be predicted by the total amount of green space within a 1- to 3-mile radius of your home.

3/12/18 Update: Here are two more tree-related resources I’ve come across lately. The first is an article about the spiritual power of trees, and the 2nd is a 5 minute video from psychic Alicia Power about how to commune/communicate with trees (or flowers, etc). Both really helped me have so much more love and respect for these wonderful Nature beings and how they serve us:

The benefit of hearing the sounds of Nature:

PERSONAL NOTE: BTW, I have some friends who have spent time at Damanhur and they were so impressed with the community there, the level of creativity, and way of living in cooperation with Nature and each other. There’s a website where you can read more about it and experience some of the amazing artwork generated there.

Also, I read Matthew Silverstone’s Blinded By Science, mentioned in the beginning of the article, a year or so ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fascinating…. and filled with mind and heart-expanding data. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoyed reading this blog post.

And how this article talks about the healing properties of trees reminds me of the work of Kaitlyn Keyt, the creator of the Vibes Up line of products. In her interviews and presentations she talks about how certain trees were (and are) her teachers and actually helped guide her to the formulas used in her Visionary Award winning energy mats and other items. I absolutely love the philosophy and science behind what she offers and use a number of her products on a daily basis. But that’s a whole story in itself, so I will be writing an upcoming blog post (update: see the post here) that talks more about that.

Mothering Yourself

During my quest for better health I have come to realize that nutrition, exercise and mental attitude are important, but what is at the heart of many illnesses is the dis-ease caused by lack of self-love. People may think they love themselves, but from my own experience I feel that’s rarely true. It’s common for us to be constantly judging/comparing ourselves and putting others’ needs before our own because we’ve been taught that we’re being selfish if we don’t. So how does all that honor and show love to ourselves? It’s hard for a body to reflect vibrant health and well-being when the mind is focused on our seeming imperfections and the heart is unpracticed at sending it’s love inward.

But how do we begin rectifying the situation? Well, with Mother’s Day upon us, this article by Tama Kieves provides some great insights as to how/where to start…

Mothering Ourselves: Nurturing Yourself, Your Dreams, and the World

I have had to learn how to mother myself in this lifetime. I love my mother, more so these days than ever before, but for many years I felt like I got the short end of the umbilical cord. Like many of us, I didn’t get the movie mother in this lifetime, the tireless cheerleader, the fierce cub-protector, or the one who listened deeply to all my secret places and saw colors in me, I had yet to see. That mother was on back order when I was placing my cosmic selection.  Instead, I got someone who hadn’t exactly read the manual, and I know now, deserved and needed a mother herself.

But I have become a great mother to myself.

It’s taken years mind you. At first, I took the sad track to the broken amusement park ride of “It’s Not Fair.” But you can only ride that ride for so long before you realize that nothing has changed and never will. Yes, I’d wince when I met someone who had a mother that was their best friend, or someone they aspired to be like. I’d avert my eyes from that glow like seeing something so beautiful and private, something I could never have, something not meant for me.

But it was meant for me. It was meant for all of us. Even if you have a great mother, it’s important and life-changing to become that nurturing presence for yourself. It’s a practice. You can get better at chess or yoga. And you can get better at being there for yourself in ways that rock your soul.

I have learned to become a fierce advocate for my joy. I am still working on becoming a resourceful presence for my pain. Here’s some of what I practice: I tell myself, “you can tell me anything,” and I mean it. I no longer punish myself for feeling helpless, angry, jealous or stuck, and I’m willing to fill a thousand journals with my feelings.  I buy myself tokens and totems to celebrate achievements, large and very, very small. I whisper to myself in the crevices of emptiness between my bones, “I’m proud of you. I’m proud of you. I have so much faith in you.”

I used to think it was sad to have to be nice to myself, since I didn’t have a “real person” to do it. Then I thought it could even be destructive, as though the worst parts of me, liberated from criticism and threats, could grow like spores, live on pizza, and let reality T.V. replace reality.

But it turns out that I’m not reckless when loved; I’m soothed and healed. Turns out that when I don’t have to protect myself from my own self judgment I’m really not all that interested in indulgence and escapism.  And lately, I see self-kindness as a matter of pragmatism and responsibility. I am called to be a steward of the abilities and gifts that only I have, to represent the sacred love that comes through me, to tend my fire, keep it burning, creating one more source of light and warmth in our world. And as I take care of myself, I am one less broken soul, one more capable being on the front lines ready to tend the wounded.

I’ve learned how to mother myself from many sources, for which I am so grateful. I’ve learned from the forgiving eyes of therapists how to listen to myself with less judgment and attack. I’ve learned from the tender gestures of friends and lovers how to buy myself grapefruit juice, treasure my impish smile, and to say “oh honey,” in the hard times.

I’ve also been amazed by the spontaneous mothering I’ve experienced in life from total strangers, people who saw me leaning against a wall like a wild rose bush, and who gently tucked a trellis underneath my leaves and helped me find a stable way to grow. I have been saved, redeemed, and taught by the kindness of brief acquaintances who may have offered something basic to them, but who loosened a dark primeval knot inside my soul. I’ve felt safer in this life knowing that mothers, beings of nurturing and kindness, support and love are everywhere and that I do not have to be related to be deeply connected.

I’ve also learned so much from different wisdom paths such as Buddhism and A Course in Miracles. I’ve learned to become a loving witness for others and in so doing I’ve become that witness for myself.  I’ve learned to discover and listen to a sweet beloved inner voice that is mother, father, lover, creator and an original intelligence with the power of ten thousand waterfalls, the softness of a puppy’s breath. I continue to learn that I am never alone and infinitely loved, though love may come from a line in a book or the fragrance of a garden.

Since I have committed to following my dreams in this lifetime, I deliberately set out to become my own advocate and cheerleader. I knew there would be cut glass upon the path, abandoned markers, questions and locked doors. I have consciously created a voice of encouragement within myself, one who sees how brave I am just for daring, one who doesn’t care about results, but cares about the efforts. It’s this voice that keeps me warm with praise, and puts cotton in my ears when dark stories are told. It’s this voice that keeps lists of encouraging signs, scraps of evidence in my favor.  It is this voice that will scream from the bleachers when I die, “Way to go dear one, you gave it everything you had. It’s been a great ride!”

The beautiful thing about becoming this presence to myself is how much it’s enabled me to gift others with this love, to be that generous stranger for another, to be that lightning rod for my friends, family, clients and students. I’ve turned some of my private ache into public service. I have even learned to mother my mother, a rag tag child herself, lost at sea in judgments and opinions and injuries I will never fully know. Sometimes I do not feel appreciated or seen by her. But I accept that now.  Because I am always appreciated and seen by me.

(For those of you in my tribe who are wondering, yes, this article is a reprint of one  I sent you years earlier, and yes, my precious mother is no longer with me (in body anyway) and I love her more than ever before.)

This month, I’d like you to think of nurturing yourself as your responsibility.  Do something truly kind for yourself. Can you buy yourself a small gift or token of gratitude and support? Also, are there people in your life that you would like to thank for their tenderness or example of kindness? The world is full of dynamite mothers, and some of them are men and some of them are dogs and cats.

Would love to hear anything/everything from you, dear one, on the blog or Facebook.
