Vibes Up AgeLESS Extreme Cream Special + Oral Health + Plus Free Scalar Sessions!

A quick post to let you know about some great deals and free stuff!

Anyone who’s followed this blog for awhile knows what a fan I am of the Vibes Up products. Love that they are from a company it’s a pleasure to support and they provide multiple benefits (help balance our bodies, off-set EMFs, add nurturing Earth energy to our environment, and more!)

Well, I found out recently they are having a wonderful special on one of my absolute favorite products…..the AgeLESS Extreme Cream. Have been using this for a number of years and when my friend from CA sent me a Vibes Up gift card last Christmas, this was the first thing I used it for, since I’d almost used up my current supply.

Read the message below from VU owner and Visionary Product Award winner Kaitlyn Keyt to discover just some of what makes this cream so unique. She playfully calls it “the lazy girls (or boys) cream,” because it does so much with so little effort on your part, which basically involves just spreading it on your skin. ūüôā And I love that it now offers even better sunscreen protection than before, AND from ALL-NATURAL sources.

VU squishy energy mats are also on special right now; these are my #1 fave, because of their versatility. I have bought a number of mats over the years in a variety of sizes and shapes and use them on a daily basis, so NOW is definitely the time to visit Vibes Up! p. s. I also highly recommend the Therapy Bears, VibeLITES, and shungite bracelets.

Provides vibrational therapy for skin care, energy work or specific areas that need TLC!

EWG and others have released cautions that many kinds of sunscreens contain ingredients that are toxic, create imbalances in the body, and can cause cancer. The AgeLESS Crystal Cream NOW also contains carrot and raspberry seed extracts, which are known for their sun protection abilities that can go comparatively up to 32 SPF. Amazing how great natural products can work!

Each person is different, so test the cream on yourself for short exposure and see how much it helps, and remember to never over-expose your skin to sun. I used it on a cruise by putting it on my arms and first tried a little exposure. When I saw how great it worked on my lily white skin, I did it again for a half day of exposure and it worked GREAT for me. Now I use it as my main source of sun protection along with bringing a thin long sleeved cover up for when the sun gets intense.

We did a special batch of body lotion and added bigger crystals, some AgeLESS formula and natural sunscreen alternative. Details below of how we are giving 6 oz pouches of this away in the cream special.

Aging has everything to do with vibrations; the lower something vibrates, the faster it deteriorates. Feel the buzz, this crystal cream raises the vibrations of you and your skin. It was nicknamed the BUZZ CREAM, because people were walking around telling others their hands were buzzing from sampling it at our expo booth. Apply to face, neck and hands, or anyplace that needs some extra good energy.

Crystal Cream is a yummy blend of actual tiny crystals, minerals, essential oils, flower essences, herbs¬†and VibesUP’s famous liquid crystal amplifying formula that can be used for skin care, or you can even apply it to your hands/palms to bring more of Nature’s miracle vibrations into any energy work you do. You can also apply to a specific area that could use some extra TLC, such as a sore throat, knee, stiff shoulders etc.

I use to have large pores that would get clogged, etc. I recently had a facial and the lady commented on how nice and taut and clean my pores were. Yeah!!

Kaitlyn uses AgeLESS Crystal Cream on her face, neck, chest and ONLY left hand and no cream on the right hand. Look for differences not only in wrinkles, but age spots, veins and even color VIBRANCY.

A picture is worth a 1000 words! Do¬† a ‘hands-on’ experiment ( yes, pun intended). Sometimes, as we achieve improvements, we forget how things were before. So I applied the Crystal Cream every morning and every evening to my face neck and chest and to the top of my left hand only. Within a couple of weeks I could see a noticeable difference.

Now, it has been several years. It always makes me happy to look at the tops of my hands and say the left hand is my skin on my face now and the right hand is how it would be if I had not used the cream.¬† I am 55 years old; the skin on my face is virtually wrinkle free. AND it’s not just about wrinkles… the skin color is better, more vibrant, and there are no age spots on the area of the hand I use the cream on.

Again, I apply the cream to my face, neck, chest and back of only one hand. This way I can compare the progress. Keep your eye on changes in the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, veins and even the vibrant coloring. You can look at your hands and say, THAT is how my skin WAS, and THIS is how it IS NOW with Vibrational Therapy! It’s fun to show others and watch them start to have a new perspective on how powerful the effect of vibrational energy is!

Hydrogen Peroxide: Inexpensive Multi-purpose Health, Household And Beauty Aid

Hydrogen peroxide is one of those readily available, inexpensive items that everyone is familiar with, but may not be aware of the wide variety of uses it has. It is definitely a multi-purpose health, household and beauty aid that should always be on hand, and this article by Andrea Harper does a good job of highlighting a number of ways hydrogen peroxide can help make your life easier and healthier. Just like¬†apple cider vinegar and baking soda, no home should be without it……

By Andrea Harper

Hydrogen peroxide is the only germicidal agent composed only of water and oxygen. Like ozone, it kills disease organisms by oxidation! Hydrogen peroxide is considered the worlds safest all natural effective sanitizer. It kills microorganisms by oxidizing them, which can be best described as a controlled burning process. When Hydrogen peroxide reacts with organic material it breaks down into oxygen and water.

1. Whiten Clothes ‚Äď An Alternative to Beach

Add a cup of peroxide to white clothes in your laundry to whiten them. Peroxide is great to get rid of blood stains on clothes and carpets. If there is blood on clothing, just pour directly on the spot, let it sit for about a minute, then rub and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

2. Health

Your body makes hydrogen peroxide to fight infection which must be present for our immune system to function correctly. White blood cells are known as leukocytes. A sub-class of leukocytes called neutrophils produce hydrogen peroxide as the first line of defense against toxins, parasites, bacteria, viruses and yeast.

3. Rejuvenating Detoxifying Bath

Use about 2 quarts 3% hydrogen peroxide to a tub of warm water. Soak at least 1/2 hour, adding hot water as needed to maintain a comfortable water temperature.

4. Foot Fungus

To cure a foot fungus, simply spray a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry.

5. Douche

Add 2 capfuls of 3% hydrogen peroxide in warm distilled water once or twice a week to remove even chronic yeast infections.

6. Colonic or Enema

For a colonic, add 1 cup (8 ozs.) 3% H202 to 5 gallons warm water. (Do not exceed this amount) For an enema, add 1 tablespoon of 3% H202 to a quart of warm distilled water.

7. Infections

Soak any infections or cuts in 3% for five to ten minutes several times a day. Even gangrene that would not heal with any medicine has been healed by soaking in hydrogen peroxide. Put half a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in your bath to help rid boils, fungus or other skin infections.

8. Bird Mites Infections

Patients infected by tiny mites report that hydrogen peroxide effectively kills the mites on their skins. They spray it on their skin a couple of times (with a few minutes in between the applications) with amazing results.

9. Sinus Infections

A tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide added to 1 cup of non-chlorinated water can be used as a nasal spray. Depending on the degree of sinus involvement, one will have to adjust the amount of peroxide used.

10. Wound Care

3% H2O2 is used medically for cleaning wounds, removing dead tissue, and as an oral debriding agent. Peroxide stops slow (small vessel) wound bleeding/oozing, as well.

Some sources recommend soaking infections or cuts for five to ten minutes several times a day. However, washing and rinsing action is sufficient. You shouldn’t leave the solution on open tissue for extended periods of time as, like many oxidative antiseptics, hydrogen peroxide causes mild damage to tissue in open wounds. Therefore it is important to use with caution.

Personal Care

Mouthwash / Tooth Care

Healing Properties: Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. You will not have canker sores and your teeth will be whiter. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% hydrogen peroxide into your mouth and hold it for 10 minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly.

Personal Note: I would be careful with this and any of the other tips where you are using H2O2 in your mouth, as it may damage tooth enamel.

11. Mouthwash

Many people don‚Äôt realize that hydrogen peroxide makes a very effective and inexpensive mouthwash. Use a mixture of equal parts 3% H202 and water ‚Äď add a dash of liquid chlorophyll for flavoring, if desired.

12. Toothpaste

Use baking soda and add enough 3% H202 to make a paste. You can also add some crystal salt.

13. Toothbrush

Or, just dip your brush in 3% H202 and brush. Soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide to keep them free of germs.

14. Tooth Ache

Hydrogen peroxide is not a pain killer; however, as an anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-fungal agent, it is effective at treating the pathogen that is causing the infection. The following is from my own personal experience: My dentist wanted to give me a root canal some time ago as one tooth was inflamed and, in her opinion, would die. I felt some discomfort but told her that I would give it  a chance to heal. I rinsed with hydrogen peroxide (several times a day) as well as coconut oil (once a day). The discomfort went away and I have had no further problems with the tooth.

15. Tooth Whitening

Having used 3% hydrogen peroxide as a mouth wash for sometime ago, I am thrilled to note that my teeth have been beautifully and effortlessly whitened. I used to pay so much for professional whitening, those silly strips and uncomfortable trays. Live and learn.

NOTE: Do not swallow any peroxide. When the peroxide rinse is done, be sure to rinse out your mouth with water.

16. Hair Lightening

Peroxide is a bleaching agent and is used for lightened hair. Dilute 3% hydrogen peroxide with water (50 / 50) and spray the solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not have the peroxide burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages, but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually so it’s not a drastic change.

17. Contact Lenses

Hydrogen peroxide is used as a disinfectant in CIBA Vision’s Clear Care no rub contact lens cleaning solution, due to its ability to break down the proteins that build up on the lens from the eye’s immune response, resulting in increased comfort for those with sensitive eyes.

Sanitizing / Disinfectant / Cleaning

18. Straight or Diluted Hydrogen Peroxide

Clean your counters and table tops with hydrogen peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters. Use hydrogen peroxide to clean glass and mirrors with no smearing.

Keep a spray bottle of 3% (straight) to disinfect the interior of the refrigerator and kids’ school lunch boxes.

19. In the Dishwasher

Add 2 oz. of 3% hydrogen peroxide to your regular washing formula.

Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour or spray hydrogen peroxide (and then vinegar) on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria.

A combination of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide makes a cheap, effective and non-toxic disinfectant agent and is said to be more effective at killing pathogens than bleach.  As it is non-toxic, you can use it to disinfect fruits and vegetables, as well as pet toys, equipment and cages.  In tests run at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, pairing vinegar and hydrogen peroxide mists, kills virtually all Salmonella, Shigella, or E. coli bacteria on heavily contaminated food and surfaces.

You need TWO spray bottles. DO NOT MIX the solutions together. Put straight vinegar in one and straight Hydrogen peroxide in the other spray bottle.

NOTE: Light destroys peroxide rather quickly. It’s best to leave it in its original bottle and screw in a spray head. DO NOT DILUTE THEM.

Remember for any sanitizer to work properly, the surface has to be clean before you use it.

When you want to sanitize a surface (vegetables, cutting board, counters, sink, cages, toys. toilets, floors, etc.), spray one (it doesn’t matter which one you use first) on the surface, then you spray on the other.  When they mix, for a brief time the chemical action of the two make a very powerful sanitizer.  You can rinse off the surface afterwards, if you want, but the result is non-toxic.

20. Mold

Clean with hydrogen peroxide when your house becomes a bio-hazard after its invaded by toxic mold, such as those with water damage.

21. Humidifiers/Steamers

Use 1 pint 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 gallon of water.

22. Laundry / Stain Removing

3% hydrogen peroxide¬†is the best stain lifter if used fairly soon ‚Äď although blood stains as old as 2 days have been successfully lifted with hydrogen peroxide, although it will bleach or discolor many fabrics. If a little peroxide is poured onto the stain, it will bubble up in the area of the blood, due to a reaction with catalase. After a few minutes the excess liquid can be wiped up with a cloth or paper towel and the stain will be gone.

3% H2O2 must be applied to clothing before blood stains can be accidentally ‚Äúset‚ÄĚ with heated water. Cold water and soap are then used to remove the peroxide treated blood.

23. Washing/Laundry

You can also add a cup of hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

Peroxide is a perfect alternate solution to keep those clothes white. Also, when chlorinating clothes, they tend to wear out faster ‚Äď peroxide won‚Äôt do that.

Food Preparation

24. Vegetable Soak

Use as a vegetable wash or soak to kill bacteria and neutralize chemicals. Add 1/4 cup 3% H202 to a full sink of cold water. Soak light skinned (light lettuce) 20 minutes, thicker skinned (like cucumbers) 30 minutes. Drain, dry and refrigerate. Prolongs freshness.

If time is a problem, spray vegetables (and fruits) with a solution of 3%. Let stand for a few minutes, rinse and dry.

25.Meat Sanitizing

You can also use it to rinse off your meat before cooking.

26. Leftover tossed salad

Spray with a solution of 1/2 cup water and 1 Tbsp. 5%. Drain, cover and refrigerate.

27. Marinade

Place meat, fish or poultry in a casserole (avoid using aluminium pans). Cover with a dilute solution of equal parts of water and 3% H202. Place loosely covered in refrigerator for 1/2 hour. Rinse and cook.

28. Sprouting Seeds

Add 1 ounce 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 pint of water and soak the seeds overnight. Add the same amount of hydrogen peroxide each time you rinse the seeds. You can also use a mixture of 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 32 parts water to improve your plants’ root system.

Grades of Hydrogen Peroxide

A) 3.5% Pharmaceutical Grade: This is the grade sold at your local drugstore or supermarket. This product is not recommended for internal use. It contains an assortment of stabilizers which shouldn’t be ingested. Various stabilizers include acetanilide, phenol, sodium stanate and tertrasodium phosphate.

B) 6% Beautician Grade: This is used in beauty shops to color hair and is not recommended for internal use.

C) 30% Reagent Grade: This is used for various scientific experimentation and also contains stabilizers. It is also not for internal use.

D) 30% to 32% Electronic Grade: This is used to clean electronic parts and not for internal use.

E) 35% Technical Grade: This is a more concentrated product than the Reagent Grade and differs slightly in that phosphorus is added to help neutralize any chlorine from the water used to dilute it.

F) 35% Food Grade: This is used in the production of foods like cheese, eggs, and whey-containing products. It is also sprayed on the foil lining of aseptic packages containing fruit juices and milk products. THIS IS THE ONLY GRADE RECOMMENDED FOR INTERNAL USE.

G) 90%: This is used as an oxygen source for rocket fuel.

Only 35% Food Grade hydrogen peroxide is recommended for internal use. At this concentration, however, hydrogen peroxide is a very strong oxidizer and if not diluted, it can be extremely dangerous or even fatal. Any concentrations over 10% can cause neurological reactions and damage to the upper gastrointestinal tract. There have been two known fatalities in children who ingested 27% and 40% concentrations of H202. Another report tells of a 26 month old female who swallowed one mouthful of 35% H202. She immediately began vomiting, followed by fainting and respiratory arrest. Fortunately, she was under emergency room care and although she experienced erosion and bleeding of the stomach and esophagus, she survived the incident. When she was re-examined 12 days later, the areas involved had healed (J Toxicol Clin Toxicol 90;28(1):95-100).

Personal note:  As with ANY food, drug, or supplement, using the product according to instructions is key to safety.  If someone uses too much, then of course ramifications may be felt.  We’ve NEVER heard of ANY harmful side effects from the correct usage of Food Grade hydrogen peroxide.

35% Food Grade H202 must be….

1. Handled carefully (direct contact will burn the skin- immediate flushing with water is recommended).

2. Diluted properly before use.

3. Stored safely and properly (after making a dilution the remainder should be stored tightly sealed in the freezer).

One of the most convenient methods of dispensing 35% H202 is from a small glass eye dropper bottle. These can be purchased at your local drugstore. Fill this with the 35% H202 and store the larger container in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator until more is needed. Store the eye dropper bottle in the refrigerator. The drops are mixed with either 6 to 8 ounces of distilled water, juice, aloe vera juice or gel.

(Don’t use chlorinated tap water to dilute the peroxide!)

Here’s more about this “miracle in a bottle” …….

Spray down the shower with hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria and viruses.

Wash shower curtains with hydrogen peroxide to remove mildew and soap scum. Place curtains in machine with a bath towel and your regular detergent. Add 1 cup full strength 3% hydrogen peroxide to the rinse cycle.

Use for towels that have become musty smelling. Combine 1/2 cup peroxide and 1/2 cup vinegar and let stand for 15 minutes, then wash as normal. Gets rid of the smell.

Use hydrogen peroxide to control fungi present in aquariums. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt your fish. Use sparingly for this purpose.

De-skunking solution: Combine 1 quart 3% H2O2, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 teaspoon Dawn dish detergent, 2 quarts warm water.

Clean your sponges: Soak them for 10 minutes in a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and warm water in a shallow dish. Rinse the sponges thoroughly afterward.

Remove baked-on crud from pots and pans. Combine hydrogen peroxide with enough baking soda to make a paste, then rub onto the dirty pan and let it sit for a while. Come back later with a scrubby sponge and some warm water, and the baked-on stains will lift right off.

Whiten bathtub grout: First dry the tub thoroughly, then spray it liberally with hydrogen peroxide. Let it sit (it may bubble slightly) for a little while, then come back and scrub the grout with an old toothbrush. You may have to repeat the process a few times.

Clean the toilet bowl: Pour half a cup of hydrogen peroxide into the toilet bowl, let stand for 20 minutes, then scrub clean.

Brighten dingy floors: Combine half a cup of hydrogen peroxide with one gallon of hot water, then go to town on your flooring. Because it’s so mild, it’s safe for any floor type, and there’s no need to rinse.

Clean kids’ toys and play areas: Hydrogen peroxide is a safe cleaner to use around kids, or anyone with respiratory problems because it’s not a lung irritant. Spray toys, toy boxes, doorknobs, and anything else your kids touch on a regular basis.

Help out your plants:To ward off fungus, add a little hydrogen peroxide to your spray bottle the next time you’re spritzing plants.

Dab hydrogen peroxide on pimples or acne to help clear skin.

Remove yellowing from lace curtains or tablecloths: Fill a sink with cold water and a 2 cups of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Soak for at least an hour, rinse in cold water and air dry.

Use it to remove ear wax. Use a solution of 3% with olive or almond oil. Add a couple drops of oil first then H2O2. After a few minutes, tilt head to remove solution and wax. Can also be used for swimmer’s ear.

Hydrogen peroxide could really be called oxygen water, since it is basically the same chemical make up as water but with an extra oxygen atom (H2O2). Because of this, it breaks down quickly and harmlessly into oxygen and water.

It is found in all living material.

Your white blood cells naturally produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to fight bacteria and infections.

Fruit and vegetables naturally produce hydrogen peroxide. This is one of the reasons why it is so healthy to eat fresh fruit and vegetables.

It is found in massive dosages in the mother’s first milk, called colostrum, and is transferred to the baby to boost their immune system.

It is found in rain water because some of the H20 in the atmosphere receives an additional oxygen atom from the ozone (O3) and this H2O2 makes plants grow faster.

Hydrogen peroxide has a very simple composition: just water and oxygen. However, its potency lies in its simplicity: it is a powerful antiseptic and can destroy a variety of pathogens through the process of oxidation.

While hydrogen peroxide is usually thought of as a disinfectant for minor cuts and scrapes, it can also be highly effective in halting colds and flu in their tracks. At the first sign of any distress (lethargy, coughing, sneezing, swollen glands, etc.), fill the cap with peroxide and fill your ear canal. Tilt head for 3 to 4 minutes (or longer) to retain (there may be some slight bubbling), then allow to drain out

The key to success with this home remedy is the timing. You must get the peroxide in the ear canal at the very first sign of illness for it to be effective. Miss the window and you will most likely suffer the full bout of the virus.

The theory behind the peroxide protocol came from Richard Simmons M.D., who hypothesized that colds and flu viruses enter the body through the ear canal, not the nose and throat. Like most other non-patentable therapies, the medical community at large ignored the hypothesis and the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide.

In 1938 German researchers used hydrogen peroxide to treat colds and flu with much success, but their research has also been all but ignored. However, even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide to kill influenza viruses.

Tips, Tip, Tips: Round Four AND Healthy Holiday Gift Ideas

Okay, here we go with round four of the Tips, Tips, Tips series where I share a variety of tips, rather than concentrating on one particular topic. Hope there’s something here everyone can make use of. And at the end of the post be sure to check out my webpage for some healthy holiday gift ideas, plus some free gifts for yourself!

# 1 – “Recycling” garlic……

Description Garlic.jpg

If you have a bulb of garlic that starts to sprout, there’s no need to toss it out. I had actually heard long ago that it would be bad to eat it, so I always cut the green out or threw the bulb in the garbage. but it turns out that sprouted garlic is actually¬†more nutritious. Makes sense, since sprouting almost anything increases ¬†its nutrient value and bio-availability (see Tip # 12). So you can eat the sprouted cloves for extra benefit or set the bulb in a little bit of water, and as more green shoots begin to show/grow, you can harvest and use them for a mild garlic taste in salads, omelets, etc., much as you would chives.

# 2 – A tasty sounding recipe from Webecoist for boosting your metabolism….

Fitness, Fit, Fitness Motivation, Fitness Quotes, Fitspiration, Fitness Inspiration! :)

For more on boosting your metabolism, see this post with a 7-pose yoga routine specifically designed for weight loss and metabolism: Yoga For Weight Loss & Metabolism

# 3 Р From TruthAboutAbs night time teas:

Try “night time teas” that have relaxing qualities such as chamomile tea, mint tea, lemongrass tea, or all of them mixed. ¬†A side benefit of chamomile tea, and another reason to include it in your weekly night tea repertoire, is that it contains unique phytonutrients that can help fight estrogenic overload from all of the xenoestrogens that we are exposed to from chemicals, pesticides, etc. in today’s chemical laden world.

Also remember that you can add a spoonful of tart cherry concentrate and you’ll get a double-whammy of sleep aid!¬† This works well about 1-2 hours before bedtime to help your body and mind relax.

# 4 – Did you know banana peels can be “re-purposed” in a variety of ways?

Whiten your teeth by rubbing the inside of the peel back and forth across them. You can also use the inside of the peel to shine and clean your indoor plants. And peels can be added to a compost pile whole or cut in pieces and scattered around the garden….oils from the peel help deter aphids; and rose bushes apparently love the extra potassium they provide.

# 5 РShiitake  Mushrooms

Shiitake mushrooms¬†contain a number of health-stimulating agents, including lentinan, which has anti-tumor properties. They also have antiviral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and immune-boosting effects. But it’s important to eat ONLY organically grown mushrooms, as they absorb and concentrate whatever they grow in ‚ÄĒ good or bad. Mushrooms are known to concentrate heavy metals, and air and water pollutants, which would defeat their medicinal value.

# 6 – From the Vitacost blog, here are several uses for apple cider vinegar you may not have heard of….

5 Amazing Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Rust Remover: Before you toss those old, rusty tools, bolts, utensils, pots or pans, soak a clean cloth in apple cider vinegar and try scrubbing away the rust. To remove a large amount of rust, you may need to soak the item in apple cider vinegar overnight.
  • Facial Toner: Dilute apple cider vinegar with water (1 part ACV to 4 parts water) for a homemade facial toner that may help restore the delicate pH of your skin. Apply lightly and avoid the eyes.
  • Soap Scum Scrub: Got stubborn soap scum? Spray with apple cider vinegar to help dissolve soap scum, mildew and other bathroom or kitchen grime, then wipe with a clean towel or cloth. This remedy also works well for your dishwasher ‚ÄĒ pour 1 cup of ACV in the bottom, let it sit for a few hours and then run the (empty) dishwasher on a hot water cycle to remove soap scum and odor-causing buildup.
  • Chrome Polish: Apple cider vinegar can help clean buildup and grime on chrome pots, fixtures and even wheel spokes and hubcaps. Just dip a clean cloth in vinegar and scrub gently. For caked-on dirt, try adding a pinch of baking soda ‚ÄĒ but be careful not to scratch or damage the chrome.
  • Ant Repellent: Keep annoying ants from invading your home by spraying doors, windows, crevices and other entryways with a 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water.

# 7 – Maybe sweet potatoes should be considered a ¬†superfood?! Here’s some info about them from Rhia Catatoldo at Medical Medium….

Sweet potatoes are an excellent anti-stress food and are known to help relax muscles, steady nerves, and balance cognitive function. They are also one of the best anti-cancer foods and can particularly help to prevent breast, colon, lung, skin, and oral cancers. Sweet potatoes are known for being easy to digest and are very good for ulcers, inflamed colons, digestive disorders, and constipation. Sweet potatoes contain compounds called phytochelatins that can bind to heavy metals such as lead, mercury, copper, and cadmium and safely remove them through the body.

# 8 – I haven’t heard of this one from Thrive Market before or tried it yet, but it sounds interesting…..

As weird as it sounds, a bit of ketchup on a dishrag will clean copper pots and pans.

# 9 – I knew coconut oil had a ton of uses, but I’ve never heard about this one for dry eyes from an article by Susan Pattern for The Alternative Daily before….

Susan writes “In order to liquify the coconut oil, I ran some hot water from the tap, and put it in a small bowl. In an even smaller bowl I added about a teaspoon of coconut oil. I placed the smaller bowl in the larger bowl until the oil liquified. Whatever you do, don‚Äôt use a microwave to melt your coconut oil. Microwaves change the molecular structure of the oil and kill the lauric acid that makes coconut oil so valuable.

Once the oil was liquified, I let it cool and used a small glass dropper to withdraw some from the bowl. I tipped my head back and put a few drops in each eye. For a couple of minutes my eyes were cloudy but they soon cleared.

I did this twice a day, morning and evening, for a week and found there was a substantial decrease in dryness. I seemed to be producing more natural tears and my eyes did not feel nearly as tired by the end of the day.”

Check out this post for more on the many uses and benefits of coconut oil.

# 10 –¬†I don‚Äôt know if this is accurate or not, but….

I read in an article at Natural News about taking detoxing baths that you can neutralize chlorine in your bath water by adding 2 teaspoons of vitamin C, and that adding Borax is helpful for eliminating fluoride (use 1 to 3 TBS per bath).

# 11 – A really short video on why buying non-GMO is only slightly better than GMO, and why organic is almost always the way to go…..

# 12 – Almost everything I read these days talks about the benefits of eating sprouted or fermented foods. ¬†Here’s a “wowie”statistic from Dr. Mercola…..

Fresh sprouts can be easily grown at home. A wide variety of seeds can be sprouted, which maximizes their nutritional value. For example, once sunflower seeds are sprouted, their protein, vitamin, and mineral content will typically provide you with 30 times the nutrient content of organic vegetables. (FYI, you can get Go Raw Organic Sprouted Sunflower Seeds at a great discount price at Vitacost.)

Epsom Salt: A Must-Have For Health, Home and Garden

Epsom salt is right up there with coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, and diatomaceous earth¬†as far as a simple, inexpensive health aid that has multiple benefits, can be used internally and externally, ….used in the kitchen, as well as the bathroom and garden. This is another one of those things no home should be with out!¬†This first article from Living In The Green does a good job of introducing you to the uses and benefits of Epsom salts, aka magnesium sulfate ….

Epsom Salt: A Must-Have for Home and Garden

Epsom “salt”…not really a salt at all but two minerals that our body actually uses and needs.

“Epsom salt is made up of magnesium and sulfate, which can help improve health in numerous ways. A lack of magnesium‚ÄĒwhich helps regulate the activity of more than 300 enzymes in the body‚ÄĒcan contribute to high blood pressure, hyperactivity, heart problems and other health issues, doctors warn. Sulfate is essential for many biological processes, helping to flush toxins and helping form proteins in joints, brain tissue and mucin proteins.”¬† – Epson Salt Council

Wow.¬† Pretty amazing for such a humble crystalline substance.¬† But this drugstore wonder is full of surprises.¬† It’s great as a hair conditioner, soak for sore achy muscles, and even as a garden fertilizer! Yes, it’s true…and there’s even more…

When I was growing up, we had wood floors in our house.¬† The upstairs floorboards had a few rough spots in them but we being kids, didn’t seem to notice.¬† Wood floors made a nice skating rink which we would skate on with socks.¬† One time though, I skated on some rough “ice” and promptly got a LARGE wood splinter in my foot.¬† Yuck.¬† I was horrified and did NOT want my parents to touch it.¬† The splinter itself was not willing to come out either, so in came the Epsom Salt.¬† Now, when you’re a kid faced with a probing knife to extract a splinter, soaking your foot in some nice warm water was a perfect way to make me relax.¬†¬†My parents loved me, but a spa experience was not what they had in mind, but rather a way to draw the splinter out of my skin and Epsom came through!¬† By the time my foot was done soaking, the splinter came out lickity-split¬†(much to my surprise)¬†and relatively pain-free.¬† So, Epsom salt saved the day and was my hero.

As soon as I got married, I purchased my own carton (they sell it in bags now…way better idea!) and kept it for emergencies.¬† We seem to use it for any foot problems, probably because of my previous memory of it, but it does SO much more!¬† Even the carton I have only lists a few of its many uses.¬† Here’s just a few: eliminates toxins by exfoliating and taking a bath in it – 2 cups in the tub, helps with athlete’s feet and toe fungus (see, it likes feet), cleans bathroom tiles – use equal parts of Epsom with dish detergent to clean, is a fertilizer for houseplants and vegetables/flowers*, relieves constipation (!) and much more!!¬† I will admit my experience with it is limited to the sliver incident (which by the way, is another thing on the list it does) and foot complaints…but it did a great job in these areas.¬† However, after writing this post, I am going to be sprinkling my Epsom salt on all my houseplants!

Here’s another great bonus for Epsom Salt…you can buy it at the drugstore.¬† No health stores, no fancy catalogs, no shipping charges; perfect.¬† I love the simplicity of these types of home remedies and garden helps.¬† After all, isn’t that part of living simply?

So, if you don’t have some Epsom Salt at home; run to the nearest Walgreen’s, pick up a bag and “skate” on your wood floors with a smile on your face…ahhhh.

*For houseplants: sprinkle epsom salt weekly to nourish your houseplants, flowers and vegetables.

And here’s a second article on epsom salt….it’s from Healthy and Natural World…

Epsom salts, my granny’s secret is being rediscovered…

Epsom salts, or magnesium sulfate, is a natural occurring mineral first discovered in a bitter saline spring in Epsom, England. Traditionally used as a bath salt, these days we can find them in many of our beauty and household products. Even gardeners use them to improve their crops.

Magnesium and sulfate both play an essential role for your body’s optimal health. Magnesium plays a major role in over 300 enzyme reactions, reduces inflammation and improves muscle and nerve function. Sulfate is important for the formation of brain tissue and joint proteins, and it helps to improve nutrient absorption and flushes toxins.

Did you know that almost half of the Americans have a magnesium and/or sulfate deficiency? And guess what, Epsom salts can help you restore magnesium and sulfate levels in your body. They can easily be absorbed through your skin and that’s why Epsom salt baths became so popular over the years.

But that’s not all, keep reading and discover how Epsom salts can aid you in your daily life.

Soaking in an Epsom salt bath is one of the easiest external ways to boost your magnesium and sulfate levels and detox your body. Research studies have shown that magnesium is more easily absorbed through your skin then via your digestive tract.

Just add 2 cups to your bath water and soak for at least 15 minutes, 3 times a week, to reap the benefits. Do not use soap as it will negatively interfere with the salts. To enhance relaxation, add lavender essential oil as well.

Benefits of adding Epsom salts to your bath tub:

‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Boost magnesium and sulfate levels
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Improved circulation and heart health.
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Improved ability for the body to use insulin
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Eliminates harmful toxins
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Relieves body aches
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Improved nerve function
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Natural stress-reliever, binds serotonin which creates a feeling of well-being and ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† relaxation.
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Reduced pain and muscle cramps
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Improved absorption of nutrients
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Reduce swelling of sprains and bruises
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Prevent or ease headaches
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Soften your skin
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Soothe itchy and sunburned skin
‚Äʬ†¬† ¬†Helps you and your children to sleep better

Rinse with clear water and be amazed by the result. You can also create effective cleaning products using essential oils. You can find all the information in my book Magical Arometherapy.

Keep Raccoons Out of Your Garbage

Instead of laying down dangerous poison that can be ingested by your kids or pets, try Epsom salts to keep raccoons naturally out of your garden.
Just sprinkle salt on the garbage lid and encircle the environment as well and those raccoons will search another place to feast.

Especially roses, palm trees and tomatoes are a huge fan of Epsom salts. Just work some Epsom salts into the soil during blooming and your plant will produce beautiful and long lasting flowers or fruits. Or add Epsom salts regularly to your watering routine to boost flavor, color and size.
Mix 1 tablespoon to a gallon water and sprinkle and soak each plant. For a greener, lush lawn, mix 2 tablespoons to every gallon used to water your lawn. This will also keep slugs and other insects and weeds under control.
As you can see, adding Epsom salts on a regular basis to your life provides many health benefits, but if you are pregnant or have any severe health concern, please check with your doctor before using them.

Ozone-Infused Oil For Enhanced Oil Pulling Results

The news about oil pulling and all its many benefits has really spread the last couple of years, especially since using coconut oil for the process has become so popular. I know my original¬†post¬†on the topic has certainly gotten a large number of views. So I’m excited to say there’s now a special ozone-infused coconut oil available that is supposed to increase the benefits and effectiveness of the oil pulling process…. ¬†

New Product For Enhanced Oil Pulling Results!

(by Mike Adams for Natural News) There’s a breakthrough in oral health that has the potential to help millions. It’s an¬†ozone-infused oil pulling remedy that you swish around your mouth for a few minutes each morning to radically transform your oral health.

The practice of “oil pulling” has been used for thousands of years to pull toxins from gum tissue in the mouth.* It’s a mainstay tool of Ayurvedic Medicine and many people swear by its benefits. But now¬†we’ve taken oil pulling into the 21st century with the addition of an ozone infusion right into the oil.

Ozone, the same elemental molecule you can smell in the air after a lightning storm, is now being used to radically transform modern dentistry. What dentists have discovered is that ozone kills bacteria throughout the mouth, including in tiny, microscopic crevices. Today, more and more dentists have become aware that old root canals may harbor dangerous bacteria and release toxins into the mouth which get swallowed into the body.

Millions of people are chronically poisoning themselves with toxic bacteria in their own mouth

Due to toxic bacteria, many people are chronically poisoning themselves by swallowing small amounts of toxic bacteria waste throughout the day. Eliminating the unhealthy bacteria that produce these body-harming toxins is essential to protecting your health. But antibacterial mouthwashes contain toxic chemical-like Triclosan, a very destructive chemical linked to superbugs. Mouthwashes are also usually made with either harsh alcohol or artificial chemical sweeteners and artificial chemical colors. (Most mouthwashes are extremely toxic.)

Oil pulling works far better than mouthwashes because oils are far better at penetrating all the tiny crevices and small areas around your gum tissue and teeth. If you’ve ever had a jar of coconut oil leak or spill, you know how coconut oil gets into everything, finding even the smallest opening to work its way through.

That’s why we chose coconut oil as the base oil for our oil pulling solution: it’s simply the best-performing oil available in the world for oil pulling.

Next, we blended it with ozone-infused jojoba oil, creating an oil combination with outstanding penetration and ozone-carrying capacity. The ozone rides with the oils, reaching every microscopic gum line, tooth crack or fissure anywhere in your mouth, delivering bacteria-killing ozone to all those areas as you swish the oil around your mouth each morning.

I recommend swishing this ozone-infused coconut + jojoba oil around your mouth for *5 minutes (see Tip # 1 at the end of this post) every morning. I find it easy to do while I’m showering or getting dressed. Afterwards, my mouth feels unbelievably refreshed and rejuvenated. There is a very small amount of organic peppermint oil blended into the product for taste only, but even with the peppermint oil, the product still tastes rather bland. This isn’t some candy-tasting processed mouthwash product here. This is a 100% natural formula based on an ancient medicine practice, upgraded with modern ozone technology.

How it’s made: the ozone infusion process

When you open the lid on our O3 Ozone-Infused Oil Pulling Solution (made from a blend of coconut and jojoba oils), you can instantly smell the ozone, much like a fresh breeze following a thunderstorm.

In your mouth, the ozone goes to work instantly, creating a tingling sensation as it neutralizes toxic bacteria in and around your gums and teeth. The longer you keep it in your mouth and swish it around, the longer it works to bathe your gums and teeth in ozone.

Getting that ozone into the oils, however, is a difficult and time-consuming process. It requires DAYS of meticulous work to saturate the oil with ozone, using very expensive high-technology ozone-producing equipment.

That’s why ozone-infused products are never cheap. Accomplishing the infusion takes a lot of time and investment. But the results are worth it: A breakthrough remedy solution representing a marriage of today’s most advanced technology with one of the most widely-used systems of holistic medicine in human history.

That’s why this product solution is so powerful… and rare. I don’t think an ozone-infused coconut + jojoba oil pulling solution has ever been made available to the public before. This is not only a first; it’s also a real breakthrough for oral health.

Extremely long shelf life, plus topical antiseptic properties

Keep in mind that the shelf life on this product is VERY long. It’s labeled at 3 years, but I’m guessing it will actually last a decade or more, making it an outstanding preparedness product, too. The ozone that’s infused into the oil blend is naturally anti-bacterial, serving as a kind of natural preservative for the solution.

What can O3 Ozone-Infused Oil Pulling Solution do for your oral health?

  • Help detoxify tongue, palate, gums, teeth and upper throat
  • Provide the highly effective, anti-microbial properties of O3–ozone oxygen
  • Benefit from coconut‚Äôs healthy medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) & the anti-bacterial properties of coconut‚Äôs lauric acid
  • Freshen breath with the cleansing, invigorating properties of peppermint
  • Through the process of oil pulling, paying attention to the mouth, jaw and facial muscles‚ÄĒ‚Äúfacial yoga‚ÄĚ‚ÄĒmay help prevent or lessen face and jaw related discomforts.

What’s even more fascinating about this product is that it can be used in a first aid context as an antibacterial skin treatment that kills bacteria on the surface of the skin. The coconut oil is soothing and supports healing, while the ozone kills bacteria.

You can purchase O3 Ozone-infused Oil from the Natural News store.

* See Tip # 1 below.

Here are some additional tips gleaned from my continued research on oil pulling that may not have been mentioned in my previous posts on the subject:

  1. I’ve heard/read of some people only pulling for 5 minutes, and while that would be great for a variety of reasons, basically every expert source I’ve encountered mentions 15 to 20 minutes as the ideal time to shoot for. It may be that Mike Adams mentions using the ozone-infused oil for 5 minutes because it’s not good to have the ozone in your mouth for longer or it’s so powerful it does a better job of detoxing in less time. ¬†Or it may be because it’s being used more as a mouthwash/dental hygiene thing than a way to help detox the overall body. What I would suggest is doing the pulling w/ regular oil for 15 minutes and then doing a second “round” of 5 minutes with the ozone-infused product.¬†If you’re in question as to the right amount of time ¬†to use for your body, muscle test to find out. To me that’s always best, since everybody and every body is different in what it wants or needs.
  2. If you are new to oil pulling you may not be able to do the process longer than 5 to 10 minutes initially. No worries! It takes some getting used to and will likely wear your jaw muscles out at first because they’re not used to working so hard. Just build up to the desired amount of time.
  3. If you’re having problems with your jaw/mouth being tired from the process, especially after you’ve been practicing for several weeks, it may be that you’re doing things too vigorously….fast and rigorous, like a mouthwash gargle, is not the way. You should actually be moving/pulling the oil through your teeth and from side to side, almost like a chewing/chomping kind of motion.
  4. A good way to know if you’ve pulled long enough is to notice the color of the oil when you spit it out. If it’s still clear, then you haven’t pulled long enough; it should usually be a milky white. Do another round and try to pull a little longer. Or if you need to spit out early, due to needing to sneeze, cough, answer the phone, or whatever, just start the process over with a fresh spoonful of oil.
  5. Most sources say to spit the oil in the toilet when you’re done, but I hate the thought of adding all those toxins to the water system, so I usually spit it in the garbage can, which I see as a ” lesser of two evils” solution, but that may not really be any better in the long run.
  6. After spitting, rinse your mouth with warm water with some Himalayan/sea salt added to help neutralize any lingering toxins/bacteria from the oil. At this point you have the choice of doing a second round of pulling, which some people say offers an even better detox result than the first, or move on to brushing your teeth.
  7. If you are ready for brushing your teeth, use a separate toothbrush from your normal one; have a toothbrush you use just for after oil pulling and be sure you soak it in a hydrogen peroxide solution routinely to help neutralize any toxins/bacteria that may build up in the bristles.
  8. To be honest, I often don’t take the time to do the salt water rinse and the brushing, but I DO always give a final rinse with structured water, which neutralizes toxins, so I figure that helps fill the bill. ūüôā
  9. You may want to add the Ayurvedic practice of tongue scraping to your oil pulling routine. I think I would do it before the oil pulling, but it may work well after, too. You can always muscle test or follow your intuition as to which sequence to use for your body.

And speaking of ozone-infused oil, Global Healing Center offers a product called O2-Zap that is a great multi-purpose health aid I think no first aid kit or beauty cabinet should be without. In fact, Mike Adams of Natural News is one of it’s biggest fans. He gave the whole line of GHC products a “Best Product Line” award, and especially raved about the o2-Zap. That’s why I initially bought some. It contains a¬†super-saturated formula of 98.5% pure oxygen with 1.5% ozone in organic cold pressed virgin olive oil, and can be used as a beauty treatment and/or first aid for burns, bug bites, scars, and more. Hey, maybe I should do a whole post on it!

Bee Propolis for Canker Sores, Cavities and More

Here’s an interesting article about using propolis for canker sores (and several other mouth/dental related issues) that I probably wouldn’t have taken the time to read a year or so ago because I’ve never had much problem with them. But after having several surgeries (one oral) this past year and developing canker sores after each one that were almost more painful than the surgeries themselves, I was more than interested in what it had to say.

I knew propolis had a number of health benefits, but now I will keep it in mind for dental health and especially if, god forbid, I get a canker sore again…..

File:Propolis in beehives.jpg

by Karen Sanders, staff writer for Natural Health 365

There is no doubt about it ‚Äď aphthous ulcers ‚Äď more commonly known as canker sores ‚Äď can be excruciatingly painful. They are also surprisingly common; up to 20 percent of the population has, or will have, one of these troublesome mouth lesions, which can linger for up to two weeks and cause severe stinging sensations that make eating and talking difficult.

To make matters worse, doctors don‚Äôt really know what causes canker sores ‚Äď although some nutrition experts believe¬†vitamin deficiencies¬†may be to blame in some cases ‚Äď and there is no conventional ‚Äėcure‚Äô. Prescription medications designed to relieve painful symptoms and limit the frequency of attacks do exist, but can carry serious side effects.

Is there a natural remedy for canker sores?

Once again, Mother Nature comes to the rescue ‚Äď propolis, a substance made by bees, is emerging as a drug-free treatment ‚Äď which can not only relieve symptoms but help to limit outbreaks of recurrent aphthous ulcers.

What exactly is propolis?

Also called bee putty and bee glue, propolis is a resinous substance used by bees to caulk, seal and secure their hives. Consisting of natural beeswax mixed with secretions from conifer trees, propolis is a natural germicide, and has been used for thousands of years by herbalists and natural healers to fight infection and speed wound healing.

Now, modern medical research is revealing the amazing beneficial effects of propolis on canker sores and dental health issues.

Naturopaths and medical authorities are impressed with propolis

Dr. Weil, M.D., a medical doctor, naturopath and leading expert on natural remedies, is sold on the therapeutic value of propolis. Noting that propolis has well-documented antibiotic and antiseptic properties, Weil endorses it as a safe and useful home remedy for canker sores.

On the conventional side, the University of Maryland Medical Center confirms the beneficial effects of propolis, and reports that it boosts the immune system and helps to fight infection. NYU Langone Medical Center notes that studies have shown that people who use propolis mouthwash after oral surgery have faster healing times. The center also confirms that test tube studies support propolis’ antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

How does propolis ease pain and prevent infections?

One key to propolis‚Äô powers is its high levels of antioxidant flavonoids ‚Äď which give it anti-microbial effects. Caffeic acid in propolis has been shown to influence epithelial function against microbes. Propolis also has natural anesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties.

In one animal study, a propolis extract showed an ability to reduce inflammation equivalent to that of diclofenac, a pharmaceutical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication sold under the trade name Fenac.

Has there been a clinical study specifically on propolis and canker sores?

Yes. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study published in Clinical Oral Investigation in 2007, canker sore sufferers were given either 500 milligrams of propolis per day, or a placebo. Researchers noted that 60 percent of the patients in the propolis group experienced more than 50 percent reduction in the frequency of canker sore outbreaks.

The team recommended the use of propolis to treat aphthous ulcers, and also called for larger scale studies to be conducted.

How does propolis prevent the development of cavities?

In a scientific review published in 2009 in¬†Journal of Ethnopharmacology, the authors examined numerous in vitro and in vivo studies of propolis conducted between 1978 and 2008. They concluded that propolis extracts reduced levels in saliva of Streptococcus mutans ‚Äď a bacteria responsible for dental caries ‚Äď while interfering with its adhesion capacity. The authors concluded that propolis is a promising cariostatic ‚Äď or cavity-preventing ‚Äď agent.

In addition, propolis is being investigated for its use in treating severe periodontal disease, as well as for its effectiveness as a tooth enamel hardener.

What is the best way to use propolis?

Propolis is available online and in health food stores in a wide variety of forms, including tablets, capsules, gargles, tinctures, toothpastes and mouthwashes. To treat canker sores, Dr Weil advises using it in a tincture; you can also take it in capsule form, as subjects did in the clinical study.

Naturally, you should check with your doctor or dentist before using propolis to treat canker sores. Propolis is considered generally safe, but some people develop allergic reactions to it, especially after extended use. An allergy to poplar or conifer trees can make a reaction more likely, as can a predisposition to eczema.

If you experience burning, swelling, redness, or fever, stop using propolis. If you are allergic to bee stings or bee products such as honey or royal jelly ‚Äď don‚Äôt use it.

Bottom line¬†‚Äď painful canker sores usually resolve without serious medical consequences, but this isn‚Äôt much comfort when you‚Äôre suffering the intense pain of these nasty little mouth ulcers. Propolis ‚Äď natural, drug-free, and safe ‚Äď could be just the ticket to bring blessed relief.

Also, does anyone have any information about the causes of canker sores? I have heard that stress, an overly-acidic body, and vitamin deficiencies can all be factors, but would be interested in what other people have read/heard.

It’s one of my favorite toothpastes, and typing all these benefits reminds me that I need to reorder. Wasn’t using it at the time I had the canker sores and it may have made a difference if I had been.

Anyway, I love all the Vibes Up products and the nice thing about the toothpaste is it comes with a free “sticky stone” (helps off-set EMFs and provides beneficial energies), which is a $20 value, so the cost of the toothpaste is more or less covered. ūüôā BTW, the toothpaste is gel-like and doesn’t really foam when you brush your teeth, but that’s one of the things I like about it….much easier and quicker to rinse you mouth at the end. ūüôā

Baking Soda as Toothpaste

A few days ago I featured a post on that great multi-purpose cooking and health aid baking soda (you can read that here) which included several do-it-yourself recipes for toothpaste. If you have heard the argument that baking soda is too abrasive for your teeth, then you should read this information from¬† It turns out baking soda is actually less abrasive than all the toothpastes on the market….

Is Baking Soda a Good Alternative Toothpaste?

(by ) Oral hygiene is an important factor to our health that we should be aware and work to maintain. For many people who are learning about more natural ways of eating, living and treating our bodies, using the typical toothpaste brands that contains fluoride quickly becomes a non-option. For me, I transitioned from toothpaste with fluoride to fluoride free toothpaste. From there I made my way to brushing with baking soda.

What’s wrong with regular toothpaste?

When it comes to regular toothpaste, there are better and safer alternatives. If you read the tube or box your toothpaste comes in, you will notice a warning stating that if you swallow the toothpaste, you should call poison control. Reason being is toothpaste contains several potentially dangerous chemicals, one of these is called fluoride. Although fluoride has been shown to potentially achieve results in re-strengthening enamel, it is also a toxic substance linked to many health problems. The reason why fluoride is not recommended is because the majority of the time it is used in toothpaste and at the dentist, too much is being applied and therefore it is doing more harm than good. With there being many much more effective and safer alternatives, using fluoride is not a healthy choice. Using too much fluoride can make the teeth too brittle and therefore more susceptible to cavities and dental fluorosis. Considering that 1 in 3 children in the US now have dental fluorosis, we are clearly using too much fluoride. Toothpastes include ingredients like polyethylene glycols, triclosan, strontium, benzene, and tin which are all potentially harmful to human health. Toothpaste contains high levels of glycerin. When there are high levels of glycerin left on our teeth, it takes quite a long time before it wears off and our enamel can properly strengthen again. This leaves teeth susceptible to cavities. Finally, toothpaste does not contain many natural ingredients. This of course is your choice as to whether or not you want to stick to products that are as natural as possible. You can read more about fluoride here.

Is baking soda a good option?

I first came across the idea of using baking soda when doing fluoride research for a short documentary I made called Fluoride: The Hard to Swallow Truth. I made the change over from fluoride-free toothpaste to baking soda and was very happy with the results. Then I began hearing about the potential of baking soda being too abrasive for teeth and gums and that it could actually wear away at the enamel. So I began to research this to find out whether this was a good option for me, especially since I was recommending it to other people as well. I found that YES, baking soda is a good option; here’s why.

Understanding abrasivity

When a toothpaste is produced it must get FDA approval before it can be sold to the public. One of the tests that is conducted before its approval is to determine its RDA value (radioactive dentin abrasion or relative dentin abrasivity). To determine the RDA value of toothpaste, the lab tester begins with an extracted human or cow tooth. The tooth is irradiated in a neutron flux, mounted in methylmethacrylate (bone glue), stripped of its enamel, inserted into a brushing-machine, and brushed by ADA standards (reference toothbrush, 150g pressure, 1500 strokes, 4-to-1 water-toothpaste slurry). The radioactivity of the rinsewater is then measured and recorded. For experimental control, the test is repeated with an ADA reference toothpaste made of calcium pryophosphate, with this measurement given a value of 100 to calibrate the relative scale. (2)

The following are the RDA levels for popular toothpastes including baking soda which was also tested.

As we observe in the chart, baking soda, when used correctly, is actually less abrasive than all toothpastes. Given the unnatural nature of toothpaste and the efficacy of baking soda when it comes to keeping teeth clean and the mouth at a good Ph level, using baking soda to brush your teeth is actually more favorable than natural toothpastes.

How to brush with baking soda

Brushing with baking soda is quite simple. First start with a fresh toothbrush that does not contain any of the left over residues from your toothpaste.
1. Take a pinch of baking soda and put it into a small glass or small bowl.
2. Add a small amount of pure water (ideally not tap water) to the bowl and mix it into the baking soda. The solution should be slightly runny as you don’t want too many of the granules present. Dip your toothbrush in to get some of the solution on the brush.
3. Brush starting with your molars and then moving to the facings and backs of your teeth.
4. (optional) Once done, you can add some more water to the glass or bowl and swish it around your mouth. This will help keep your mouth alkaline.
5. Rinse out your mouth with pure water as you normally would after brushing.

Try this out for yourself and share your thoughts on how this works for you. Remember, if you have learned that baking soda is too abrasive, it may be  misguided information or people may have been incorrectly using baking soda to brush. As always, feel it out for yourself and make adjustments accordingly.

PERSONAL NOTE: I have also heard you can add some coconut oil (read about its many benefits here) to the baking soda mix. With what I’ve learned about the oil, doing so would seem to make sense. It is anti-bacterial/anti-microbial, so would add to keeping your mouth and teeth healthy. ¬†And oil pulling with coconut oil can help whiten your teeth, heal receding gums, and more! You can read all about it here.¬†

Oil Pulling With Coconut Oil

I recently did a post on oil pulling (Oil Pulling: Can You Say “Go Swish?”) where sesame and sunflower were the main oils mentioned. But when I first tried “swishing” a number of years ago, I found I was put off by the taste and feel of those oils, so I didn’t keep up with the routine. Plus, organic sesame oil can be fairly expensive. Then I started hearing about¬†coconut oil¬†and its¬†amazing properties and thought maybe this yummy oil could be used for the pulling process, too. ¬†Well, apparently I was right, judging from this article by Dr. Mercola and others I’ve read….

<b>Oil pulling</b> is a simple, natural and cost-effective way to get rid of ...

(graphic from

Coconuts are among the most nutritionally dense foods on the planet and have been a dietary staple for millennia. Western science is now “playing catch-up” to what natives of tropical regions have known for thousands of years. One of the reasons coconut is so special is that it’s a natural antimicrobial food.

Coconut, especially its oil, is a powerful destroyer of all kinds of microbes, from viruses to bacteria to protozoa, many of which harm human health.

Researchers at the Athlone Institute of Technology’s Bioscience Research Institute in Ireland set out to test coconut oil’s biocidal properties against the bacteria responsible for tooth decay.

Dental caries is a commonly overlooked problem affecting 60 to 90 percent of children and the majority of adults in industrialized countries, according to chief researcher Dr. Damien Brady. His research team tested the antibacterial action of coconut oil in its natural state and coconut oil that had been treated with enzymes, in a process similar to digestion.

The oils were tested against strains of Streptococcus bacteria, which are common inhabitants of your mouth.

They found that enzyme-modified coconut oil strongly inhibits the growth of most strains of Streptococcus bacteria, including Streptococcus mutans, an acid-producing bacterium that is a major cause of tooth decay1. It is thought that the breaking down of the fatty coconut oil by the enzymes turns it into acids, which are toxic to certain bacteria.2 Enzyme-modified coconut oil was also harmful to the yeast Candida albicans, which can cause thrush.

Dr. Brady said:

“Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alternative to chemical additives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations. Also, with increasing antibiotic resistance, it is important that we turn our attention to new ways to combat microbial infection.”

The work also contributes to our understanding of antibacterial activity in the human gut, which helps maintain the balanced flora necessary for a strong immune system.

“Our data suggests that products of human digestion show antimicrobial activity. This could have implications for how bacteria colonize the cells lining the digestive tract and for overall¬†gut health,”¬†explained Dr. Brady.

The Many Health Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil offers an impressive array of health benefits. In addition to its antimicrobial properties, coconut oil is beneficial for:

  • Promoting heart health
  • Supporting proper thyroid function
  • Strengthening your immune system
  • Providing an excellent “fuel” for your body and supporting a strong metabolism
  • Maintaining healthy and youthful looking skin

One of the primary reasons coconut oil’s benefits are so broad is that 50 percent of the fat in coconut oil is lauric acid, which is rarely found in nature. In fact, coconut oil contains the most lauric acid of any substance on Earth. Your body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, a monoglyceride that can actually destroy lipid-coated viruses such as HIV and herpes, influenza, measles, gram-negative bacteria, and protozoa such as giardia lamblia.

Another of coconut oil’s anti-microbial components is capric acid, present in lesser amounts.

Coconut oil is also comprised of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which are smaller than the long chain fatty acids that are much more common to vegetable and seed oils. MCFAs are easily digested and readily cross cell membranes, and are sent directly to your liver, where they are immediately converted into energy rather than stored as fat. Coconut oil is easy on your digestive system and does not produce an insulin spike in your bloodstream.

The second technique I’ve been using for the past year is called “oil pulling” with coconut oil, which has reduced my plaque by another 50 percent, allowing me to go two months between visits to the hygienist, instead of one. Oil pulling is a practice dating back thousands of years, having originated with Ayurvedic medicine. When oil pulling is combined with the antimicrobial power of coconut oil, you have one very powerful health tool.

Sesame oil is traditionally recommended, but it has relatively high concentration of omega-6 oils. Therefore, I believe coconut oil is far superior, and, in my mind, it tastes better. But from a mechanical and biophysical perspective, it is likely that both work.

Oil pulling is simple. Basically, it involves rinsing your mouth with coconut oil, much like you would with a mouthwash. The oil is “worked” around your mouth by pushing, pulling, and drawing it through your teeth for a period of 15 minutes. If you are obsessive like me and want even better results you can go for 30-45 minutes. This process allows the oil to “pull out” bacteria, viruses, fungi and other debris. The best time is in the morning before eating breakfast, but it can be done at any time, the important point is to just do it. I seek to do it twice a day if my schedule allows. The used oil is discarded and your mouth rinsed with water. You should not swallow the oil because it’s loaded with bacteria, toxins, pus, and mucous.

When done correctly, oil pulling has a significant cleansing, detoxifying and healing affect, not only for your mouth and sinuses but for the rest of your body as well.

Candida and Streptococcus are common residents in your mouth, and it’s these germs and their toxic waste products that cause plaque accumulation and tooth decay, in addition to secondary infections and chronic inflammation¬†throughout¬†your body. Oil pulling can help lessen the overall toxic burden on your immune system by preventing the spread of these organisms from your mouth to the rest of your body, by way of your bloodstream.

The potential benefits of oil pulling extend well beyond your mouth. Oil pullers have reported rapid relief from systemic health problems, such as arthritis, diabetes and heart disease. According to *Bruce Fife, naturopathic physician and expert in the healing effects of coconut3, the cleansing effect of oil pulling can be understood with the following analogy:

“It acts much like the oil you put in your car engine. The oil picks up dirt and grime. When you drain the oil, it pulls out the dirt and grime with it, leaving the engine relatively clean. Consequently, the engine runs smoother and lasts longer. Likewise, when we expel harmful substances from our bodies our health is improved and we run smoother and last longer.”

*FYI, I recently came across a great little 5-page pdf by Dr. Fife¬†on oil pulling for detoxifying and healing the body. It mentions a few things I hadn’t read elsewhere and states that “Most illnesses could be totally cured by this simple method¬†and make it unnecessary to use surgery or all kinds of¬†medicines with their harmful side effects.”¬†If you would like to read Dr. Fife’s pdf, just let me know and I’ll be glad to send you a copy via e-mail. If you haven’t already jumped on the “swishing train,” the pdf should convince you to at least give it a try.¬†¬†

Also, I wanted to include the following testimonial that I found while researching oil pulling. It’s long, but it¬†gives you a good idea of what you might experience and how the process may be able to help with a wide variety of conditions/health issues. For the record, so far I have never felt nauseated or coughed up anything, as this woman has, but everybody and every body is different. How often you do the process and the length of time you swish, plus your state of health and toxicity level, will determine what your own particular experience will be. ¬†

“I am a 60 years old woman. I have been in and out of nutrition and alternative healing for more of those 30 years. Never in those 30 years found anything as amazing, as easy as oil-pulling. I started oil-pulling about a month ago. The result I have already received are truly amazing. When I started I was in the middle of scheduling my 5th back surgery in 10 years. I had developed severed foot drop. I have not had the ability to “heel-walk” for the past 18 months. I had no ankle reflex in my left leg. have had 10 years of chronic pain and am on a regime of pain killers, muscle-relaxers & anti-depressants. I am also a very active rock climber with also over 30 years of mountain (alpine) and rock climbing passion! So here are the little miracles I have already noticed within a month of oil pulling. I tell you about myself only so that you can understand the dramatic, almost unbelievable extent of the miracles that I have witnessed in the last 4 weeks of OIL PULLING. Day 1 – 3 I found it fairly nauseating at first to have the oil in my mouth. Now I eat a little of the oil as I begin – when the coconut oil (my oil of choice) is melting in my mouth.

I kept doing it because from the very first time I did it I noticed something. At first it was just a little relief of the nagging low grade jaw discomfort. Days 3 – 7 I noticed that my teeth were already a little whiter. The pocket around my tooth is smaller. My gums are a little better. My joints felt better. I have chronic knee PAIN and arthritis. I have blown ligaments in both knees. For the last 2 years I have been telling my knee doctor that I would do surgery after the NEXT appt. Just give me cortisone so I can go out and climb and bicycle and walk. Well OIL-PULLING right now out-performing cortisone. Days 7 -14. My teeth keep getting whiter. I have a porcelin crown that was matched with my tooth color. It had come out a little lighter than my regular tooth. Now at 2 week OIL PULLING my other teeth are a light as the crown. My gums are tighter.

More impressive my knees get better. For at least the last 3 years I have limped a lot after sitting down after exercise. It has been difficult to walk down a flight of stairs after an hour of non-impact aerobics. At about 10 days I coughed once and this glob of thick yellow stuff came out (sorry about the graphic description). I have never had bronchitis or pnuemonia problem. I coughed up stuff for about 10 days. I never felt sick. Over the 10 days the stuff that came out got lighter and less often over time as I continued to oil-pull. Days 14 – now. Now the miracles are really amazing. My foot and toe strength starts to return. By day 26 I can “heel-walk” Though I have had a MRI that showed a clear nerve impingement & increasingly arthritic changes in my spine, I had a EMG 4 days ago that showed my nerves were NOW ok. These changes are so well documented. NOW My knees are now great. I get up easily after exercising. I avoided surgery #5. Still have back pain that will keep me on a medication routine. But for the first time 6 months I can begin to reduce meds. The pocket around my tooth continues to close and open depending on the amount of OIL-PULLING. I don’t cough much anymore.

My lungs feel lighter. Little things in life are important: My night-guard doesn’t smell and taste a little icky anymore. I used to have to clean it all the time because it would yellow. Now it stays white, doesn’t cloud a cup of water in 14 hrs. It doesn’t smell or taste bad. Yesterday one of the two teeth that share the pocket cracked and a small piece broke off. When I flossed it out, I noticed a bad smell. In the last 24 hours I have OIL-PULLED multiple times. Today the “house-cleaning I am noticing is that the skin on my face and lips are breaking out a little.”

Wondering what brand of coconut oil to buy? Artisana makes a raw, organic, extra virgin oil that comes in glass jars, instead of plastic like most other brands. Garden of Life is another high quality brand that uses glass jars. Both of these oils seem to be some of the best around, but I use so much oil these days that I’ve also been buying Nutiva’s 54 oz. organic, extra virgin oil. You can get these brands¬†and others at¬†Vitacost¬†at a discount. And if you sign up for a free account at¬†¬†(my favorite money-saving site) before you shop and use their link to Vitacost, you earn cash back on your purchases. Yea! Even more savings!

And don’t forget to request Dr. Fife’s pdf, if you want it. And be sure to read my other posts on “swishing,” coconut oil, cleansing with coconut oil, and using the oil to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s:

Oil Pulling: Can You Say “Go Swish?”

If you had never heard of oil pulling, then you are about to be introduced to one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to detox the body and improve your health. The more I read and learn about oil pulling, the more I love this simple process that offers all sorts of benefits. Here’s an article from Be Well Buzz that will fill you in on this great self-help health tool…

(BeWellBuzz) A gift from India and brought back from the dead by a Ukrainian physician, Dr. Karach, oil pulling is nothing short of a miracle. It is so effective against various ailments that it is rightfully considered as an alternate medicinal treatment in itself. The best thing about this 5,000 year old practice is that it is neither esoteric nor expensive. Anybody and everybody can use it if they want to. To use it, you need only two things: 10 ml of sesame or sunflower oil and 15-20 minutes of time.

What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is a simple home remedy that cures various diseases ranging from common colds to acute allergic conditions, bronchitis, indigestion to stomach ulcers, and headaches to migraine. The treatment involves rinsing your mouth with 10 ml of sesame oil or sunflower oil for about 15-20 minutes.

This treatment has its roots in ancient Indian traditional medicine system Ayurveda, considered by most Eastern and Western scholars as the oldest form of health care. The avatar of oil pulling popularized by Dr. Karach is slightly different from the original one, listed in the Ayurvedic textbook Charaka Samhita.

Both forms, however, are equally effective. To avoid confusion, in the ‚Äúhow to do oil pulling‚ÄĚ section, we speak of only Dr. Karach‚Äôs method.

Sesame oil¬†is more warming and may be more gently detoxifying than other oils that are ‚Äúcolder‚ÄĚ energetically. It has a somewhat strong sesame flavor, which is a familiar food taste for most people.¬†Sunflower oil¬†has a milder taste if you prefer that.

Shared ahead are the key differences between the original oil pulling and Dr. Karach’s oil pulling. Before we see them, we must understand two things:

  • Both the original oil pulling and Dr. Karach‚Äôs version are highly effective
  • Users can choose any one of them or practice both

Ayurveda’s oil pulling Vs Dr. Karach’s oil pulling

There are two differences between the aforementioned two versions. These are:

  • Ayurveda recommends the use of¬†sesame oil, while Dr. Karach propagates sunflower oil
  • Ayurveda recommends oil pulling first thing in the morning (on empty stomach) right after brushing teeth. Dr Karach, however, advises oil pulling just before breakfast on an empty stomach

Sesame or sunflower ‚Äď which is more effective?

Both are equally effective. It is interesting to note that while these two oils have shown almost identical healing capabilities, other oils, used by various scientists at different times, did not exhibit any noteworthy healing capabilities.

What are the benefits of oil pulling?

Oil pulling is known to be useful in the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Common diseases such as cold, cough, allergies, headaches, etc
  • Skin problems such as itching, pigmentation, eczema, scars, rashes, etc
  • Respiratory problems such as bronchitis, asthma, etc
  • Headache and migraine
  • Tooth pain, gum diseases, dental caries
  • Back pain, neck pain, joint pains, and arthritis
  • Constipation¬†and other conditions arising due to some problem in digestive system
  • Blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes
  • Piles

In addition to the aforementioned conditions, which studies confirm can be treated, prevented, or controlled by oil pulling, other conditions in which oil pulling might be useful include:

  • Chronic sleepiness
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Cancer

A survey conducted by Indian daily newspaper, Andhra Jyoti, confirms the healing properties of oil pulling.

Approximately 2 ¬Ĺ years after publishing an article on oil pulling and its several benefits, Andhra Jyoti conducted a survey to understand the following:

  • The kind of health conditions the procedure cured
  • The degree of its effectiveness

1041 readers responded to the advertisement sharing their experience with oil pulling. Among the respondents, 927 (about 87%) stated that oil pulling cured one or more disease. 114 respondents (approx. 11 %) reported that oil pulling did not provide relief from the ailment(s) they were suffering from.

An analysis of the testimonies of people who found oil pulling useful revealed that it successfully cured the following diseases: allergies, cough and common cold, gum diseases, dental caries, infections in the ear, nose, mouth, eyes, and throat, tooth pain, headache, neck pain, migraine, back pain, lip cracking, allergic sneezing, and fever.

Recently people started using organic coconut oil as it tastes better. It has a cooler energy than sesame oil, so it’s good for people who tend to have a warmer constitution or condition of heat. Some people have reported that coconut oil is more strongly detoxifying, which isn’t always a good thing for some people, so it’s best to be cautious and go slowly.

How to use oil pulling

To use oil pulling, follow these steps:

  • After brushing your teeth, and while on empty stomach, take 10 ml of sunflower oil (1 tablespoon or 2 teaspoons) and put it into your mouth
  • Rinse your mouth thoroughly for about 15-20 minutes
  • Spit the oil after 15-20 minutes
  • Wash your mouth thoroughly with water
  • Drink a glass or two of water

Note: If you have had a cup of tea or coffee after brushing, wait for at least 60 mins before doing oil pulling. If you have had a breakfast, wait for at least 4 hrs before doing oil pulling.

  • Oil pulling is not recommended for children under 5 years of age
  • Use 5 ml of sunflower for children above 5 years of age
  • Do not gargle and do not swallow. More importantly, do not worry if you swallow the oil. Sunflower, or sesame oil, is edible oil. When swallowed, it is either digested or excreted naturally.
  • If the color of the solution you spit is yellow, it means that you have not rinsed the oil long enough or have used it in amounts greater than the recommended dosage. A white spit indicates that you have done the procedure correctly.

Oil pulling for alleviating bad breath:

PERSONAL NOTE: When I was first introduced to oil pulling a number of years ago, all the data mentioned using sesame oil, which was what I used, even though I didn’t like the taste or consistency (I like it in recipes, but not a big mouthful of it straight). Then when I started reading so many good things about¬†coconut oil¬†(see my numerous posts on this “miracle” health aid) and began to add it to my health routine, I had the thought that it might be a good alternative to the sesame oil. Lo and behold, not long after that I found data that supported my theory, and even this¬†Be Well Buzz article mentions it as an option.¬†

BTW, if you swallow the oil you’ve been swishing , it’s okay, as the article mentions, BUT realize you’ll also be ingesting all the bacteria and toxins the oil has accumulated or pulled from you’re system. The oil changing to white or cloudy at the end of the process is because of all the toxins; that’s why this article points out that if the oil is still yellow or clear (or whatever color it was when you started), then you didn’t swish long enough for it to absorb any toxins.

And if you want another take on oil pulling, you can go here to read what Dr. Edward Group, of Global Healing Center, has to say about the process. Much of the information is similar to the article above, but there are also a few other tidbits. And don’t forget to read my blog post on using coconut oil for pulling.

FYI, you can get organic sesame, sunflower and coconut oils at discount prices at¬†, one of my favorite on-line places. If you shop at Vitacost,¬†be sure to sign up for a free account at¬†¬†beforehand, if you don’t already have one. That way you can use the eBates portal to shop at Vitacost and earn cash back on your purchases.
