SPRING BODY CLEANSE DIET: 25 DETOX RECIPES & DRINKS

Spring cleaning doesn’t only apply to your home – it applies to your body as well. We’ve rounded up a selection of spring detox recipes to help you clean out and refresh your system so you feel revitalized and energized as the weather warms up.

When you hear “detox,” you may automatically think of juice cleanses or restrictive, super low calorie meal plans that are marketed as a weight loss cleanse. That’s not what we’re after here—we think it’s important to eat enough calories (including protein and carbohydrates) to keep your body functioning properly or your detox could do more harm than good. You can accomplish a natural cleanse while still eating delicious foods.

These recipes feature liver-and-gastrointestinal-nourishing foods with a variety of fruits, veggies and spices. So yes, you can do a body cleanse diet and still feel satisfied!

You may notice that this list doesn’t contain any smoothies. We put together an entirely separate list of green and detox smoothies for you because they are so popular.

Holiday Over-indulgence ? Try This Digestive Aid “Cocktail”

It’s hard not to overdo things a bit this time of year, and New Year’s Eve IS just around the corner. So if you find yourself in need of something to ease digestive discomfort, try this “cocktail” from Arsy Vartanian at Rubies and Radishes that includes several of my favorite self-help health items…..apple cider vinegar, ginger and lemon juice. She mentions whipping this up when her husband wasn’t feeling well after a night of drinking, eating poor quality quesadillas (maybe a step above the bell!) and ice-cream bars, so it’s not just for holiday over-indulgence. 🙂

Tips, Tip, Tips: Round Four AND Healthy Holiday Gift Ideas

Okay, here we go with round four of the Tips, Tips, Tips series where I share a variety of tips, rather than concentrating on one particular topic. Hope there’s something here everyone can make use of. And at the end of the post be sure to check out my webpage for some healthy holiday gift ideas, plus some free gifts for yourself!

# 1 – “Recycling” garlic……

Description Garlic.jpg

If you have a bulb of garlic that starts to sprout, there’s no need to toss it out. I had actually heard long ago that it would be bad to eat it, so I always cut the green out or threw the bulb in the garbage. but it turns out that sprouted garlic is actually more nutritious. Makes sense, since sprouting almost anything increases  its nutrient value and bio-availability (see Tip # 12). So you can eat the sprouted cloves for extra benefit or set the bulb in a little bit of water, and as more green shoots begin to show/grow, you can harvest and use them for a mild garlic taste in salads, omelets, etc., much as you would chives.

# 2 – A tasty sounding recipe from Webecoist for boosting your metabolism….

Fitness, Fit, Fitness Motivation, Fitness Quotes, Fitspiration, Fitness Inspiration! :)

For more on boosting your metabolism, see this post with a 7-pose yoga routine specifically designed for weight loss and metabolism: Yoga For Weight Loss & Metabolism

# 3 –  From TruthAboutAbs night time teas:

Try “night time teas” that have relaxing qualities such as chamomile tea, mint tea, lemongrass tea, or all of them mixed.  A side benefit of chamomile tea, and another reason to include it in your weekly night tea repertoire, is that it contains unique phytonutrients that can help fight estrogenic overload from all of the xenoestrogens that we are exposed to from chemicals, pesticides, etc. in today’s chemical laden world.

Also remember that you can add a spoonful of tart cherry concentrate and you’ll get a double-whammy of sleep aid!  This works well about 1-2 hours before bedtime to help your body and mind relax.

# 4 – Did you know banana peels can be “re-purposed” in a variety of ways?

Whiten your teeth by rubbing the inside of the peel back and forth across them. You can also use the inside of the peel to shine and clean your indoor plants. And peels can be added to a compost pile whole or cut in pieces and scattered around the garden….oils from the peel help deter aphids; and rose bushes apparently love the extra potassium they provide.

# 5 – Shiitake  Mushrooms

Shiitake mushrooms contain a number of health-stimulating agents, including lentinan, which has anti-tumor properties. They also have antiviral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and immune-boosting effects. But it’s important to eat ONLY organically grown mushrooms, as they absorb and concentrate whatever they grow in — good or bad. Mushrooms are known to concentrate heavy metals, and air and water pollutants, which would defeat their medicinal value.

# 6 – From the Vitacost blog, here are several uses for apple cider vinegar you may not have heard of….

5 Amazing Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar

  • Rust Remover: Before you toss those old, rusty tools, bolts, utensils, pots or pans, soak a clean cloth in apple cider vinegar and try scrubbing away the rust. To remove a large amount of rust, you may need to soak the item in apple cider vinegar overnight.
  • Facial Toner: Dilute apple cider vinegar with water (1 part ACV to 4 parts water) for a homemade facial toner that may help restore the delicate pH of your skin. Apply lightly and avoid the eyes.
  • Soap Scum Scrub: Got stubborn soap scum? Spray with apple cider vinegar to help dissolve soap scum, mildew and other bathroom or kitchen grime, then wipe with a clean towel or cloth. This remedy also works well for your dishwasher — pour 1 cup of ACV in the bottom, let it sit for a few hours and then run the (empty) dishwasher on a hot water cycle to remove soap scum and odor-causing buildup.
  • Chrome Polish: Apple cider vinegar can help clean buildup and grime on chrome pots, fixtures and even wheel spokes and hubcaps. Just dip a clean cloth in vinegar and scrub gently. For caked-on dirt, try adding a pinch of baking soda — but be careful not to scratch or damage the chrome.
  • Ant Repellent: Keep annoying ants from invading your home by spraying doors, windows, crevices and other entryways with a 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water.

# 7 – Maybe sweet potatoes should be considered a  superfood?! Here’s some info about them from Rhia Catatoldo at Medical Medium….

Sweet potatoes are an excellent anti-stress food and are known to help relax muscles, steady nerves, and balance cognitive function. They are also one of the best anti-cancer foods and can particularly help to prevent breast, colon, lung, skin, and oral cancers. Sweet potatoes are known for being easy to digest and are very good for ulcers, inflamed colons, digestive disorders, and constipation. Sweet potatoes contain compounds called phytochelatins that can bind to heavy metals such as lead, mercury, copper, and cadmium and safely remove them through the body.

# 8 – I haven’t heard of this one from Thrive Market before or tried it yet, but it sounds interesting…..

As weird as it sounds, a bit of ketchup on a dishrag will clean copper pots and pans.

# 9 – I knew coconut oil had a ton of uses, but I’ve never heard about this one for dry eyes from an article by Susan Pattern for The Alternative Daily before….

TheTopNaturalEyeLubricant_640x359

Susan writes “In order to liquify the coconut oil, I ran some hot water from the tap, and put it in a small bowl. In an even smaller bowl I added about a teaspoon of coconut oil. I placed the smaller bowl in the larger bowl until the oil liquified. Whatever you do, don’t use a microwave to melt your coconut oil. Microwaves change the molecular structure of the oil and kill the lauric acid that makes coconut oil so valuable.

Once the oil was liquified, I let it cool and used a small glass dropper to withdraw some from the bowl. I tipped my head back and put a few drops in each eye. For a couple of minutes my eyes were cloudy but they soon cleared.

I did this twice a day, morning and evening, for a week and found there was a substantial decrease in dryness. I seemed to be producing more natural tears and my eyes did not feel nearly as tired by the end of the day.”

Check out this post for more on the many uses and benefits of coconut oil.

# 10 – I don’t know if this is accurate or not, but….

I read in an article at Natural News about taking detoxing baths that you can neutralize chlorine in your bath water by adding 2 teaspoons of vitamin C, and that adding Borax is helpful for eliminating fluoride (use 1 to 3 TBS per bath).

# 11 – A really short video on why buying non-GMO is only slightly better than GMO, and why organic is almost always the way to go…..

# 12 – Almost everything I read these days talks about the benefits of eating sprouted or fermented foods.  Here’s a “wowie”statistic from Dr. Mercola…..

Fresh sprouts can be easily grown at home. A wide variety of seeds can be sprouted, which maximizes their nutritional value. For example, once sunflower seeds are sprouted, their protein, vitamin, and mineral content will typically provide you with 30 times the nutrient content of organic vegetables. (FYI, you can get Go Raw Organic Sprouted Sunflower Seeds at a great discount price at Vitacost.)

Hot Sauce And Multi-purpose Health Aid Rolled Into One!

Wow, every once in awhile I read about a new product and get very excited. This is one of those times. Just got an e-mail from David Wolfe about this new hot sauce, which should not only be amazing taste-wise, but even more fantastic as a health aid. I think it will be similar to the benefits offered by Earthie Mama’s Master Tonic….or maybe even better! Wish I had stock in this or got a commission for promoting it, because if it turns out to be as good as it sounds, then I will be telling everyone about it.

Just ordered two bottles myself because it’s 1/2 price ($9.97) right now….and seems expensive, even at that, but when you think about what we pay for certain health supplements, the cost is minimal and probably a little of the sauce goes a long way. So if you are a gourmet foodie or health nut (or both!) and like things spicy, I think this is a winner!

Introducing the most ADVANCED Superfood Elixirconcealed in a delicious, easy to consume hot sauce!

For years, we’ve slathered our food with brand after brand of commercial organic hot sauce, seeking the perfect combination of spice and flavor.

Some were too hot and some weren’t spicy enough… and not only did the organic alternatives not taste exactly right to us, they also weren’t that healthful either.

Some contained soybeans, agave sweeteners,  and even cheap peppersand those were the organic brands! The conventional brands were oftentimes nothing more thanfiltered tap water, chemically-sprayed, hybridized, GMO peppers, corn sweetenersand ordinary iodized salt.

We knew there had to be an alternative that could not only taste great on most savory foods, but also offer the benefits of of some of the most nutritional substances on the planet…

And that’s when we realized the most advanced information on hot sauces wouldn’t be found in what people are doing now, but what our ancestors have been doing for THOUSANDS of years…

Traditionally, the purpose of mixing hot peppers into a liquid wasn’t merely for culinary benefit, but to boost our immunity and inner health.

In fact, one of the most powerful, ancient tools for warding of illnesses like colds andflus is the combination of medicinal hot peppers, apple cider vinegar, garlic and some honey.

And taken together, the recipe really works! The problem is, it doesn’t taste very good.

That’s when we went into the kitchen, searching for the most PRECISE combinations of some of the world’s most ancient and advanced folk remedies that actually tasted amazing!

Spicy and complex, bold and flavorful, Longevity Hot Sauce™ compliments any meal OR can be taken daily as a solo shot for ongoing immune system support.

Longevity Hot Sauce™ is comprised of TEN incredible ingredients:

1. Superfood Cider Vinegar We all know about apple cider vinegar and it’s incredible health benefits, but do you know about Superfood Vinegar? This organic, raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized, concentrated blend of 100% organic goldenberry, papaya, apple, red banana, passion fruit, rose, and mango vinegars creates a vinegar unlike any you have ever tasted before.

This cold-pressed vinegar contains naturally-occurring strains of friendly bacteria, enzymes, and proteins. By our count, that’s adding the benefits of 6 other vinegars to the power of apple cider vinegar.

2. Organic Fermented Black Garlic Black Garlic is produced by “fermenting” and aging whole bulbs of fresh garlic in a humidity-controlled environment in temperatures of about 140 to 170 degrees F for 30 days.

What’s the black color all about? Well, it occurs naturally as the sugars are drawn out of the garlic cloves during the fermentation process. Once out of the heat, the bulbs are left to oxidize in a clean room for 45 days. This lengthy process, involving no additives or preservatives, causes the garlic cloves to turn black and develop asoft, chewy texture with flavors reminiscent of balsamic vinegar and soy sauce. Yum!

During the fermentation process, the compound allicine (which gives raw garlic its distinctive odor) is turned into the water-soluble amino acid, s-allcysteine, (which means no stinky breath for you). The added bonus? It’s absorbed more quickly by the body, is 100% bioavailable, and is a powerful antioxidant.

Another kudos for black garlic? Compared to fresh garlic, it has been found to have twice the antioxidant levels. Black garlic is also packed with high concentrations of sulfurous compounds.

3. Organic Sundried Tomato Really, who doesn’t love the sun? And these sun-dried tomatoes agree! Picked at the peak of culinary quality, they add a delicious savory tang to Longevity Hot Sauce™. Salt free, sulfite free, and gluten-free, these certified organic tomatoes have been grown without pesticides and are naturally dried in the sun to cultivate an unbelievable flavor.

High in potassium, sundried tomatoes are a great source of iron, thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin. Sundried tomatoes contain vitamin K and vitamin C, as well asvitamin A in the form of lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which function as antioxidants. They also contain calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.

4. Organic Longevity Pepper Our secret ingredient! This incredibly special type of pepper grows wild in the pristine Valley of Longevity in the Ecuadorian Andes where it thrives in volcanic mineral-rich soil in clean, high-altitude air.

This zesty decongestant is a mega source of vitamin C and vitamin A, and is a hefty source of antioxidants that also contains lutein.

 –

5. Organic Achiote Achiote is a shrub native to the tropical region of the Americas and contains small heart-shaped pods which contain the annato seed. You may not even be aware this delightful ingredient is in many of your foods, but it’s actually used in many dishes for the golden tones it lends. Achiote powder is made from grinding the seeds and is thought to have immune system supporting properties.* Achiote is high in carotenoids, which are potent antioxidants that fight the free radicals in the body and support overall health.* The spicy flavor and beautiful color of achiote add an exotic element to this hot sauce.

6. Organic Coffee Blossom Honey Longevity CoffeeBlossom Honey is organically grown in the pristine Valley of Longevity in the Ecuadorian Andes. This delicious, raw honey is derived from the same plants from which the Organic Longevity Coffee™ beans are harvested. The coffee plants are grown on volcanic mineral-rich soil, fed with pure natural spring water, and nurtured in clean, high-altitude air.

7. Organic Turmeric Extract In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric was considered a whole body cleansing herb. Turmeric contains very rich stores of antioxidants, as well as curcumin, which contributes to a healthy inflammatory response within the body.* Tumeric, in addition to providing beautiful color to any meal or food it is added to.

Longevity Hot Sauce™: Culinary Grade Taste. Medicinal-Grade Benefits.

This delicious, raw honey is derived from the same plants from which the Organic Longevity Coffee™ beans are harvested. The coffee plants are grown on volcanic mineral-rich soil, fed with pure natural spring water, and nurtured in clean, high-altitude air.

 9. Organic Dragon’s Blood No dragons were harmed in the making of this product! Sangre de grado, Spanish for “blood of the dragon,” has a long history of use for both the bark and the resin of the tree. Indigenous tribes throughout Peru and Ecuador have long used the resin and bark in traditional medicine. Dragon’s blood contains taspine and a proanthocyanidin component that have been shown to be beneficial when taken internally*.

10. Himalayan Salt Himalayan Crystal Salt is a pure, hand-mined salt that is derived from ancient sea salt deposits, and it is believed to be the purest form of salt available. Himalayan salt contains the 84 natural elements needed by the body. These salts do not have any impurities since they are mined with bare hands, and explosives are prohibited in mining to preserve the magnificence of the Himalayas.

And to end on, a tasty sounding recipe from Jennifer Bliss for a dressing that also comes with a lot of side benefits. I haven’t tried it yet, but like all the ingredients, so I’m sure it will get a thumbs up from me. And I have all the ingredients on hand, so I plan to make it today or tomorrow …..

Garlic Carrot Dressing
Print Friendly

This recipe for Carrot Garlic Dressing is a simple, flavorful, whole food, plant-based, raw vegan power-house!  Because of the garlic and carrots, it provides a healing aid for those with stomach issues. The flavor is sweet, savory, bite-y, and tangy!  One way I enjoy this dressing is with a veggie salad of mixed greens, tomatoes and peppers.

Each ingredient plays an important role and contributes to the health benefits and overall flavor, but let’s see what the garlic and carrots do specifically for stomach and gastric ulcers.
Stomach ulcers/gastric ulcers are sores/lesions that develop in the lining of the stomach and upper part of the intestines. According to the American Gastroenterological Association, roughly 4 million people have stomach ulcers, and 1 in every 10 people suffer from an ulcer at least once during their lifetime. Garlic and carrots are 2 whole foods that can help with these type of problems. Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center discovered that the antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of garlic may keep levels of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacterium in check, which contribute to the development of stomach ulcers. Carrots can do many good things for your stomach, too, including maintaining its health and preventing certain conditions and diseases.

Ingredients:

  • About 1 cup Chopped Carrots
  • At least 2 TBS Tahini
  • Juice of 1 Lime
  • 2 Cloves Garlic
  • 2 to 3 TBS Cilantro
  • Water as needed

Directions:

Put all ingredients into a high speed blender until smooth.

Source: http://news.therawfoodworld.com/carrot-garlic-dressing/

7/29/15 Update: I made this recipe earlier today….sort of just eye-balled the amounts, had to substitute lemon juice for part of the lime, used just a tad of water, and added at least a TBS of olive oil, and some salt and pepper and used it more as a dip or pate than a dressing. I liked the end product and will be making it again in the near future. I think it will be even better tomorrow after it’s had some time to meld. Very healthy! 🙂

Top 20 Posts Of 2014

I plan is to spend less time on the computer this week so I can finally get around to doing some things I never get around to otherwise. That means I probably won’t be putting together any new posts in the next few days. But if you are looking for reading material, there is a pretty hefty archive of posts to explore here now, especially if you are new to the blog. To get you started, I’ve put together a Top 20 List for 2014 (okay, I think there are actually 19, but Top 19 sounded sort of lame :-)). It’s a combination of some of the most popular posts of 2014, along with really important topics I think everyone should be in the know about. So get readin’….

Self-help Health Top 20 (19) For 2014

1. This is a good one because it contains a number of quick tips all in one post:

Master Tonic: Anti-viral, Anti-bacterial, Anti-fungal, Anti-parasitical, Anti-you-name-it!

With winter in full swing where I live and the body sometimes being a little sluggish (I seem to automatically want to go into hibernation mode when it’s cold out :-)), plus all the over-doing that can be a part of the holidays, as well as flu season being in full swing, this seems like a great time to feature this cleansing, healing tonic recipe from  Earthie Mama. I sure wish I’d had some this past week!

Picture

 Super Cleansing Anti-Everything Tonic

Ingredients and Directions:

  • 1 30 oz. bottle Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (I recommend Braggs ACV)
  • 1/4 cup chopped Garlic
  • 1/4 cup Onions
  • 2 **Habanero peppers (or hottest peppers you can find)
  • 1/4 cup grated Ginger
  • 2 TBS  of grated Horseradish
  • 2 TBS Turmeric or 2 Turmeric root chunks
  1. Blend  ingredients together for a couple of minutes
  2. Strain
  3. Pour liquid back in bottle
  4. Compost everything else!

You can store the tonic in a cupboard for long periods of time. No need to keep in the refrigerator. You can also use it mixed with olive oil for a salad dressing.  Or a shot full on you stir fry.

The most ideal way to make this tonic is to make it on the New Moon and leave it in a dark place until the Full Moon two weeks later, and then strain and bottle.

**It is a good idea to wear gloves especially when handling the peppers as it is difficult to get the heat off of your hands!

*For sore throat, gargle a bit in the mouth and swallow.
*For an illness, such as a cold or flu, take about 2 droppers full or a TBS every couple of hours.
*For daily immune support drink 2 droppers full/1 TBS every day. Build up tolerance to a shot glass full.
*Eat an orange, lemon, or lime slice after to ease the heat.

Benefits of the tonic…..

Picture

The super cleansing tonic is an antibiotic, destroying both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is also a potent anti-viral and anti-fungal/yeast formula, and will increase blood and lymph circulation to every part of the body. It is so effective that it is said to be the cure for colds and the flu, and is the herbal preparation of choice against candida. This basic formula dates back to medieval Europe and the plagues.

Benefit of each Ingredient: (All Organic Of Course!!)

  • Garlic is a broad spectrum antibiotic. Unlike chemical antibiotics that kill off millions of friendly bacteria that your body needs, Garlic only targets the invading bacteria and even promotes and increases your healthy bacteria. Garlic is also a powerful anti-fungal and literally destroys any antigen, pathogen and any harmful or disease causing micro-organism.
  • Onion is Garlic’s next of kin and has similar but milder action. Together they are a tremendous fighting duo.
  • Horseradish is a potent herb for the sinus and lungs. It opens up the sinus passages and increases the circulation there, where most doctors agree, the common cold and influenza often starts.
  • Ginger contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties and is a tremendous circulatory stimulant.
  • Hot Peppers are the most powerful circulatory propellant known. It simply sends the antibiotic and disease fighting properties of the other herbs where they’re needed most.
  • Turmeric clears infection and reduces inflammation inside of the body. It blocks cancer from developing. Especially helpful for those with joint pain.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar (I use Braggs Organic ACV)  There surely must be something really healthy in using apple cider vinegar, since The Father of Medicine, Hippocrates, used this vinegar around 400 B.C. for its health-giving qualities. It is said that he had only two remedies: honey and apple cider vinegar.

Here are some of the testimonials left by people using the tonic:

“My grandfather just finished his cancer treatment.  He had so much trouble eating and building his immune system. He started drinking your Master Tonic and even the doctors are surprised by how well he is doing.  He says he owes it all to your tonic. Thank you for all that you do and for sharing your wisdom” ~ Jeanine M.

“Your Master Tonic helped me from not getting sick when everyone around me was ill. Thank you so much for all that you do!” ~ Diane M.

“I am so grateful I found this recipe.  I have been making it at home and I have noticed a complete change in my health. I used to get sick all the time, my metabolism was slow and I felt rundown.  I have not been sick once since I started drinking the tonic and I have so much energy. Thank you, Alex. You are so inspiring!” ~ Kara M.

“I have noticed that since I have been drinking your tonic, my arthritis has been manageable. I have so much more energy and my body feels better in general.” ~ Mark G.
“This tonic is a staple in my house.  Every time I get the slightest sign of a cold, I drink a shot glass full and it feels like it goes away right then and there.  The Master Tonic is magic medicine! Thank you!” ~ Pamela P.
Don’t want to make your own? No problemo. Earthie Mama’s site offers it already made for $15 a bottle. The website is also a great resource for health information, recipes and more.

Gargle Your Sore Throat Away!

In my previous post I featured a recipe for sore throat tea. Well, thanks to The Remedist, here are a number of gargle recipes to use instead, or in addition to the tea for added support. Some of the remedies can also provide relief for swollen nasal passages, sore gums, phlegm and more….

Salt and water

This is probably the gargle most of us are familiar with. I know it was what I grew up using. Try grandma’s sore throat remedy by mixing 1/4 teaspoon salt in 1 cup warm water. (Use the hottest water you can comfortably tolerate. Cold gargles are ineffective.)

The briny solution helps rinse away and neutralize acids in the throat, relieving the burning sensation and promoting fast healing of irritated mucous membranes.

Note: Mix a fresh batch of gargle for every use. Better to waste a bit pouring it out than to leave it in your glass, where it might become contaminated with bacteria. Also, do not swallow the gargle; spit it out.

Personal Note: I highly recommend using Himalayan crystal salt and structured water for this recipe and any of the others calling for water and/or salt.

Clove tea

Add 1 to 3 teaspoons of powdered or ground cloves to water, then mix and gargle. Cloves have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe and heal a sore throat.

Tomato juice

For temporary relief of sore throat symptoms, gargle with a mixture of 1/2 cup tomato juice and 1/2 cup hot water, plus about 10 drops hot pepper sauce. The antioxidant properties of lycopene may help remedy a sore throat faster.

Green tea

Green tea is known to naturally fight infections. Next time you brew a cup, make a little extra and gargle with some of this remedy to kill any bacteria your sore throat may be harboring.

Apple cider vinegar and salt

If your throat is left raw by a bad cough, grab a bottle of apple cider vinegar because germs can’t survive in the acidic coating it’ll form on your throat. Gargle with 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon salt dissolved in a glass of warm water; use several times a day, if needed.

For a gentler treatment, combine 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar and 1/4 cup *honey and take 1 tablespoon every four hours.

*Personal Note: Use manuka honey, if possible; it has enhanced healing properties.

Goldenseal and water

Gargling with the herbal germ-killer goldenseal (1 1/2 teaspoons goldenseal tincture in 8 ounces water) kills viruses and bacteria as it soothes inflamed throat tissue.

Echinacea and water

Echinacea is an herbal virus-killer. Add 2 teaspoons tincture of echinacea to 1 cup water and gargle this home remedy three times daily.

In addition to easing sore throat pain, an echinacea gargle will give your immune system the boost it needs to fight the infection.

Myrrh and water

You may be able to speed the healing process with myrrh (a few drops of tincture of myrrh in a cup of water).

Highly astringent, myrrh is superb at combating inflammation. It’s an antiseptic too. Gargle six times a day—a bit of an effort, true, but well worth it.

Licorice water

Licorice root can soothe a sore throat and eliminate cough-inducing phlegm; a 2009 study found that post-operative patients who gargled with a licorice solution were less likely to develop a sore throat post-surgery.

Mix one teaspoon of licorice syrup or powder with eight ounces of water and swish.

Raspberry tea

Raspberry tea is an old home remedy believed to treat everything from the flu to open wounds. One recipe calls for pouring 1 cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of dried tea leaves. Steep for 10 min., then gargle.

Turmeric and water

This yellow spice is a powerful antioxidant, and scientists think it has the strength to fight many serious diseases. For a sore throat remedy, mix 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric and 1/2 teaspoon of salt into 1 cup of hot water, then strain and let cool a bit. Gargle while warm.

Sage and water

Sage can soothe a sore throat and ease painful or swollen nasal passages. One traditional home remedy calls for 1 teaspoon sage, 1/2 teaspoon alum, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 3/8 cup vinegar, and 1/8 cup water.

Hot sauce and water

The capsicum in hot peppers helps alleviate pain and fights inflammation. Add five shakes of ground cayenne pepper (or a few shakes of hot sauce) to a cup of hot water for sore throat relief.

It’ll burn, but try this gargle every 15 minutes and see if it helps.

Ginger, honey, and lemon in water

This home remedy mixes 1 teaspoon each of powdered ginger and honey, 1/2 cup of hot water, and the juice of 1/2 squeezed lemon.

Pour the water over the ginger, then add the lemon juice and honey, and gargle. Honey coats the throat and also has mild antibacterial properties.

Lemon and water

Mix 1 teaspoon lemon juice in 1 cup water for this home remedy for sore throats; the astringent juice will help shrink swollen throat tissue and create a hostile (acidic) environment for viruses and bacteria.

Wheatgrass juice

Another good remedy: Wheatgrass juice. A quick rinse and spit with this chlorophyll-rich liquid helps prohibit bacteria growth and ease throat pain.

Held in the mouth for five minutes or so, wheatgrass juice is said to help revitalize weakened gums and stop toothache pain.

It wasn’t listed as one of the remedies, but I would also consider gargling/swishing a capful of colloidal silver around in the mouth and then swallowing, and repeating this several times for a day or two. It’s also good for head/throat/sinus stuff when sprayed up the nose. And usually when I use a neti pot, the saline solution not only helps my sinuses, but also eases a sore throat. I would also recommend trying oil pulling.

More Healthy Gift Ideas, A Gift For You, and Sore Throat “Tea”

A couple of weeks ago I did a post on healthy holiday gift ideas that included Vibes Up because I love their products and they were having a 53% off sale on most items. Well, that special has ended, but those elves over there are up to it again with some amazing prices in the jewelry department that I wanted you to know about, along with a couple of other healthy gift suggestions. Plus, there’s a sore throat “tea” recipe at the end of this post that you may want to make and have on hand during the winter and beyond…..

1 # – Vibes Up is having a great sale on a lot of their jewelry, especially the sterling silver All-In-One items. No coupon code is needed; sale prices are already shown. Remember, the VU jewelry is about much more that “body adornment.” These pieces provide EMF/radiation protection, as well as grounding, balancing and energizing energies (vibes :-)). FYI, I just heard that after the first day of this jewelry special they are already sold out of some items, so act quickly if you’re interested.

# 2 – BerryBreeze™ is something I think no home should be without! I even think the government should provide a rebate or something for everyone who buys a unit because it does so much for our health (and food budget!) and the health of the planet. It more than pays for itself in the first couple of months. I love my little unit….looks like a mini R2D2 without arms and legs, and I’ve even been known to pull it from the fridge and use it to banish strong odors in the dining area and kitchen garbage area. Multi-purpose, indeed!

# 3 – Structured Water Units are another thing I think every home should have. All you need to do is read the previous posts I’ve done on these “handy dandy devices” to know I’m hooked, basically because they are multi-purpose and provide so many benefits. They are an investment, for sure, but, like the BerryBreeze™, more than pay for themselves in a short period of time.

# 4 – Salt lamps are a great gift because they look so attractive, plus also have so many health benefits. And you can never have too many! It would be good to have one in every room of the house, so you can’t go wrong giving one as a gift. And right now The Himalayan Salt Shop package deals are on sale, so you save even more than you normally would. A good way to get a lamp and/or candle holders for you and someone you love!

# 5 – Raw Food World is a great place to shop for gourmet, exotic or hard-to-find super healthy foods, snacks and other items. I have mentioned this site before in several posts, including the one on Dragon’s Blood. They offer some of the highest quality and healthiest items on the planet.

# 6 – The Five Rituals program would make a great gift for anyone wanting to incorporate The 5 Tibetans into their new year exercise routine. This series of 5 yoga-based poses/exercises is easy to learn, quick to do, and requires no special equipment, but offers major benefits to the body and spine. Self Development is having a sale on the program right now and it comes with some extra bonuses and a money back guarantee.

# 7 – Groupon has become one of my favorite places for great deals on all sorts of massage, chiropractic, skin care, gym/fitness packages and more. Many of the offers are set-up to where you can buy a coupon to use for yourself and one to give as a gift. Can you say double good deal?! AND Groupon has been offering up to 20% extra savings a couple of times lately when you purchase an already discounted local service or product. PLUS, Groupon is one of the stores in the eBates.com portal, so if you have a free account there you can even earn cash back on Groupon purchases. How does it get any merrier than that??! I bought a coupon the other day from a healthy food delivery service that was worth $160 for $79, then got 20% off that, plus earned 6% cash back!

And here’s a little gift for you. Jim Oliver is offering a free MP3 download of a piece of music he just created. Very soothing to listen to, but it’s not just music. Jim creates sound/music that incorporates actual healing frequencies; you can learn more about what he does here. This piece is ideal for de-stressing and maintaining balance. Loop it and enjoy in the background as you work on holiday projects…. or on a blog post, as I’ve been doing just now. 🙂

And now for a recipe to make and keep on hand as a remedy for sore throats and chest colds…..

Winter Sore Throat Tea from Julie Taylor with Barbara Metts; a good way to get off antibiotics and start using natural medicines. Make sure you have some of this ready and on hand for sore throats and chest colds….makes about 2 cups

1. Two lemons thoroughly cleaned and sliced
2. Two piece of ginger about the size of your pointer and middle finger together sliced into coin size pieces
3. Honey (about 1 cup or your preferences)
(You can also add ground cinnamon – about a teaspoon)

In a 12-16 oz. jar, combine lemon slices and sliced ginger. Pour honey (organic is best) over it slowly. It may take a little time to let the honey sink down and around the lemon and ginger slices. Make sure when the honey has filled in all the voids that there is enough to cover the top of the lemon slices. Close jar and put it in the fridge, it will form into a “jelly.” To serve, spoon jelly into a mug and pour boiling water over it.

PERSONAL NOTE: Manuka honey would be best, if you have it. And I highly recommend using organic lemons, ginger, and cinnamon, and structured water when you make the “tea.”

Makes about 2 cups

Stores in fridge 2-3 months.

TIPS, TIPS AND MORE TIPS

Thought for a change I would create a post with a number of self-help health tips, instead of concentrating on one specific topic……

# 1 – Your thymus is located in the center top of your chest, below your collar bone. When you tap on it, it triggers the production of T-cells, boosts energy, relieves stress, and increases strength and vitality. For an instant energy boost, tap your thymus with your fingertips for 20 seconds, while slowly and deeply breathing in and out and you will enjoy a natural energy surge.

# 2 – Whether you hug a tree or just sit under one, your health and energy will get a boost….

image from worldofstock com of special interest to readers of this ...

 (from TreeHugger.com)

# 3 – Always include some kind of fat or oil when eating or drinking something high in Vitamin A. A is fat-soluble, which means it needs some form of fat to be readily absorbed by the body. Whenever I’m drinking fresh veggie juice I always try to remember to eat a spoonful of coconut oil at the beginning. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, too, so the same thing applies.

# 4 – Use salt lamps to add negative ions to your environment, lift your mood, off-set EMFs, plus purify and dehumidify the air. They also amplify the natural frequency of 8 to 10 cycles per second in the human brain, which is the normal resonance synchronized with the resonant frequency of the planet’s electro-magnetic field (7.83 Hz or cycle per second) and stabilize alpha wave rhythms in our brain.

Numerous health benefits are gained from Himalayan Salt Lamps: they enhance the immune system, reducing susceptibility to colds and flu. Having them in your vicinity helps clear the sinuses, eases up migraines, headaches, allergies and hay fever. They improve lung capacity preventing respiratory-related illnesses and soothe asthma attacks. They increase alertness and productivity as well as concentration, healing fatigue and depression syndromes.

# 5 – Have you tried kombucha? I’ve become a big fan of this tangy, fizzy fermented beverage. There are so many brands and flavors available these days, some with chia seeds added, which bumps up the nutritional value and health benefits even more. One of my go-to snacks is organic popcorn, popped in coconut oil , then drizzled with organic butter and  sprinkled with Himalayan crystal salt, …all washed down with a Reed’s Gogi-Ginger Kombucha. Yum!

# 6 – This is along the same lines as # 3. Being out in Nature….whether sitting under a tree or walking barefoot…is good medicine. But if the weather’s cold or barefooting doesn’t sound like such a great idea for some reason, you can always use Vibes Up products to provide grounding energies/negative ions to your body.

# 7 – Astaxathin is not only good for your skin when taken internally, but can also be used externally. Just empty the contents of a gelcap into your moisturizer or face cream…its yellow color will also add a slight tint or “healthy glow” to your skin.

# 8 – You can also add Vitamin C to your personal care products. Good for your skin and helps add some protection from sunburn.

# 9 – Diatomaceous earth makes a great polish for removing stains from your teeth. Just sprinkle on a dry or slightly wet toothbrush and start brushing. Don’t let it all get too wet because you want to maintain the grittiness of the mixture. It may take a little elbow grease and adding more D. E., but it does a pretty amazing  job. Makes me think dental hygienists should use it for polishing/cleaning teeth, since it’s all-natural, basically tasteless, 85% silica (which is good for bone health), and actually good for you if swallowed.

# 10 – Make your own almond/nut milk…..

 -

Soak 1 cup nuts for at least 4-8 hours (to help get rid of phytic acid); rinse once soaked. Add nuts to blender with 3 cups of water and blend until creamy and white. Add more water, if needed/desired. If you want to sweeten, add in raw honey or a couple of dates. Cinnamon, vanilla optional for extra flavor. Pour mixture through your nut milk bag, into a jar to store for 4-5 days in the refrigerator.

PERSONAL NOTE: Be sure to use structured water, which will add to the benefits of your nut milk. And don’t waste/throw out the almond “debris” you strain from the liquid; this nutritious mix can be used as a base/flour for making wheat-free cookies and many other things.

# 11 – Broccoli and cabbage contain a very special molecule called sulforaphaneResearch shows that sulforaphane increases the expression of the VDR gene, which helps with absorbing vitamin DIn other words, the sulforaphane that we find in cruciferous vegetables and herbs like wasabi helps the body absorb more vitamin D—improving bone mass, as well as the ability to fight infection, cancer, and inflammation.

# 12 – Just a few of the many health issues coconut oil can be used for….

mercola3

# 13 – And coconut oil has a number of around-the-house uses, too!

mercola4

(these 2 charts on coconut oil are thanks to Dr. Mercola’s site mercola.com)
